Adamopoulou (University of Athens, Department of Geology, Panepisimioupoli Zografou, 157 84, Athens, Greece) Introduction The Grevena - Kozani area was considered up to now as one of the most seismically inactive ar- eas in Greece (Papazachos 1990, Papazachos et al 1995). On May 13, 1995, an earthquake of Ms=6.6 occurred, which caused many damages in a part of Kozani city and in some villages lo- cated between the cities of Grevena and Kozani (Carydis et al 1995, Lekkas et al 1995). The damage has been limited to relatively small area in the form of a triangle extending between the Serbia fault zone to the south, and the Chromion - Varis fault zone to the north (Fig. 1). The western limit was the Aliakmon river. The severe damage is mainly located at the villages lying at the foot of Mt. Vourinos, and some others, as Rymnio and Chromio. However, there still is an “eclectic” distribution, with two groups of highly damaged villages, one at the north (Knidi, Varis, Chromio) and the other at the south (Paleohori, Sarakina, Kentro, Messolakos, Kalamitsi and Ka- lohi). The recent earthquake have also caused a series of concominant geodynamic phenomena, the most frequent of which was the occurrence of numerous, but subsidiary, ground fissures at the vil- lages of Knidi, Sarakina, Paleohori, Chromio, Agapi and elsewhere. -

All of them consist from their base upwards of serpentinized harzburgite slivers with lat- eritic unconformities on the top, followed by transgressive upper Lower Cretaceous neritic limestones. At Kteni locality (Rhodiani area), a laterite horizon, lying on top of serpentinites, is covered by transgressive neritic limestones with Salpingoporella urladanasi, assign ing a Barremian - Albian age, followed by Orbitolinidae limestones. At Tsimodia lo cality (NNW to the previous), the latente horizon, lying on karstified Upper Jurassic reef limestones (which are the top member of a carbonate platform body tectonically lying on the ophiolites), is trans gres s ively overlain by iron-rich pisolith levels and Aptian limestones of the wackes tone-muds tone type, also containing Salpingoporella urladanasi, followed by Cenomanian Orbitolina limestones. -

The majority of sites relate to interpretation of the west Pelagonian margin as parts of a classic gneiss dome, and the relation of this complex with the Mesohellenic ophiolites (in this case, Vourinos). The fieldtrip route also passes world-class sites in other disciplines such as sedimentation and active tectonics that should not be missed: these impressive sites lack comprehensive study, and they, too, need new interpretative analyses. Thus, the approach of this fieldtrip is to introduce “cutting edge” interpretation into the regional geologic studies of the area. These interpretations update the classic geo-tectonic framework into the more recent exhumation paradigm, and, we hope, further refine a model of the complex geology of Greece. None of these interpretations are “etched in stone” as yet, and we expect that some of our opinions may change during the course of this fieldtrip. We will be extremely disappointed if we fail to learn anything from the participants. To formulate and document a new model for the region will take many years of study. -

The objective of the project is to support the Commission of the European Communities, the Member States and other EU organisations in their efforts to prevent and prepare for natural and environmental disasters and to manage their consequences. A main NEDIES activity is to produce "lessons learnt" reports based on experience gained from past disasters. This report discusses lessons learnt from earthquake disasters that occurred in Greece. The Congress will be hosted in Thessaloniki, from Thursday 15th to Saturday 17th April 2004 in the premises of the University of Macedonia. It s co-organized by the School of Geology of the Faculty of Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME)-Regional Unit of Central Macedonia and the Geotechnical Chamber of Greece (GEOTEE). Dianthus haematocalyx subsp. phitosianus (Ca- ryophyllaceae), a new serpentine endemic from Greece. - Phyton (Horn, Austria) 39 (2): 277-291, 4 figures. - English with German summary. Dianthus haematocalyx Boiss. & HELDR. subsp. phitosianus CONSTANTINIDIS, a new subspecies from Greece, is described and illustrated. It differs from all the re- lated taxa of D. haematocalyx in its decumbent habit, the lanceolate to ovate cauline leaves, and the triangular awns of epicalyx scales. Its chromosome number of 2n = 30 is reported. The new taxon appears to be a narrow serpentine endemic, growing on dry slopes sparsely covered with vegetation, or on gravel and scree close to Aliki settlement and NE Loutraki (Sterea Ellas). It occupies the southernmost known dis- tribution range of any of its allied taxa. With respect to their distribution and geo- lithological preferences, the plant taxa that occur on serpentine in central Greece may be classified into four main categories. -

THE USE OF DISAGGREGATED DATA IN THE COMPREHENSION OF THE SUB-REGIONAL DIVERSITY ♦ AND THE FORMULATION OF POLICY IN GREECE By Pródromos-Ioánnis K. Prodromídis Centre for Planning and Economic Research [KEPE] Abstract The paper analyses the spatial distribution of male and female employment, unemployment and non-participation population shares recorded in the 2001 Census across the country’s 1034 municipalities. It estimates the impact of demographic composition, formal qualifications, population density, sector concentration, and develops a procedure for the detection of likely distressed areas through the spatial patterns of the residuals (thus capturing the spatial dimension of omitted variables). The construction of dummy variables standing for such localities or clusters of localities allows the juxtaposition of a model that is based on micro-regional and distinct community characteristics to specifications that are based on the official division of the country, i.e., the 13 administrative regions and the 54 prefectures. On the basis of the findings the paper makes a number of spatial and non-spatial policy proposals. Overall, a better understanding of the internal heterogeneity of the country’s regions and sub-regions, and the factors driving economic activity, permits the designation of better targeted policy interventions.
