Category: OPERATIONS Approved: Chief Howard Rice, Jr. 03/18/2008 SOG O-16 Last Updated: Chief Howard Rice, Jr. 11/16/2016 Falmouth Fire-EMS Operating Guideline Aerial Company Operations Objective: Establishes procedures by which Falmouth Fire-EMS Department will perform Ladder and/or Tower Company operations, and is intended to ensure optimum performance in such operations and maintain the integrity of safety for personnel. General Information: NOTE: These procedures WILL NOT apply in those cases where a predetermined setup has been designed, or in those instances where company officers determine they must act independently from them because of circumstances unique to the situation. Guidelines: A. 1st Arriving Aerial Company - Positioning 1. SMALL RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL STRUCTURES - The 1st arriving aerial company will position itself so as to not block access to the building but to afford it strategic operative advantage for the removal of ground ladders, tools, and equipment. Such positioning should also take into account the use of the aerial for roof access, if necessary. Truck positioning should NOT impede the attack area of the engine company. B. Large Residential, Apartments, and Commercial Structures 1. The 1st arriving aerial company will position itself in such a manner so as to support the attack through forcible entry, ventilation strategy, and laddering. 2. Such positioning should assume that the aerial would be used for roof access. Again, such positioning should not impede the attack area of the engine company. C. Water Tower Positioning 1. In cases where the aerial is to be positioned for use as a water tower, the truck should be located ahead of the fire travel (unburned portion of building). -

Position No: Pay Range: Date: December 26, 2001 POSITION DESCRIPTION CITY OF CONCORDIA POSITION TITLE: Reserve Firefighter POSITION REPORTS TO: Reserve Lead Firefighter, Reserve Captain, Fulltime Firefighter, Fulltime Lead Firefighter, Captain, Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Chief. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Under supervision, the Reserve Firefighter performs specialized work in the prevention and suppression of fires, as well as operating and maintaining fire department equipment and apparatus. JOB FUNCTIONS Essential Functions 1. Respond to fire alarms. 2. Make forcible entry into buildings when necessary. 3. Combat fires. 4. Operate a variety of hand tools and equipment including power saws, hydraulic equipment, generators, fans, ladders etc. 5. Maintain and clean fire station, vehicles and equipment. 6. Drives and operates fire department vehicles and equipment. 7. Assist in inspections, prevention, and public education activities. 8. Attend drills and classes for firefighters. 9. Promote a professional image to co-workers and the public. 10. Required to work twelve voluntary hours a month with on shift crew. Other Functions 1. Perform other duties as deemed necessary or as required. NOTE: Physical examination and drug screening tests will follow all conditional offers of employment. PORTABLE SAWMILL - OUR GUIDE TO AN ECONOMIC AND PRACTICAL APPROACH TO FOREST UTILIZATION By L.S.T. (Stan) Griffiths1 Abstract For many years the coconut palm has been to many the tree of life. Not only has it provided food and drink, but, shelter and heat. It is therefore understandable the reasons why there is some reluctance to destroy this commodity that, has served them so well, howev'er senile and unproductive. In this modern world with its rapidly diminishing lumber supplies due to indiscriminate logging, overcutting, slash and burn cultivation and the creeping sprawl of cities into rural areas where trees make way for roads and progress, it is little wonder that conservationists have taken up the cause to halt or control further diminishing of native forests. The shortage that has been created of millable timber has increased costs for building materials so alternatives have to be sought. Throughout tropical territories, an abundance of timber is available in the form of the coconut palm, that has many properties that can fill many of our lumber needs. Being a relatively new product compared with traditional timbers, new methods have to be discovered to process, market and use cocowood to its best advantage. I have attempted to put together a comprehensive paper outlining basic machinery to process coconut palm, from the standing tree to a finished product suitable for everyday needs. Cocowood Felling and Processing The felling of coconut palm stems is sometimes very difficult, as many plantations have young or producing trees in the immediate vicinity requiring care to be taken not to damage them. -

To strengthen efforts to conserve and sustainably manage trees and forests worldwide, the United Nations has declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests. Their declaration provides an excellent platform to increase awareness of the connections between healthy forests, ecosystems, people, and economies and provides us all with an opportunity to become more aware, more inspired, and more committed to act. Today, more than 8,000 tree species—about 10 percent of the world’s total—are threatened with extinction, mostly driven by habitat destruction or overharvesting. Global climate change will certainly cause this number to increase significantly in the years to come. Here at the Garden, we care for many individual at-risk trees (representing 48 species) within our diverse, global collection. Many of these species come from areas of the world where the Garden is working to restore forest ecosystems and the trees in them. Overall, we have nearly 6,000 individual trees in our main Garden, some dating from the time of founder Henry Shaw. Thousands more trees thrive at nearby Shaw Nature Reserve, as part of the Garden’s commitment to native habitat preservation, conservation, and restoration. Regardless of where endangered trees are found—close to home or around the world—their survival requires action by all of us. The Great St. Louis Tree Hunt of 2011 is one such action, encouraging as many people as possible to get out and get connected with the spectacular trees of our region. -

DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES POSTION DESCRIPTION - SAMPLE Classification: Forester-Senior Working Title: Forester POSITION SUMMARY: Within the assigned area, this position is responsible for fire management, which includes fire preparedness, fire suppression, and fire prevention on federal, state, county and private lands within the assigned area. This position implements and develops the fire suppression, prevention, and forestry law enforcement in the assigned fire response unit and ensures the completion of all fire management activities. This position includes fire line responsibilities such as initial attack, suppression and serves as the Incident Commander, Operations Section Chief, or as a Division Group Supervisor/Task Force/Strike Team Leader during fire suppression operations. This position also provides expert training to Fire Department personnel and other partners. This position is responsible for planning and conducting prescribed burning activities to achieve habitat and property management objectives. This position directs and provides forest management assistance on private lands, state lands and county forests, to include advice and services to private landowners and property managers; advice and services on state-owned lands; advice and services as the single point of contact or liaison to the assigned County Forest; advice and services on County Forest lands; and advice, services and administration of the Good Neighbor Authority agreement with the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. This position is key to public safety and security and requires the incumbent to meet and maintain the physical fitness test standards required for all Department protective positions. The principal duties of the position require active fire suppression duties which require frequent exposure to a high degree of danger or peril and also require a high degree of physical conditioning.
