A Cháirde,

We extend our sympathies to all families and clubs, who suffered bereavements during the year. We especially think of our two club Presidents whom we sadly lost last summer – Paul O’Shaughnessy RIP and Paddy Kavanagh RIP. Events such as these put sport into perspective and affords us the opportunity to take stock of our priorities and values.

Intermediate Hurling League 19.03.18 Kinvara 1-9 1-12 Rahoon – Newcastle 25.03.18 Meelick - Eyrecourt 3-16 0-10 Kinvara 06.07.18 Kinvara … … Pádraig Pearses (ROS) 20.07.18 Kinvara 2-8 3-15 Sylane 22.07.18 Carnmore 0-21 0-11 Kinvara 14.08.18 Kinvara 0-14 0-15 An Spidéal

First game of the year was a home league opener loss to Rahoon Newcastle. 20 lads togged with 12 being 21 or younger. David Huban also togged out in his 22nd year with Kinvara’s first team. None of the 12 players referred to were born when he made his Senior debut for Kinvara in 1996.

The league despite the losses was used as a training and development exercise especially for younger players being introduced into the panel.

Intermediate Hurling Championship Quarter Final 13.10.18 at Kenny Park Kinvara 0-18 0-18 Rahoon Newcastle 20.10.18 at Kenny Park (Replay) Kinvara 0-16 1-15 Rahoon Newcastle

In the championship Kinvara started their fourth year down in the intermediate ranks.

Round 1 v Kilconieron This ended all square after a tense and exciting match. Kinvara began this game with six lads who had not started in our last intermediate championship games last year. Three lads also made their debuts namely Luke Connors, Kealin O’Rouke and Sean Linnane. Also great to see Kinvara’s sporting their new jerseys and many thanks to Michael Burke in the Pier Head for sponsoring.

Round 2 v Kiltormer This exciting game ebbed and flowed, the game looked like gone from us three times in the second half, but each time we had the belief and spirit to fight back. We were a point down heading to full time but Kinvara pipped Kiltormer with a late salvo of points after a pulsating encounter. Three points from four as we headed for a four month break.

Round 3 v Castlegar The club scene resumed for Kinvara following a four month break of following the County team. An impressive four point win against Castlegar.

Round 4 v Annaghdown We were without the services of long serving David Huban who had suffered a bad ankle injury after an accident at home. This was a good win with an impressive tally of five goals.

Round 5 v Kilbeacanty Although through to the quarter finals, Kinvara showed no complacency and kept their unbeaten run going to finish as high as possible in the group table. Although Kilbeacanty looked better for much of the match, Kinvara kept in touch by hitting goals at crucial times and eventually took the lead with ten minutes left.

Round 6 - Killimor Although both sides were qualified, there was still much to play for to decide the final standings. It was Kilimor who took this encounter more seriously striving to beat us by seven plus points to avoid meeting their old adversaries Meelick–Eyrecourt in the draw from the other group.

Intermediate Hurling Championship Quarter Final

This was the third year in a row to be paired against Rahoon Newcastle at quarter final stage. This game ended all square after extra time in a game where either team could have snatched victory. Although we lost the replay, huge effort and commitment was shown by all players as they battled to the final whistle. We missed two goal opportunities, they took their only one and with a bit more luck we could have won. Kinvara started this match without nine players available to us that played Intermediate hurling for our club either this year or last. All lost through either injury, work commitments, emmigration or retirement.

But it should be noted that five young lads made their championship debut this year (adding Tom Fordham and Simon Whelan to the previously mentioned three). Goalie Mike Smith also made his debut! All U17 lads trained with the panel this year to gain experience.

Our Intermediates also fielded in the Paddy Kelly Cup this year against a very strong Feakle side from Clare. Although we lost that match, we thank the manager and squad for ensuring that this long serving club cup was played for.

The club hurler makes lots of sacrifices during the year including work and family, has to maintain fitness for a four month period in the middle of summer and we as a club appreciate this. We thank team manager Michael Helebert and his backroom team of Paddy Barry, Francis Comyn, Eamonn Keely, Barry O’Driscoll with Kevin Molloy from Kilnadeema on board as trainer.

Preleminary Quarter Final Kinvara Conc. 0-0 Portumna

Nobody volunteered to manage this team so a temporary management team of club officers Garret Byrne and Derek Smith stepped in. Very poor uptake and response from players. This grade needs to be resurrected next year especially with 10/12 lads arriving from the Juvenile club. Thanks to Garret Byrne and Derek Smith for their efforts during difficult circumstances.

