For me reading and listening this book again and again for a month was taking a semester course, Jane Mayer was my professor. The case Mayer builds against the billionaire class is comprehensive and extremely depressing. Through numerous channels, they have used their money to influence the course of public policy and discourse, legitimizing points of view that had no legitimacy many years ago. Jane Mayer does an amazing job following the money. Drink that down. Persuasive, timely and necessary. Libertarian views on taxes and regulation, once far outside the mainstream and still rejected by most Americans, are ascendant in the majority of state governments, the Supreme Court, and Congress. Their front groups demonized the American government, casting it as the enemy rather than the democratic representative of its citizens. In her new preface, Jane Mayer discusses the results of the most recent election and Donald Trump's victory, and how, despite much discussion to the contrary, this was a huge victory for the billionaires who have been pouring money in the American political system. But I couldn't. The attack is being conducted by the same organizations mentioned by Mayer making it obvious who is behind it. In a meticulously detailed and researched book, Jane Mayer recounts the rise in political power of a handful of ultra conservative self-interested billionaires in the US over the last 30 years or so. Let the looting begin. It is really starting to feel a bit like we are living in a Plutocracy. Foundations became big contributors to colleges and universities, including Ivy League schools such as Harvard and Yale, with courses entitled Law and Economics. Category: Domestic Politics 21st Century U. These include being burned alive, starving to death for refusing to eat a particular kind of soup, and having ones thumbs cut off for the crime of sucking on them. Charles was much taken with a nutjob named Robert Lefevre , who established what he called The Freedom School. Republicans have lost control of their party. The other was an utterly private event whose significance would not be noticed for years. It's very empowering to understand how and why ALEC is just a tool, and so many of our politicians not all! Mayer has changed the way I take in news. The center even held that smog was good because it prevented skin cancer, an idea that was put forth in a winning case against the Clean Air Act in a DC Circuit Court in Thirdly, let me say that Charles Koch is very, very smart. Yes, you'll still learn more details even if you understand the big picture already. And it is not at all a pretty picture. No rating. Libertarian views on taxes and regulation, once far outside the mainstream and still rejected by most Americans, are ascendant in the majority of state governments, the Supreme Court, and Congress. The Kochs had poured huge money into the state contests and virtually hijacked the Congressional delegation and the state legislature, then installed one of their own as budget director, who then decimated the budgets for public education and environmental protection. We all share the land. What happened next has been excised from the official corporate history of Koch Industries. But they were profitable. Community Reviews. Our government has been hijacked by billionaires who are only interested in making themselves money. Using the same publicists as the tobacco companies had used many years ago to obfuscate the true dangers of tobacco, these individuals have formed think tanks, backed political candidates, and influenced the curricula in high schools and universities in ways that have obfuscated issues such as global warming, public health care, the regulation of industry's impact on the environment and the root causes of unemployment and poverty. They have created so-called "think tanks" and have infiltrated universities George Mason is one in order to fool Americans, especially under-educated Americans, into believing that the billionaires' objectives are good for America. Yet, this book explains everything that is going on in politics and our country today. Jane Mayer. They say whatever they want in order to accomplish only ONE thing: their bottom line. Dark Money The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right 1st edition Writer Jane does speak of Soros and she does speak a little about the fact that the democrats run on money too. Why did they do this? Mayer has changed the way I take in news. Ever wonder why North Carolina, a Democratic blue state for decades, would suddenly go red? Why do hedge- fund billionaires pay a far lower tax rate than middle-class workers? It does this through the application of billions of dollars to stealth organizations, set up specifically to propagandize against government programs and policies that the uber-rich oppose. Download as PDF Printable version. The Koch brothers quickly realized the need to raise hundreds of millions of dollars. Initially I was cautious, because in theory there is nothing wrong to expose people to different ideas in a pluralistic society. He and his brother had built and financed a private political machine that had helped cripple a twice elected Democratic president and begun to supplant the Republican Party. Like Davis, the Koch family benefited from the venture. The central premise though is something everyone should know about. Related Searches. We all share the land. How their wanton disregard for human life and the environment in their pursuit of profit has led to the deaths and misery of millions of individuals around the world. Fundraising campaigns that stagger the imagination, still using the shell-game premise, that led to nearly billion dollars just to capture all the seats in congress and the senate. They quote Hayek and think that anyone is free to chose to be rich or poor. In a riveting and indelible feat of reporting, Jane Mayer illuminates the history of an elite cadre of plutocrats—headed by the Kochs, the Scaifes, the Olins, and the Bradleys—who have bankrolled a systematic plan to fundamentally alter the American political system. No rating. Our government has been hijacked by billionaires who are only interested in making themselves money. Fuck you. They shouldn't have to pay and income tax. The depth of the undermining of democracy by a very small number of very wealthy people is astonishing. Over the past thirty years they have helped finance and organize an interlocking network of think tanks, academic programs and news media outlets that far exceeds anything the liberal opposition could manage. Dark Money The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right 1st edition Reviews Trade wars are bad for business and cannot be what the Koch brothers wanted. When you have a few people who are so wealthy that they can effectively buy the political system, the political system is going to tend to serve their interests. The political operatives the network employs are disciplined, smart, and at times ruthless. Research for this book was done without the cooperation of Charles or David Koch nor many others in their network of funders. The difference is that universities are supposed to permit open dialogue and exchange of ideas and not be places for indoctrination of innocent students with dictated propaganda prescribed by outside special interests. Their ultimate goal, Mayer argues, is to remake the USA along the lines of their radical free-market beliefs, destroying the post-war consensus of market socialism and strong government which led to decreasing economic inequality and high levels of social mobility in the post-war decades until the s. There, he earned a degree in chemical engineering and joined the boxing team. David Koch wanted him on the ticket and told Romney to do it. No longer will I listen to a politician without wondering who is paying for him or her. But at the end of it all, I am still perplexed. Corporate governance is beginning to sound like an oxymoron. Sinister as much of the system was, one could entertain the idea that a new regulatory regime might someday bring it under greater public scrutiny and control. It is not easy to uncover the inner workings of an essentially secretive political establishment. Also a great bio and history of the Kochs. It does this through application of billions of dollars to programs promoting the redrawing of voting districts to minimize and eliminate, where possible, the chances that candidates with any respect for democracy might be elected to public office. And the presidency. Charles was much taken with a nutjob named Robert Lefevre , who established what he called The Freedom School. For reasons related to my busy life and not the quality of the book, I listened to the audio of Dark Money sporadically over several weeks. Robert Reich, professor of political science is quoted as saying that such private foundations are 'troubling because they [are] considered deeply and fundamentally anti- democratic Mitch McConnell, I hope you and the rest of you soul-selling goons really do believe in hell, because I'm sadistically delighted by the idea of you guys having to drink yourselves to sleep every night expecting that you're going to burn there for allll eternity.

