RINK 2008 SEASON PREVIEW The 2008 edition of the Xavier University Musketeer baseball team will look to build on the success of last year’s squad, a team that recorded the most wins in program history (17) and made the A-10 Tournament for the first time since 2003. Third-year head coach Scott Googins will aspire to lead his team back to the conference tournament and another record-breaking season alongside nine seniors who are hoping to close out their careers at XU on a positive note.

“This season will hopefully be an exciting one,” said Googins. “We have more depth, have worked harder this off season and hopefully we can build off the success we experienced in last year’s conference tournament. The team as a whole is confident and there is a good feeling in the clubhouse.”

The Musketeers return three of the four top starters from last year’s pitching staff, including 2007 Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team member senior Michael Lucas. XU’s top returning offensive threat is senior Robbie Kelley, who tallied a .304 batting average a year ago. Xavier’s 2008 schedule looks to provide a challenge for the Musketeers and includes match-ups with three teams that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago. For the last weekend in February, XU will travel to No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt for the Music City Classic for a big early-season test. Xavier will play 11 games away from Cincinnati to start the season and 22 games at Hayden field over the course of the year, with 14 of those home contests being played in the month of April.

“Our four team captains are seniors Mike Creevy, Dan Hayden, Robbie Kelley and Michael Lucas,” commented Googins. “Not only are these guys leaders on the field but off the field as well. I will rely on them to keep the guys positive and working toward their goals.” PITCHERS With the hopes of returning to the A-10 Championship this season, Xavier will need to have strong pro- duction from the mound spearheaded by four senior team members. Senior Michael Lucas along with classmates Kyle Cowden, Mike Creevy and David Hartman threw a combined 164.5 innings in 2007 and will be relied upon to take on more of the pitching load in 2008. The Musketeers will be able to go deep into the bullpen with several new faces joining the squad as well.

Heading into 2008, junior Charlie Leesman will likely be the Musketeers’ number one hurler. Leesman will provide XU with a different look on the mound as one of five lefties on the staff and he is Xavier’s nomination for the 2008 Golden Spikes award which recognizes the country’s top collegiate baseball player. The Cincinnati native put together an impressive showing in 2007, starting in 13 of his 14 ap- pearances for the Blue and White. He was third on the team in (47) and his 4.22 ERA is the second-best of the returnees. Leesman pitched 81.0 innings a year ago, including one complete game and one shutout. Mike Creevy Lucas was the team leader in strikeouts a year ago (63) over 96.1 innings pitched. He started 15 times in 16 appearances and tossed a team-high three complete games, tallied a team-high two shutouts and posted a 4.48 ERA. The right-handed pitcher from Washington, Pa. was named to the 2007 Atlantic 10 All-Championship team after tossing a complete game four- shutout in XU’s first tournament game versus Rhode Island. Lucas enters 2008 in sixth place for career innings pitched (259.0).

The Sunday starting slot will be up for grabs with sophomore transfer Danny Rosenbaum, Creevy and sophomore Zac Richard as the most likely candidates. Rosenbaum made 12 appearances last season at Indiana, striking out 15 batters over 19.2 innings of work and will be a huge contributer for XU in ’08. Creevy started twice last year, tossing 12.1 innings while striking out 12 batters before earning a medical redshirt due to injury. He is looking to bounce back in 2008 and play a significant role in the rotation. Richard had the second most appearances last season for Xavier (20) and got the starting nod eight times. He collected a team-high seven saves and has proven that he can start a game and go the distance but he can also come out of the pen and shut the door on the end of a game. Richard struck out 30 batters over 54.2 innings.

Hartman provided quality innings out of the bullpen last season, appearing in 17 games for the Musketeers. He carried a team-low 2.79 ERA and tallied a team second-best three saves in only 19.1 innings of work. The West Chester, Ohio native struck out 10 batters on his way to a 3-1 re- cord. Cowden made 17 appearances in 2007 as well, starting in two of those contests. The righty from Zionsville, Ind., pitched 37.2 innings, striking out 17 along the way.

Hartman and Cowden, along with juniors Brett Greenwell and Joe Kohler, will all potentially play significant roles in the Xavier rotation either in relief or mid-week starts. Greenwell came out of the bullpen 12 times last season and had one start as well. In his one start, he tied his career high in innings pitched with 6.0 and allowed only three runs while notching a career-high four strikeouts. Kohler came out of the pen 11 times last season and threw a career-high 6.2 innings of relief at Toledo, allowing only one earned run while striking out three.