Championship Play Off 09.09.18 at Loughrea Kinvara 1-3 1-11 Mullagh

The first game of the year saw Kilbeacanty travel down for a challenge game with Tommy Hanlon as referee on the 28th of April. In the championship after opening Round 1 loss at home to Rahoon Newcastle, there followed an away win against Tuam and a home win against Annaghdown. Round 4 was a narrow one point loss away to Mullagh. Round 5 was a home loss to St. Thomas followed by a Round 6 away draw to Gort. Round 7 was a a home win against Craughwell. This was a great championship with only one point separating six teams in the group. This resulted in a play off against Mullagh for the last quarter final spot. The season came to an end with a loss to Mullagh in Loughrea on Sunday 9th September. Kinvara were missing several players for several reasons but full credit to the lads that togged out and put on a determined and committed display. This group was most competitive with only one point separating six teams from second to seventh place. A good achievement to get to the playoffs having narrowly lost the first game of the year to eventual winners Rahoon Newcastle.

The highlight of their year must have been the winning of the annual Tony Moylan Cruinniu Cup. This was played on the Sunday of the Cruinniu in a highly entertaining and dramatic match with Craughwell. Club Officer Maire O’Keeffee presented the cup to joint captains Ger Linnane (Roo) and Tommie Kavanagh. Huge thanks to Manager Liam Kavanagh without whom there would be no Junor C team this year. Liam was assisted by the tireless Tommy Hanlon who finds great eneregy despite illness and the evergreen Aidan Fahy, selector and player of nearly every position on the team.

U21 Hurling

B1 Championship 11.03.18 at Kinvara Kinvara 0-18 6-8 Salthill-Knocknacarra 03.11.18 at Ahascragh Kinvara Conc. 0-0 Ahascragh-Fohenagh

The opener was played in Kinvara on the 11th of March. This was a defeat to Salthill- Knocknacarra and although Kinvara registered a huge tally of points, goals conceded were decisive. By the time the second game was fixed eight months later, interest was lost and Kinvara failed to gather numbers to field a team. Most of this panel were 17 year olds. This competition is poor, badly structured, and unfair to players. An eight month break is very unfair to all concerned. Other difficulty are that a lot of lads have weekend college/school jobs and this makes coordinating extra difficult. The club appreciates the efforts of team manager Eamonn Keely and his backroom team.

A young team this year with only two lads off the age playing. After that the squad comprised of lads down as far as U15. Round 1 was a local derby away to our neighbours and despite a high score goals conceded made the difference. All through the game Kinvara kept coming back but unfortunately ran out of time after the last goal. Round 2 saw a great performance and a comprehensive win at home against Portumna. Round 3 was an understandable loss away to a classy Cappataggle side who should really be playing at a higher grade. Round 4 and 5 followed with losses to Sarsfields and Ahascragh – Fohenagh. Round 6 against Kilimor was a must win for both sides. There followed a one point loss in a close tough competive game. There was nothing between the two sides all through with the visitors just getting the upper hand at the end. All players bar two were U17, with the seventeen year olds training with the adult team all year. Thanks to team manager Francis Comyn and his selectors Anthony Byrne, Eamonn Keely, Michael Helebert and Paddy Barry.

Minor C Football Final 18.11.18 at Oughterard Kinvara 3-7 3-8 An Fhairche - Clonbur

After a break of thirty years, KGAA again this year fielded a minor football team. As a result of strong work done at underage level in the past decade, the decision after much debate (executive) to field a minor team was still no small one.

They competed in the west board B2 Football league. This is a simple round robin format with a top two sides competing in the West B Final.

The first league game in An Spideal ended all square and with a little more composure we could have secured a win. However, nothing wrong with coming away from Connemara with a draw. In the second game at home v Ml Breathnach, we led at the interval, were four down towards the end, crept back with three points and just came short by a single point.

The third league game was a west board B 2 league semi final in Clonbur. It was not easy to travel to this football heartland to seek a result. We had to play against many of the elements there. We didn’t get any of the breaks but we must admire the commitment showen by all.

In the championship there were three qualifying games. In the first against Ml Breathnach we were 2-8 to 2-2 in arrears at the interval but a superb second half display saw us come from behind for a massive win. They had beaten us at home earlier in the summer. The second was a good hard earned win over the visitors from An Fhairche-Clonbur. With the first half wind, Kinvara led 1-5 to 0-4 at the interval. We extended that lead after the break but credit to our opponents who battled back with three well taken goals. Kinvara held firm and came up the field to score a late point and seal the win.

