13 14 Football Funnies: Euro 2016 POOR PENALTIES, PALATABLE PIES AND PATHETIC PUNDITRY

George Balmont reviews the wackiest moments from the Euro 2016 tournament in France… Sacré bleu! Worst Punditry In all large football tournaments, broadcasters I don’t know a lot “He’s sent him for line up their very best about punditry… a pie there!” pundits to share their expert But I know a lot opinions on the events that unfold. This year, the BBC about pie! have been sharing the opinions of Rio Ferdinand. The ex - England and Manchester United centre back came out with the expression: “He’s sent him for a pie there”. What does this mean? Has he asked the defender to purchase a pie? Has he made the defender in such a position that he looks like a pie? Was Rio about to make the most intelligent comment about football ever captured on camera then got confused and started talking about his dinner the previous night? We may never know.

Worst Penalty We saw a good few penalty shootouts this tournament, and Zaza finds Row Z in perhaps one of the most terrible shootouts in football history we witnessed an … interesting…run-up technique from Italy’s Zaza. This expert display of footwork was worthy of Strictly and was also considered for best dancing of the tournament, but this went to Pogba for his somewhat deflated dab against Iceland. Italian striker Zaza, who recently joined West Ham on loan, will surely need to up his game if he is to dethrone current Hammers penalty taker, Mark Noble.

Worst Kit Provider Puma’s Swiss Kit resembles Swiss Cheese… Lots of Holes! This award has been split by two things happening in the same match. In the game that saw Pogba’s stunt, Switzerland’s kit providers Puma had a lot to answer for. Although the game was a relaxed 0-0, where both teams had already guaranteed 1st and 2nd in their group, the Swiss kits couldn’t quite handle the stress of the occasion. Multiple shirts were ripped during the match, with Xhaka using a total of three shirts over the course of the game. Embolo and Dzemaili also suffered from such wardrobe malfunctions. Also in that game, the result of a crunching 50/50 tackle was not a player rolling around the floor crying, but a fully punctured ball. This has since aroused suspicion that the French team are slowly turning into werewolves.

Best (or Worst!) “I Hope Nobody Saw That” Moment

Joachim Louw’s Scratch and Sniff Moment Caught on Camera!

Germany were stopped by proud hosts France in the semis this year, and memories of this underwhelming tournament for the World Champions include Manager Joachim Low shoving his hand down his trousers on the touchline while being filmed on live television. Only to make things worse, he proceeded to sit down and see what it smelled like. Although he has apologised for this, it won’t be leaving our memories anytime soon. Scratch and sniff anyone?

Best After-Match Celebrations Crowd Surfing Keith! With the expanded amount of teams in the tournament, many teams who you would not expect to see in a major tournament were coming out in force. One of these was Northern Ireland, who were so happy to be at the tournament that they were willing to celebrate everything good coming their way. We saw this when footage was released of ex-player Keith Gilespie crowd- surfing with fans. This shows not only that footballers are people too, but perfectly demonstrates the power football can have to bring people together.