Freshmen Tom Shirley and Ben Thomas have the potential to be mid-week starters for XU this season. Classmates Brian Bobinski, Shane Liska, Brian Muransky, and Nathan Mutsch will each look to step up with spot starts and quality innings of relief in 2008. Charlie Leesman CATCHERS Junior transfer Billy O’Conner will be the front runner to replace departing senior Jordan Wolf behind the plate. The Cincinnati native started in nine of the 22 games he played in at Indiana in 2007. He finished fourth on the team with a .310 batting average and had nine hits to go with nine RBIs while committing one error in 31 chances. O’Conner, interestingly enough, caught Leesman in high school.

Battling O’Conner for the starting role will be senior Danny Hayden, who did not play last season due to injury but has shown tremendous improvement. In 2006, Hayden started in 44 games for XU, playing in 48. He finished the season with a .237 batting average with four home runs and 21 RBIs to go along with his .975 fielding percentage.

Senior Tyler Aholt looks to put in work behind the plate as well. Aholt started in 14 games for the Musketeers last year, including in XU’s A-10 Championship win over St. Bonaventure. He had his best game of the season against No. 21 Kentucky on Feb. 28, notching a career-high two hits and driving in the first run of his career in the ninth inning.

Freshmen Ryan Bellamy and Josh Murphy will also be taking some of the load behind the plate. Bellamy is a great catch-and-throw guy who had a good offensive showing this past fall. INFIELDERS Senior Robbie Kelley started in 48 games last year, primarily at first base, but will likely wear many hats in 2008, including first base and left field. Kelley put together two hitting streaks a year ago as he carried a 10-game streak from April 6 to April 21 going 16-for-39 (.410) with 14 RBIs, four doubles and two home runs helping XU to an 8-2 record and raised his average 74 points. He committed a miniscule four errors in 313 chances and combined on 22 double plays in 2007.

Michael Lucas Junior Steve Brown and sophomore Drew Schmidt will fight for the starting nod at second. Brown started 26 of the 30 games he played in during 2007 and finished fifth on the team with a .293 average and was also fifth with three stolen bases. Schmidt started 49 times a year ago primarily at third and he was third on the team in assists (77) and committed only 10 errors for the season.

Junior transfer Jordan Conley looks to be the contender to replace departing senior Matt Waskerwitz at short while freshman Phil Bauer will also battle for time at that position. Freshman John McCambridge has the potential to start at third with Schmidt vying for time on the hot corner as well.

Sophomore Bobby Freking along with classmate Zac Richard and freshman Ben Thomas could also see time at first if Kelley plays left field. Adam Pasono OUTFIELDERS One should include center field when talking about solidifying the middle of a defensive lineup and the Musketeers have this spot covered with the speedy junior Adam Pasono. The DePere, Wis. native started in 56 of the 58 games he played in last year and is one of the top returning everyday players offensively for the Musketeers. He finished 2007 ranked second on the team with 11 doubles, third with 64 hits and seven stolen bases, fourth with 32 runs, fifth in RBIs and sixth with a .270 average. In the field, Pasono did not commit a single error and was fourth on the team with 152 putouts.

Junior Jack Bonnikson has made a strong push for the starting nod in left field after starting in four of the 10 games he played in last season. Along with Bonnikson, senior Andy Zellers will battle for time in left. Zellers started in 25 games last year, including the last 12 contests of the season. He scored 15 runs off 25 hits and tallied 18 RBIs and finished the A-10 Championship 7-for-17 (.412) at the plate with four RBIs, a double and two runs.

Junior Neil Lindgren is recovering from an off season injury after starting 57 times for the Musketeers a year ago, primarily in right field. Lindgren exhibited a good eye last season as he drew a team-high 32 walks and was a big contributor overall offensively.

On the right side, junior Sean Farrell will log significant time in right field for the Musketeers. He -ap peared in 50 games in 2007 and got the starting nod in 40 games primarily as the designated hitter. He finished fourth on the team with a .296 batting average and third in on-base percentage at .402. Senior Nick Egloff could also see some time in right field.

Freshmen Danny Rinck and Matt Kleifges will likely play supporting roles on the outfield behind Pasono in center.

Scott Googins begins his third season at the helm for the Xavier baseball team. The 2007 season saw Googins take the Musketeers back to the Atlantic 10 Champi- onship, numerous school records broken and a player drafted.

In just his second season as the head coach, Googins guided his squad to the most conference wins in school history (17), while the team also set a new mark by sweeping four A-10 series. As a team Xavier finished with a 29-31 record overall and a 17-10 mark in conference play. The 29 wins tied for the fifth most in school history and the team also won two games in the A-10 Championship, which was the most by any Mus- keteer squad in five trips. The trip to the A-10 Championship marked the first appearance for XU since the 2003 season.

After starting the 2007 campaign with a 4-18 record, Googins engineered one of the best turnarounds in school history as the Blue and White proceeded to go 17-3 over the next 20 games. Xavier would end the season with a 25-13 record and earn a four seed in the A-10 Championship.

Additionally, the 2007 squad broke its previous school record in fielding percentage, marking two of the three best fielding percentages in school history over the past two seasons under Googins. The Blue and White also finished the year tops in school history for at bats (2052), hits (561), saves (12) and innings pitched (523.0).

Not only did school records fall but Xavi- er tied a seven-year-old NCAA record for most hits in the second inning at Rich- mond as XU tallied 12 hits (all singles and doubles) to score 14 runs. The Mus- keteers followed that performance with a 23-run effort at Toledo, which ranked tied for third-most in school history.

The end to a great season saw Xavier senior Jordan Wolf become the fourth highest Musketeer to be drafted as he was taken by the in the 13th round. For his efforts during the year, Wolf was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team.

In his first season as skipper, Googins led the Musketeers to a 19-37 mark overall and a 9-18 record in Atlantic 10 play, while establishing top marks in statistical team categories over the past five sea- sons. The Googins Family

24 As a team in 2006, XU recorded the highest fielding percentage over the past five seasons at .964. The 2006 squad also had the highest mark in hits (482), walks (227), total bases (660) and triples (nine) as a team in the past five seasons.

Googins stepped into his role after spending the 2005 season as an assistant coach for the Musketeers. The 2005 campaign saw Xavier send its first player into the MLB Draft since 2001 and place one player on the Atlantic 10 All-Confer- ence Second Team after notching a 19-35 record and a 9-15 mark in the A-10.

“I am very excited to build on the strong foundation that has been laid here at Xavier,” stated Googins. “I feel very strongly about the mission of Xavier University. I am excited about being a part of the Xavier family and continuing the work we began last season.”

In four seasons at Miami (OH), Googins was an integral part of the Red- Hawks’ success. While at Miami, Googins was a part of four straight Mid- American Conference Tournament appearances. With outfield being his primary focus, he saw two of his players leave for the professional ranks with one garnering All-American honors before his departure. Googins was also in charge of academics, travel and field maintenance. The team recorded an overall 2.88 grade-point aver- age, the highest among men’s teams at Miami.

Before coming to Miami (OH), Googins had an eight-year stint as an assistant coach with Indiana University. During his time at IU, he was a part of the 1996 Big 10 Champi- onship team and traveled to the Wichita State Regional for the NCAA Tournament. He was responsible for the coaching and conditioning of the Hoosier catchers, assisted with the outfielders and hitters. While his in-game duties included first base coach, off the field Googins assisted in the recruiting process, facility and field maintenance, academic progress, and the supervision of student managers.

The Granville, Ohio, native was a catcher at Ohio Wesleyan. He and his wife, Jody, a former Xavier volleyball standout, have a daughter, Ellie, and a son, Tommy.

Quotes on Googins “In 30 years of college coaching, I have never had a finer assistant than Scott Googins. Scott brings a lot of energy and positively represents the program. He likewise is a great asset to the Xavier athletic department. Scott is not about himself, but gives 100% of himself for the players, coaches and others with whom he is involved. As an assistant coach, Scott has been a leader and a factor of success. As a head coach, he is prepared to maximize his players’ abilities ath- letically and academically, which will enable them to achieve their collegiate goals and nurture their aspirations for life.” - , Former Indiana Univ. Head Baseball Coach

“Scott Googins has long been thought of as one of the finest young assistant coaches in the Midwest. He is a student of the game, and has been an outstanding recruiter at Indiana, Miami and Xavier Universities. We are happy that Xavier University has given him this opportunity. He will do an excellent job.” - Joe Carbone, Head Baseball Coach at Ohio Univ.

“Scott Googins is an excellent choice for Xavier University. He has been in college coaching for the past 12 years. He is very familiar with the Xavier program after spending the 2005 season with Coach Simonds. People are going to see quickly that Scott will do what it takes to bring Xavier back to the top of the A-10. More importantly though, they will see a coach that is dedicated to the kids. Scott Googins is an unbelievable person, and he will make the Xavier commu- nity proud.” - , Head Baseball Coach at Indiana Univ.

“Scott has a true understanding of how to run a Division I program. He has been a part of some top notch programs and understands what it takes to build a winner. The Xavier players will greatly benefit from his experience and knowledge.” - Dan Simonds, Head Baseball Coach at Miami (Ohio) Univ.

“I have known Coach Googins for many years. I have found him very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the game of baseball. I would recommend Coach Googins for any player that is interested in learning the game the right way.” - Chris Sabo, Former Third Baseman from 1988-93 Three-Time All-Star and 1988 NL Rookie of the Year