Two wins from two. We were now guaranteed our place in the final with one game to spare over An Spideal. For that match we were missing several players and although we were well beaten, we still had our final booked. We travelled to Oughterard for the Minor C Football final. This game had everything / goals, points, near misses…. From two fully committed teams who gave it their all. Although five points in arrears at half time. Kinvara changed tactic in the second half and ran the game to their opponents, their power play producing three second half goals. Clonbur won deep into injury time with a pointed free.

This was Kinvara’s first Minor Football Final. Many thanks to all the players from Kinvara, Ballinderren and Ardrahan and their parents.

Compliments to team manager Tommy Ivers, coach John Conole, selector Tommy O’Malley and mentor Victor Condon.

Media, Communication and Social Inclusion

 I would like to commend Garret Byrne and Mary Cullen Ward for maintaining a very active and popular G.A.A. Facebook and web page. Our facebook has now grown to 2,650 followers.  I thank Garret for his contribution of articles and photos to the local press, mainly the Connacht Tribune.  I would like to commend Máire O’Keefe for managing an active Twitter page. Our twitter account has grown a lot in past 12 months and we now have 660 followers.  I commend our Juvenile Club for participating in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.  Our Health and Wellbeing Officer (formerly known as Alcohol and Substance Abuse officers) last year was Caroline O’Shaughnessy with committee members Máire O’Keefe, Francis Comyn, Mary Cullen Ward, Garret Byrne, Derek Smith and Mick O’Hara. This committee facilitated the setting up of the Mens Shed at our grounds, and the moving of our defibrillator (and outer shell) to an external position. This committee covers all club initiatives and issues on mental health, child protection and general wellbeing. Caroline has attended Safe Talk Training and Mary attended child welfare meetings at County level. Caroline was also involved in the organising and facilitating of CPR/DEFIB training in our club house in conjunction with the Kinvara Community Defibrillator group.  Defibrillator reinstalled outside thanks to Chris Philips.  Kinvara GAA assisted with the stewarding at the Darkness into Light event last May.  As part of the social inclusion initiative promoted by the GAA the club have over the past number of years organised various social outings. There was no such outing this year due to poor uptake as a minimum number is required to make it financially feasible. It is mostly the same people who go each year and we seem to have exhausted all the attractive sites in Dublin. We will review some alternatives in the coming year.  Members of our club participated in live local radio broadcasts pertaining to GAA matters during the year. During the year we also agreed to facilitate the local Kinvara Community Radio for a place to install their mast and ancillary equipment at the back of our shed. This is another way that our club benefits another voluntary group in our community.  The local Mens Shed set up two years ago and struggled to find a suitable space to base themselves. Kinvara GAA obliged with such a space behind our clubhouse. This is a positive step by our club and one worked closely by our Health and Wellbeing Committee endorsed by our executive and is to be reviewed periodically. The key personnel in Kinvara Mens Shed we dealt with were Christian Coady, Paddy Neylon and John Kelly. Kinvara GAA would like to acknowledge the volunteerism and drive of these lads and their desire to make Kinvara a better place to live in for all the people of our community.  Again this year’s Cruinniu na mBad was organised to be more inclusive of community groups much like a Village Fete. Our allocated pitch opposite The Pier Head was ideal for our horse shoe throwing, and also gave us an opportunity to sell our AI Final Raffle tickets and promote our club and its role in the community. Huge potential here to develop and enhance our involvement in coming years.  This year’s Dr. McCarthy Cup was most special and historic as we welcomed for the first time two grandchildren of Dr. McCarthy. Frank Burke and Joanne Gibson together with their spouses were guests of honour at the match and were the first descendants of Dr. McCarthy to see the Cup being played in its 55 year history. The Cup dates back to 1963 and is one of the oldest, original and still active cups in the entire GAA. The original presentation photograph was replicated earlier in the evening, including local descendants from the original photo. After the match we spent a really special evening in the Pier Head with our visitors and their spouses Karen and Chuck. John Conneely joined us on an historical basis, and the whole occasion was recorded for Kinvara Community Radio thanks to Ailish and Barry Kavanagh. As it happened the match was a draw (first time ever). We thank the 26 lads who played, their coaches, referee Tommy Hanlon and Paul O’Donoghue for his co-operation and assistance.  Participating in the GAA Scor na nOg, referenced elsewhere, is part of making our club more community inclusive. These events strive to cover all aspects of Irish culture. We thank our Scor Officer Maire O’Keeffe for her role in this.  During the year our Executive also agreed to make our grounds a Smoke Free Zone. This initiative was originated by club minor hurler Dean Ivers, as part of An Taisce Presidents Awards he was doing. We will be launching this positive and healthy initiative ahead of the new season. We thank Dean for his contribution on this project.  This year Kinvara entered the BOI Enterprise Town Awards. The theme was to focus on the interaction between Business/Enterprise/Education/Community groups that would confirm that Kinvara is a great place to live in, work in and visit. Kinvara GAA was part of this, and to this end we met the judges at 3:45pm on the given day (26th Sept) to show our contribution as a community group. Having met the judges at the pitch we gave them a tour of the facilities, highlighting our facilitation of Kinvara Mens Shed, Club Defibrillator and the mast and electrical equipment that enables Kinvara Community Radio to broadcast. We employ 1-2 Fas workers and more at times of special projects.

Fundraising Events.

 The work of our Finance Committee, chaired by Joe Byrne, was the off-field success story of the year and all committee members are to be commended .  Our Finance committee was a key club structure this year and the club acknowledges the co-operation of both Camogie and Juvenile clubs. This committee have met almost every fortnight throughout 2018. This coming year’s finance committee will have members of both clubs on board and will work further on developing our lotto. Joe Byrne and Paddy Barry have met with both clubs with good joined up thinking on how to finance pitch debt. It was agreed by all clubs that lotto pub squad revenue will go to pay pitch debt and mortgage. Group that misses pub squad will have to pay €300. Already €8,000 has been contributed by both clubs to 2018 costs by way of foregoing lotto money owed to them by Senior club. Pitch and ground costs and debt financing will amount to approx. €25,000 in 2019.  A proposed levy on registration fees was discussed. This money would be ringed fenced for special capital expenditure and used as a float when drawing down grants. Problem with grants is you must pay the invoices before you claim on them.  The National Club Draw tickets are available again this year. This with no set up cost to our club. The array of prizes here is very impressive. This is an under-utilised source of funding for our club. Much work however in collating the sales. Previous sales totalled €1,850.  Our main fundraiser this year was a development draw launched in March with prizes of Ed Sheeran tickets, AI hurling/football tickets, hotel break and cash as prizes. This was organised by Derek Smith and Bertie Linnane with online sales by Paul Sullivan. Club members who volunteered their time outside Pearse Stadium were Derek, Bertie Michael Bermingham and John Linnane (€700). Sponsorship was by Pascal Quinn. Almost €10K raised after expenses.  Our other fundraiser was a draw for AI tickets with funds going to player training equipment and medical costs. Significant online sales again facilitated by Paul Sullivan. Draw took place in Pier Head on15 Aug in an up for the match format and was broadcast live on Facebook. This raised over €4,400.  30 people now pay annual subscription of a total €3,000 to play lotto.  Card games were held in Sextons on Friday nights (Nines) with progressive 25 planned for February. Facilitated by Johnny Donoghue and David Huban, this returned €930 to the club.  A Last Man Standing fundraiser recently completed and netted €950 to the club.  It was good to see county championship games return to our pitch for which we were renumerated.(1K).  Club members assisted with stewarding the annual Rock and Road half marathon and 10k event in June. This is another valuable income source for our club. Special mention to Michael O’Sullivan for his trojan work in organising all the road stewards. This was worth €1,000 to our club.  Club membership and membership days. Only those paid up by the 31st of March are entitled to vote at the A.G.M. This is a G.A.A. rule and must be adhered to.  Commemorative Wall which is still ongoing is our main fundraiser this year. The wall is located in a prominent location as part of our intended amenity area and will form the heart of our club. The process consists of a minimum donation of €250 to a charitable body (K.G.A.A.) in order to qualify for tax relief. Each donor will have a commemorative engraving on the wall with name/family, name/townland on it.  Paddy Barry continues to secure €720 annual contribution for clothes bin at our pitch.  Kinvara G.A.A. has a €26k sports capital grant secured last year available to spend.  Executive have reviewed and adopted our new Lotto Rules.  Club has also recently secured a Connacht Council Grant of €1,000. Thanks to Garret for his work in this application.  We have also applied for another Sport Capital Grant last October to assist in the provision of spectator fencing. It will be later this year when we get a result on that. Thanks again to Garret for preparing and submitting the application.  A €700 Community Grant aid was secured.  Michael Canney Jnr of Churchfield Painters who sponsored club tops of €750.  Joe Byrne has donated his Council Training and Conference allowance to our club.  Lotto is our main source of funds and we must thank the sellers, pub squads and the Tuesday night crews.  Doorus NS, through Ms.Tarpey, have sold us their old Astro at a very reasonable €500 despite higher offers from elsewhere.  Noel Bermingham, Tom Joe Gill and Mick O’Hara attended recent County Convention and voted in relation to motions and nominations as agreed at previous executive meeting.  A more detailed Treasurer’s report will follow.

