Groundwood_F15_inside_cover_2pp.indd 1 2015-04-01 4:58 PM Dear Readers,

If there is a common subject to the picture books in this season’s Groundwood catalogue, it is friendship. From the odd-couple friendship of Buddy and Earl, to the mixed-species friendship in Grant and Tillie Go Walking, to the moving friendship between a boy and a girl in Two White Rabbits, our books this season demonstrate that friends often turn up when and where you aren’t expecting them.

Books are like that too. You don’t always find what you think you’re going to find when you go looking for one. There you are, searching illustrator websites hoping to find someone who draws cute animals, and next thing you know, you’ve acquired a full-length . That’s how we found Dasha Tolstikova, the creator of A Year Without Mom, and we are very grateful for the serendipity that brought us to her.

We are also grateful for all our friends — the people who sell our books for us, the people who review them both in print and online, the librarians, teachers, parents and children who buy them, read them and love them. And of course — and most importantly — we are grateful for the authors and illustrators who took such care in making the wonderful books you will find in this catalogue.

Buddy does not know what is in the box that Meredith carries into the living room. But when the small, prickly creature says he is a pirate — and that Buddy is a pirate too — the two mis- matched friends are off on a grand adventure.

In this fi rst book in the Buddy and Earl series, a dog who likes to play by the rules meets a hedgehog who knows no limits. Their friendship is tender and loyal, and their adventures are funny and imagi- native. Maureen Fergus’s text is witty and under- stated, and Carey Sookocheff’s art emphasizes both the humor and the warmth of this odd and loveable animal couple.

A delightful, quirky book for new babies and new parents.

When a new baby arrives, both the baby and the parents are in for a steep learning curve. In this book, born out of personal expe- rience, internationally renowned author/illus- trator Isol brings us a dual narrative and guide.

For babies, there’s a rich range of babies and all their functions to look at. From crying, to nursing, to peeing and pooing, to looking, to hearing, to deciding that this weird new world they’ve entered is worth staying in (because they finally recognize that in every grown-up they see a former baby), there are hours of fun and amusement, since babies love nothing better than looking at and talking about themselves.

For parents, this is a wonderful exploration of the new world this stranger-baby brings with JUVENILE FICTION / Family / New Baby / them. Amusingly written, the text presents in Parents a humorous, wry way all the facets of the new Babies & Parents baby’s reality. A playful introduction to the Anishinaabe tradition of totem animals.

Children’s love for animals and dis- guise come together as twelve speakers explain why they identify with different creatures such as a deer, beaver or moose. Delightful illustrations show the children wearing masks representing their chosen animal, while the few lines of text on each page work as a series of simple poems throughout the book.

In a brief author’s note, Danielle Daniel explains the importance of totem animals in Anishinaabe culture and how they can also act as animal guides for young children seeking to under- stand themselves and others.

A young child describes what it is like to be a migrant as she and her father travel north from Central America toward the U.S. border.

A little girl and her father travel mostly on the roof of a train known as The Beast, but the little girl doesn’t know where they are going. She counts the animals by the road, the clouds in the sky, the stars. Sometimes she sees sol- diers. She sleeps, dreaming that she is always on the move, although sometimes they are forced to stop and her father has to earn more money before they can continue their journey.

Groundwood_F15_int_5pp.indd 17 2015-04-01 5:12 PM August GRANT AND TILLIE GO WALKING WRITTEN BY MONICA KULLING ILLUSTRATED BY SYDNEY SMITH

Inspired by the life of American painter Grant Wood.

Grant Wood believed that to be a real artist, he had to live in Paris. But once he got there, he realized that to be a great painter he needed to return to the people and places — and even animals — that he knew and loved the best.

This is the sensitively imagined story of Grant and a cow named Tillie. Skillfully mixing fact with fiction, Monica Kulling’s text explores the making of an artist, while Sydney Smith’s illus- trations echo Grant Wood’s own techniques. The true story of a courageous slave who stood up for her rights.

In 1770, the slave Esperança Garcia bravely penned a letter to the governor of Piauí state, in Brazil, describing how she and her children were being mistreated and requesting permission to return to the farm where the rest of her family was living.

Before she wrote her letter, Esperança Garcia lived on a cotton farm run by Jesuit priests, where she learned to read and write — a rare opportunity for a woman, especially a slave. But one day she was separated from her hus- band and older children and taken with her two little ones to be a cook in the home of Cap- tain Antonio Vieira de Couto, where she and the other slaves were beaten and denied even the freedom to attend church. JUVENILE NONFICTION / Biography & Autobiography / Cultural Heritage In despair, Esperança Garcia wrote to the Ages 8 to 11 governor about her terrible situation, asking 8.66 x 10 • 40 pages Full-color illustration if she and her young children could return to the farm. A stunning graphic-novel debut.

A Year Without Mom follows twelve-year-old Dasha through a year full of turmoil after her mother leaves for America.

It is the early 1990s in Moscow, and political change is in the air. But Dasha is more wor- ried about her own challenges as she negoti- ates family, friendships and school without her mother. Just as she begins to find her own feet, she gets word that she is to join her mother in America — a place that seems impossibly far from everything and everyone she loves.

Eight Japanese folktales, retold in a way you’ve never imagined. Beautiful, strange and unforgettable.

A bitterly jealous brother, a cold- hearted husband, a monk who mistakes desire for piety, a fraudulent merchant who meets his match in a supernatural river otter, a samurai who makes the ultimate sacrifice — the motives underlying these traditional Japanese folktale characters are explored with haunting results.

Prompted by the sometimes illogical and per- plexing actions of folktale characters (Why doesn’t the wolf kill Little Red Riding Hood right away?), master storyteller Rui Umezawa revisits eight popular Japanese folktales, delv- ing beneath their sometimes baffling plot lines to highlight the psychological motivations behind the characters’ actions.

Just because you see something doesn’t mean it’s really there.

In the town of Leamington, Ontario, a seventeen-year-old boy is suddenly stricken by a schizophrenic episode and wakes up in hospital. The boy’s name is Calvin, and he is plagued by hallucinations.

As the hallucinations persist, Calvin comes to believe that the answer lies in performing one grand and incredible gesture. And so he decides to walk across Lake Erie. In January. The temperatures have been below freezing for weeks. The ice should hold . . .

The lake, it turns out, is more marvelous, and more treacherous, than Calvin had ever imagined — populated by abandoned cars (joy ride!), ice-fishing eccentrics, psychokiller snow beings, and a not-so-mythical sea witch named Jenny Greenteeth. A story about love — “as mad, bitter and wonderful as life itself.” (Stuttgarter Zeitung)

Charlotte’s life is changed forever when her parents’ marriage breaks up, and Charlotte has to leave her beloved house and her old life behind. Then two very different boys cross her path, and a new emotion creeps into her sadness and anger — an emotion that is both confusing and sweet.

Charlotte falls in love with Carlo, tries to stay friends with tough-guy Sulzer and faces the jealousy of the cool-girl clique at school. As she watches her parents cope, sometimes haplessly, with changes in their own personal lives, and as she deals with a new baby brother, a potential stepfather and unexpected house moves, she realizes that love is a messy and risky business.

If grownups can make such a hash of it, how on earth can a fifteen-year-old cope?

But Charlotte does cope, magnificently, as she tries to figure out how to be a big sister, a JUVENILE FICTION/ Family / Marriage & Divorce daughter, a friend, a good person. And in the Ages 12 and up end she finds the courage to take responsibility 5 x 7.5 • 128 pages for her own actions, and sets off to be with the boy she loves. 978-1-55498-803-7 Hardcover with jacket $16.95
