Along with the first phase completion of the Village Plaza, Tamarack is improving mountain terrain and opening up lift-served access to more than 200 acres. “It will certainly be busy around the mountain this spring,” Tamarack Resort President Jon Reveal said. “Not only is the first phase of the Village Plaza, with retail, lodging and restaurants being completed, but the mountain is getting a generous addition of accessible terrain thanks to new mountain equipment, including a high-speed quad. We’re focused on improving the guest experience from the moment they arrive at the Village through their last run of the day.” Construction crews will focus on completing the exteriors of the three Phase 1 Village buildings. The construction process has been on hold since 2009. They will simultaneously finish the first phase of retail, dining and guest service spaces in time for the 2019/2020 winter season. This summer, Tamarack will install a high-speed, detachable, 4-person chairlift to service the Wildwood trails, which haven’t been skiable by lift since 2009. This lift will provide access to the resort’s most consistently pitched intermediate and expert trails along with gladed tree skiing. Along with the new ski lift, Tamarack will expand its grooming fleet with the addition of two vehicles. A new groomer equipped with a winch has the ability to groom Tamarack’s summit cornice and other steep terrain. Offering guests more skiable terrain is a high priority. Tamarack’s summer maintenance team will be clearing brush and removing undergrowth to reduce fire danger. This will provide a more skiable snow surface for skiers and boarders next winter. All of these improvements have the entire Tam Fam excited for next year’s ski season. As the start of the 2019/20 season pass sale begins, potential passholders are encouraged to take advantage of the best pass deal Tamarack has to offer from February 18 - March 4. First round pass pricing is below: • Adult season pass (30-60): $319 • 20-Something (18-29): $219 • Teen (12-17): $199 • Junior (7-11): $109 • Senior (70+): $199 • Child (6 and under): $5 • College: $119 • Military: $279 Ticket can be purchased at the Tamarack Resort ticket office or online at https://tamarackidaho.com/tickets-passes. Once a season pass is purchased, individuals ski the remainder of the 2019 ski season for free. Tamarack Resort is a four-season resort located in Donnelly, Idaho, 90 miles north of Boise. Tamarack has Southwest Idaho’s largest snowmaking system, which makes the snow conditions more reliable, even when Mother Nature doesn’t deliver. The American West cannot be understood without broadening analysis outside of the territorial space of the West. Incorporation of global events and transnational themes add to understanding of the American West as portrayed through one of its key identities—the ski industry. In 1936, Averell Harriman, chair of the Union Pacific Railroad, created America‟s first destination ski resort at Sun Valley, Idaho. Looking to Europe for inspiration, he imported European ideas and ski instructors to capitalize on the mountains of the American West, fostering a transnational industry. Ski mountains throughout the West built off of Sun Valley‟s success and modeled themselves after this first resort. This thesis explores the development of Sun Valley while also examining tensions which exist between transnational and national ambitions throughout history. Topics examined in this thesis are the development of Sun Valley and the ski industry, national concerns over the believed Nazi sympathies of Austrian ski instructors, the relationship of Hollywood with destination resorts, the Tenth Mountain Division, and changes in consumerism following World War II.