Grounds and Pitch Development

I would like to thank our two Pitch Development Officers Paddy Barry and Damien Mitchell who both have so ably managed our development to date. A more detailed account will follow. Our pitch this year hosted nine significant County Championship games - the highlight being a Senior Championship double header on 9th April at a time when most other pitches were unplayable. The new pitch this year required Aeration/Spiking and several applications of fertiliser. It appeared in trouble at the time of the drought but when the rains came it regained a lovely lush green sward. It was ably managed by John Linnane and Johnny Donoghue The pitches, grounds and club house got a much needed facelift in preparation for Feile with many hands on deck to help. The area in front of the Commemoration Wall was cleaned and resurfaced and thanks to those who helped on the day especially Johnny Donoghue, Paddy Barry, Bertie Linnane and John Linnane. Early this year we have much work planned, with us awaiting approval to drawdown Sports Capital Grant sum of €26,000 in order to complete the walkway to the front gate, and to install lighting along the full walkway. It is also planned to improve the parking along the Moy Road area and at the top of the old pitch.

Comhcairdeacháis

Congratulations to the following –  Michael Burke on his election as Treasurer of the Galway GAA Co Board. Mike has really made a massive impression in his first year. He follows in the footsteps of previous Kinvara GAA men who have served on the County Board: Toddie Byrne County Treasurer 1970-1972 Michael Donoghue (Tully’s house) County Chairman 1910-1911 Paddy Kelly Hurling Treasurer Joe Byrne Hurling Chairperson.  and Colm Callanan on retaining their Leinster titles (Bob O Keefe Cup) and winning Wild Geese Cup in Sydney.  Conor Whelan on his All-Star nomination and making the 2018 Galway Club Intermediate All-Star Team (his 4th in a row).  Ruairí MacSweeney who was part of the Galway minor football squad who reached the All-Ireland final.  Seamount College Boy’s Team who beat New Inn in the Connacht Colleges Senior C hurling final. 12 Kinvara lads were involved.  Dean Ivers and the Galway McDonagh U17 Hurling panel who won Division 1 Corn Michael Hogan Cup.  Conail Larrisey and Rossa Barry who also played U17 Celtic Challenge this year and just narrowly lost out in the semi-final.  All Juvenile teams who won silverware this year as alluded to earlier.  We congratulate the Camogie Club on all their success in the past year. We also congratulate the new officers for 2019 – Michael Kilkelly (Chairperson), Caroline Corless (Secretary) and Paul Dalton (Treasurer).  To those new 2019 team managers that they approved at recent Executive meetings. We wish you all well in the coming year.  Scor na nOg participants and to County winners of the Ceoil/Uirlise Music Group comprising Orla Kilkelly, Sadhbh Breathnach, Oisin Keegan and Brianna Meyler. They represented us in the Connacht Scor Finals earlier in 2018. Again on 8th December last, Kinvara’s entry to the Leiriu Staitse (Stage presentation) saw them lift gold at the County Scor and will now advance to the Connacht Finals to be held in January 2019. This talented bunch wrote and produced their own stage piece. The group comprised Sarah Talbot, Meibhinn Connolly, Abbie Donnelly, Brianna Meyler, Katie Meyler, Orla Rose Kilkelly, Darragh Kelly and Sadbh Breathnach. A special mention to our Scor Officer Maire O Keeffe for her efforts.  To all the Limerick supporters, who are part of our club, on winning All Ireland hurling title.

Buíochas

Thank you to the following –

 Garret Byrne our Chairman and acting Treasurer for his leadership and guidance all year.  Damian Mitchell, Pitch Development Officer and Club Kit Man.  Paddy Barry and his vital role in co-ordinating our pitch development and finance committee, who together with Joe Byrne liaised so well with Juvenile and Camogie clubs in restructuring our pub lotto and pitch commitments.  Joe Byrne, for chairing our Finance Committee and working hard to get our finances in order. He must also be thanked for his role as a local County Councillor in helping our club.  Our Finance Committee 2018 – Joe Byrne, Paddy Barry, Garret Byrne, Mick O’Hara, Derek Smith, Bertie Linnane, Damien Mitchell, Johnny Donoghue, Noel Bermingham and Sean O’Hanrahan.  Michael Burke for sponsorship of our intermediate team and our new club jerseys. Our intermediates sported their new jersey at our Championship opener on 7th April. Thanks also to all the players, especially Mike Smith, who helped in its design and to Ita of McInerneys’ Sports . The jerseys keep with our traditional purple and gold colours with an extra image of a Galway Bay hooker and Dunguaire Castle on it.
