Female interpersonal relationships are complex – women often work to motivate, encourage and transform one another but can just as easily use tactics like intimidation, manipulation, and exploitation in order to save their own jobs and reputations. Through the lens of post-feminist theory, this thesis examines significant female interpersonal relationships in each film to illustrate how femininity is constructed and driven by consumer culture in the fashion industry themed films. Ankara developed a more independent foreign policy that entails both areas for cooperation with Brussels but also for conflicts with the EU and its member states. Cases in point are the cooperation on migration on the one hand side and tensions with Greece and Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean on the other. The EU needs working channels for communication and cooperation with Turkey. However, membership negations stall, talk on visa liberalization stuck, and the European Council blocks the opening of talks to re-negotiate the Customs Union.

    Human Rights of Women Wearing the Veil in Western Europe Research Paper I. Introduction The present paper analyses legislation, policies, and case-law surrounding religious attire in a number of countries in Western Europe and how they affect the human rights of women and girls who wear the veil in Western Europe. It also more broadly analyses discrimination and violence experienced by women wearing the veil in Europe learning from their own voice. Throughout the paper, the terminology ‘veil’ is used to refer to a variety of religious attire worn mostly, but not exclusively, by Muslim women. There are different types of clothing that cover the body. This research is focused on manifestations of veils that are the subject of regulation in several Western European Countries. They include the hijab (a piece of clothing that covers the head and neck, but not the face), niqab (a piece of clothing that covers the face, where only the eyes are visible), burqa (a piece of clothing that covers both the face and eyes), jilbab (a loose piece of clothing that covers the body from head to toe), or abaya, kaftan, kebaya (a loose, often black, full body cover overcoat). The head and body covers are often combined. In several countries, some of these clothing are based on traditional costumes rather than religion and are often worn by rural communities in the countries of origins. The paper also uses the terminology ‘full-face veil’ or ‘face-covering veil’ to refer to both niqab and burqa. Furthermore, it refers to burkini, a swimsuit that covers the body from head to ankles, completed by a dress.

Cypriot Population Turkish Is the The demography of north Cyprus is one of the most contested issues related to the island’s division. In particular, the number of indigenous Turkish Cypriots and Turkish immigrants living in the north has long been a source of dispute, not only among the island’s diplomats and politicians but also among researchers and activists. Until recently, the political use of demog- raphy has hindered comprehensive study of the ethno-demographic make-up of the north, while at the same time making a thorough demographic study all the more imperative. The present report addresses this situation by providing an analysis of the results of the 2006 census of north Cyprus, comparing these fi gures with the results of the previous census. The report focuses mainly on identifying the percentage of the population of north Cyprus who are of Turkish-mainland origin and also possess Turkish Cypriot citizenship – an important factor given claims that such citizens play an signifi cant role in elections in the north. In addi- tion, the report examines the arrival dates of Turkish nationals in order to analyze patterns of migration. This, in turn, is indicative of the numbers of naturalized Turkish Cypriot citizens who have arrived in Cyprus as part of an offi cial policy. The report also presents estimates for Turkish Cypriot emigration to third countries, based on immigration and census fi gures from the two main host countries: the United Kingdom and Australia. Following analysis of these latter fi gures and the results of the 2006 census, it is argued that claims of massive emigration by Turkish Cypriots to third countries are largely misleading.

Introduction The Beards were a prominent family in Norwalk in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Martha Beard whose husband died on the passage to America emigrated from England in 1639 with six children. From these Beards of Milford descended the Beards of Norwalk. Algernon E. Beard built a house on Flax Road in Norwalk in 1842. This house called “Rockcliffe” was the grandest of the Greek Revival houses in the city. A. E. Beard was a wholesale distributor of shoes which he purchased from independent local craftsmen and sold along the Atlantic coast from Boston to Richmond. By 1839 he also began buying and selling hats. Algernon Beard dealt heavily in furs as well, selling them to hat makers and thus making money on both ends of the transaction. By 1840 beaver fur-felt hats had gone out of fashion, as men of means came to prefer silk top hats, but when the Hungarian patriot and reformer Louis Kossuth visited the USA, fur-felt hats became popular once more.

