And I said: "Constantly in the darkness - Where 5 that at? Ifyou want me I'll be in the bar. " - "A Case of You," 1971 Joni Mitchell has always been difficult to categorize. A folksinger, a poet, a wife, a Canadian, a mother, a party girl, a rock star, a hermit, a jazz singer, a hippie, a painter: any or all of these descriptions could apply at any given time. Moreover, her musicianship, at once reminiscent of jazz, folk, blues, rock 'n' roll, even torch songs, has never lent itself to easy categorization. Through each successive stage of her career, her songwriting has grown ever more sincere and ever less predictable; she has, at every turn, re-figured her public persona, belied expectations, confounded those fans and critics who thought they knew who she was. And it has always been precisely here, between observers' expec- tations and her performance, that we find contested terrain. At stake in the late 1960s and early 1970s was the central concern for both the artist and her audience that "Joni Mitchell" was a stable identity which could be categorized, recognized, and understood. What came across as insta- bility to her fans and observers was born of Mitchell's view that the honest reflection of growth and transformation is the basic necessity of artistic expres- sion. As she explained in 1979: You have two options. -

She is a popular music superstar, and has been since the early 1970s. Surprisingly, considering Mitchell’s Jstatus in the music world, she has often said that for her, painting is primary, music and writing secondary. Regarding Mingus, her 1979 jazz album, she commented that with it she “was trying to become the Jackson Pollock of music.” In a 1998 interview Mitchell reflected, “I think of myself as a painter who writes music.”1 In our era, when many critics and philosophers view interarts relationships with suspicion, it is remarkable that Mitchell persists so vigorously in creating work that involves multiple arts. To consider Mitchell’s art as the productions of a multi-talented person does not get us far with the works themselves, since this approach immediately invokes the abstractions and speculations of psychology. On the other hand, postmodernism has taught us that there is no absolute, tran- scendent meaning available as content for various forms. In the face of such strong objections to coalescing arts, Mitchell insists through her works that her art is intrinsically multidisciplinary and needs to be understood as such. Interarts relationships have been studied at least since Aristotle decreed that the lexis, the words, takes precedence over the opsis, the spectacle, of drama. Although recognized as being distinct, the arts have also commonly been discussed as though they are analogous. -

The pair formed Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band in 1997 and has released five albums. Blade has performed and toured with Daniel Lanois, Ellis Marsalis, Bob Dylan and many other artists and, since 2000, has been the drummer with The Wayne Shorter Quartet. He has recorded and toured with Joni Mitchell since 1995, performing on her albums Taming The Tiger, Travelogue and Shine. Jon Cowherd: Jon Cowherd is best known for his long-running partnership with drummer/bandleader Brian Blade, with whom he co-founded the GRAMMY-nominated Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band. Together, their acclaimed, influential albums showcase Cowherd's stellar keyboard work and singular compositional skills. In 2017, Cowherd released Gateway, a new recording on the exclusive, vinyl only, Newvelle record label. He has played and recorded with Joni Mitchell as part of a collaboration with Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band. Christopher Thomas: GRAMMY-nominated Christopher Thomas was born in 1970 in St. Louis, Missouri. Although he’s the only musician in his family, Thomas took to music as if he were a born legacy. His musical venture began with the violin, and then quickly gravitated towards the cello. He began his bass studies under the guidance of Henry Lowe, principal bassist of the St. Louis Symphony. Thomas later attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he studied under the tutelage of Richard Davis. -

Essays on Colour ESSAYS ON COLOUR A collection of columns from Cabinet Magazine Eleanor Maclure Introduction For every issue the editors of Cabinet Magazine, an American quarterly arts and culture journal, ask one of their regular contributors to write about a specific colour. The essays are printed as Cabinet’s regular Colours Column. To date, forty-two different colours have been the subject of discussion, beginning with Bice in their first ever issue. I first encountered Cabinet magazine when I stumbled upon Darren Wershler-Henry’s piece about Ruby, on the internet. I have since been able to collect all of the published columns and they have provided a wealth of knowledge, information and invaluable research about colour and colour names. Collectively, the writings represent a varied and engaging body of work, with approaches ranging from the highly factual to the deeply personal. From the birth of his niece in Matthew Klam’s Purple, to a timeline of the history of Lapis Lazuli mining in Ultramarine by Matthew Buckingham, the essays have provided fascinating insights into a whole range of colours, from basic terms such as black and red, to the more obscure: porphyry and puce. While some focus very much on the colour in question, others diverge into intricate tales of history, chemistry or geopolitics. There are personal anecdotes, legends and conspiracies, but more than that, the essays demonstrate the sheer diversity of ways we can talk about colour. The essays gathered here have become far more than just the background reading they began as. The aim of this book is to bring together the works, as a unique representation of the different ways we relate to, experience and interpret colours. -

Women Singer-Songwriters as Exemplary Actors: The Music of Rape and Domestic Violence KATHANNE W. GREENE At the 2016 Oscars, Lady Gaga, joined onstage by fifty rape survivors, performed the song “Til It Happens to You.” The Oscar-nominated song by Lady Gaga and Diane Warren was written for The Hunting Ground, a documentary film about campus sexual assault. Over thirty-one million people viewed the Oscar performance, which brought some in the audience to tears, and the video on Vevo has received over twenty-nine million views with another twenty-eight million views on YouTube. The film, video, and performance are the result of a growing political and social movement by young high school and college women to force schools, universities, and colleges to vigorously respond to rape and sexual harassment on campus. In response to complaints filed by more and more young women, the Obama Administration and the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) in the Department Education began investigating claims that schools, colleges, and universities were not actively and adequately responding to claims of sexual assault and harassment despite passage of the Clery Act of 1990. The Clery Act requires colleges and universities to report data on crime on campus, provide support and accommodations to survivors, and establish written policies and procedures for the handling of campus crime.1 Since 2011, the OCR has expanded its efforts to address sexual assault on campuses as violations of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination -
