  • Krenzel, Kern Help Local Charity by Eric Loughry
Krenzel, Kern Help Local Charity By Eric Loughry Early in his first day as a former Ohio State quarterback, Craig Krenzel met with the last OSU signal caller before him to lead the Buckeyes to a national championship. The morning following his last game in scarlet and gray — a 35-28 win over Kansas State in the 2004 Fiesta Bowl Jan. 4 — Krenzel had breakfast with Rex Kern, who was under center when OSU defeated Southern California in the 1969 Rose Bowl to claim the 1968 national title. More than three decades would pass before the 2002 OSU team, quarterbacked by Krenzel, would win the national title with a 31-24 double-overtime win over Miami (Fla.) in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Krenzel and Kern have been linked ever since. Kern even found his way down to the postgame interview area following OSU’s national championship win to congratulate Krenzel, who like Kern before him was the MVP of the bowl game that decided the national title. Krenzel was again the offensive MVP of the Fiesta Bowl his senior season. Hours later, he met with Kern, who had a proposition for him. Kern had an idea on how to utilize the connection between the two and showed Krenzel a print featuring both of them. The focal point is an image taken of the two together following the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Kern asked Krenzel if he would be interested in signing, along with Kern, each limited-edition print titled “The Quarterbacks,” with an allottment of the proceeds benefiting the Miracle for Madison and Friends Fund.

  • Letter from the President
VARSITY O 2019 FALL NEWS LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Fellow Varsity O Members, Happy Fall! Autumn officially means many things: students back on The Ohio State campus, the crisp air with crunchy leaves beneath each step, our fall-sport Buckeyes taking their respective fields and courts, Saturdays in The SHOE, and… Varsity O’s most exciting time of year! In early September, we celebrated our 42nd year of The Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame. Our incredible inductees were legends in their sport, Olympic medalists, international icons, and can I just say, “Amazing human beings that were fun, kind, humble, and gracious to be awarded with such prestige!” As we roll into October, I want to remind all of you of our Homecoming Tailgate which will be at the French Fieldhouse on October 5th from 4-7pm prior to the Michigan State game. This is a great opportunity to join Varsity O and fellow Buckeyes for a food buffet, cash-bar, music, corn-hole, photo booth, and other fun surprises we have planned. We will also be celebrating our Jim Jones Career Achievement Award and Varsity O Loyalty award winners as well! Through the 2019-2020 academic year, the University is celebrating its storied and proud history of 150 years. We are calling it, “The Sesquicentennial Year of Celebration”. And although our Athletic Department does not date quite that far back, certainly the contributions and traditions of OSU Athletics has played a storied role in the history of the BEST university in the country. Since the earliest days, OSU athletes have inspired millions across the globe, and have delivered some of the most historic and thrilling moments in collegiate sports.

  • Throwback Film Study: 2003 Fiesta Bowl
Throwback Film Study: 2003 Fiesta Bowl With the return of football up in the air, now serves as a perfect time for reflection on the history of football, and the strategic evolution of the game. To do that, the film study will be spending the offseason looking back at classic Ohio State games. Today’s film study revolves around Ohio State’s 2003 national title victory over Miami, 31-24. Video is from this cut-up. Last week’s film study can be found here. Mark Dantonio’s 2002 playbook is here. With the benefit of more than 17 years to reflect, it’s easy to say that Ohio State’s gameplan for the 2003 national title game was the obvious one, and that the success it had makes total sense. After all, Miami did have a massive, glaring weakness in the form of quarterback Ken Dorsey, and he essentially served as the only form of any weakness on the entire roster. Again, that’s easy to say in retrospect, because in 2020, Dorsey looks a lot less like a threat, and a lot more like a soft spot that can be exploited to the point of nearly crippling one of the most talented college football teams ever assembled. At the time, however, Dorsey was largely considered a strong member of that team. His 3,369 yards, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2002 was enough to earn him a fifth-place finish in the 2002 Heisman voting, despite completing just over 50 percent of the passes that he threw, even with nothing but NFL receivers around him.

Steelers quarterback BEN ROETHLISBERGER plowed a new frontier in rookie passing production, winning all 13 of his regular-season starts. The No. 11 overall pick in 2004 set a new high in rookie passer rating (98.1), surpassing the 96.0 mark set by DAN MARINO in 1983. ELI MANNING of the Giants finished his first NFL season strong, passing for five TDs against three interceptions in his last three starts, posting a passer rating above 100.0 in two of the three games. Detroit’s KEVIN JONES set the standard for rookie running backs, rushing for 1,133 yards, averaging 4.7 yards per carry with five touchdowns. Tampa Bay wide receiver MICHAEL CLAYTON was an offensive threat, posting a rookie-best 80 receptions and 1,193 yards, while Buffalo wideout LEE EVANS led rookies with nine touchdowns.