    The Equinet Report ‘Faith in Equality: Religion and Belief in Europe’ highlights recent legal developments that have taken place in the field of discrimination based on religion and belief. LEGAL FRAMEWORK EU protection against discrimination on the grounds of religion and belief is incomplete. EU law specifically prohibits differential treatment based on religion only in the area of employment (including vocational training). This gap would be covered by adopting the Horizontal Directive, proposed in 2008. EMPLOYMENT Discrimination cases have been identified in areas such as recruitment and selection; headgear and religious symbols; religious harassment in the workplace; justified occupational requirement; opting out of certain work tasks; work patterns; and conflicts of rights. EDUCATION Consistent with the trend shown in our 2011 report, a majority of the cases reported to equality bodies across the EU which deal with religious freedom in education are connected to the Muslim religion, particularly with Muslim women’s dress. GOODS & SERVICES In relation to religious discrimination in the provision of goods and services, justifications for discriminatory behaviour towards certain religious groups have to be examined thoroughly, be they health and safety concerns, the need to maintain security or the aim of enhancing integration. MANIFESTING RELIGION & BELIEF IN PUBLIC Although the full-face veil and the burkini are not comparable, they are both the subject of the will of politicians to legislate against forms of religious garments. Our report finds that the European Court of Human Rights' ‘living together’ argument for a blanket ban on the full-face veil does not sufficiently delineate what it means in respect of restricting fundamental rights, including the right to freedom of religion.

Introduction In May 2004, ten countries joined the European Union (EU), to be followed by two more countries most probably in 2007. Turkey, together with Croatia, is the next country in line to enter the pre- accession process for membership. Turkey was given candidate status in December 1999 at the Helsinki European Council summit. How- ever, accession negotiations with Turkey will only start if the European Commission concludes that Turkey has indeed met the Copenhagen political criteria and EU member governments make a positive deci- sion at their European Council meeting in December 2004.1 Unlike the case of other candidate countries, the decision “to give or not to give” a negotiating date to Turkey stands as a very great challenge.

TARIK OĞ UZLU Department of International Relations, Bilkent University, Turkey This article argues that, despite the optimistic expectations of the international community, the accession process of the Republic of Cyprus with the European Union (EU) has so far only contributed to further ‘securitization’ and ‘perpetuation’ of the conflict. It is argued that the dangers of EU membership of a divided Cyprus would far outweigh the expected benefits. As a consequence, the paper contends that if the EU wants to make a constructive contribution to the resolution of the Cyprus dispute, it should adopt a new approach – one that foresees the active support of the European countries to the EU membership of a loosely-centralized federal Cyprus. Compared to the traditional sovereign sensitive approaches, the author argues that neither the confederal approach of the Turkish Cypriots nor the tightly -centralized federal approach of the Greek Cypriots could find a niche within the post -modern and post-Westphalian environment of the European Union. Given that the EU is the only institution that could affect the incentive-matrixes of the interested parties in the conflict, the author concludes that a change of mind is required by the EU for a breakthrough to come about.

Buna bağlı olarak haber medyasında öne çıkan konular ve bu konuların haberleştirilmesinde kullanılan dilsel pratikler geniş bir inceleme alanı olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışmada ise medya gündeminin çok sık değiştiği ya da değiştirildiği yönündeki tartışmaların hız kazandığı bir yıl olarak 2009 yılında, yaygın medyanın değişmez konu başlıkları, bu konulardan olu şan medya gündemini kimin belirlediği, nasıl şekillendirdiği, gündemin değişim sıklığı ve hızı, haber sunumunda öne çıkan çerçeveler gibi sorulara yanıtlar aranmıştır. Bu çerçevede 1 Ocak-31 Aralık 2009 tarihleri arasında yaygın medyaya mensup Akşam, Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, Milliyet, Posta, Radikal, Sabah, Taraf, Yeni Şafak ve Zaman gazetelerinin manşet ve sürmanşetleri içerik analizi yöntemiyle incelenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda 2009 yılında en fazla gündemde kalan konuların Ergenekon davasına ilişkin gelişmeler ve Kürt açılımı tartışmaları olduğu saptanmıştır.