Apple Introduction For years, there have been powerful arguments that education can best be understood as a political act, as strongly connected to the relations of dominance and subordination in the larger society and to the movements that seek to interrupt these relations (see, for example, Apple, 2004, 2013; Apple, M., Au, W., Gandin, 2009). This is even more visible in the current political context of the United States. Regardless of the outcome, the 2016 presidential election campaign has been one of the strangest on record. Perhaps one of the most startling moments of the 2016 primary election came when conservative billionaire Charles Koch stated his potential interest in Democratic candidate Hilary Clinton over Republican front-runner, Donald Trump (LoBianco, 2016). • Len's Dark Money
Democratic Republic or Secret Plutocracy A Brief Synopsis of ‘Dark Money’ by Jane Mayer Len Leritz 1 Preface In the U.S., “dark money” is a term used to describe donations given to nonprofit organizations — primarily social welfare and trade association groups — that can receive unlimited donations from corporations, individuals, and unions, and spend funds to influence elections, but are not required to disclose their donors. While technically these organizations cannot have political activity — such as creating ads advocating for or against candidates — as their primary purpose, these dark money groups do change public attitudes and have a large cultural impact. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-partisan organization, spending by dark money organizations has increased from less than $5.2 million in 2006 to well over $300 million in the 2012 presidential election cycle.1 Nearly $900 million has already been pledged by Republican donors for the 2016 presidential election cycle. There is not good data on how much has been pledged by Democratic donors. I recently read Jane Mayer’s new book, Dark Money, which discloses the secret four-decade campaign by a handful of wealthy white men (and a few women) to change public opinion in order to gain political power so they could serve their own self-interests.2 I was very disturbed by the story she tells. They began as an anti-government, fringe libertarian movement, but in time decided it was to their benefit to align with the Republican Party to gain more traction. At the same time, they made some attempts to influence in the Democratic Party with much less success.

Main Themes 1. The infrastructure on the right has been in development a long time a. The financial, institutional, and ideological infrastructure we see today on the right did not come from nowhere. It is the culmination of a hundred years of strategic efforts on the part of a small group of wealthy conservatives. th th b. A small group of late 19 – early 20 century American families amassed a gigantic amount of wealth. Some of them developed very strong political ideologies that focused almost exclusively on the protection and expansion of that wealth. This political ideology is pro-business, anti-regulation, anti-tax, anti-social safety net, anti-public education. The core political ideology is the belief that the sole purpose of government is to protect individual property rights and wealth. c. It was largely the second generation of this wealth that, during the mid-late 20th century, formalized a set of political strategies and institutions that led to the infrastructure we see now on the Right.

However, to date the U.S. government has remained largely paralyzed. Now new Greenpeace research has shed light on the sources of paralysis, a multi-decade war on democ- racy by the kingpins of carbon – the coal, oil, and gas industries allied with a handful of self-interested libertarian1 billionaires. Their strat- egy has aimed to (1) shrink, disable and paralyze progressive govern- ment and (2) manipulate the remaining levers of government power by (a) eliminating all restrictions on private money in elections and (b) disenfranchising blacks, Latinos, the young, the elderly, and 1 Although many authors use “conservative” and “libertarian” interchangeably, these terms represent distinct political philosophies, which sometimes compete for political power, especially within the Republican Party.
