Music 136: Intermediate Guitar Location: Room E 129 1:30 to 2:20 pm Tuesdays & Thursdays Instructor: Mark H Wilson Contact: [email protected] or www.mhilliardwilson.com Office hours: by appointment only Class materials: Will be posted at the website or will be dictated through lecture Course Description: This course is oriented towards guitarists who are interested in developing their ability to read better, understand the geography of harmony through the study of the circle of fifths and explore various other styles of music from around the world. There is an emphasis on ensemble playing in an effort to address rhythm and the need to listen carefully to the people you make music with. Our journey through the keys will encounter the music of Jimi Hendrix, Asia, Africa Flamenco, Jazz and American roots music. I. First week A. The Blues E minor pentatonic and I IV V “what do you have to say” Less is more approach Riffs and runs B. Arpeggios and the e minor scale Introduction to classical technique (fingerpickin') 5 studies for the right hand 3 rules for your left hand II. Second Week A. Handout of e minor scale Review of reading music Begin ensemble work out by playing an e minor cannon Emphasis on rhythm and listening and review of hand posture B. Five basic Chords Circle of fifths and the geography of harmony E major and its contrast with e minor – a definition of major and minor “Hey Joe” written by Billy Roberts but we'll learn the version done by Jimi Hendrix III. Third Week A. Review of Circle of fifths Review of Major and Minor Scales Details of Hendrix's “Hey Joe” B. Introduction to “Balafon” an African piece read a piece in first position and put together three parts IV. Fourth week A. Review e minor scale and arpeggios Major scales and I IV V work on “Balafon” concerning dynamics B. Detail the scale degrees of major and minor learn the minor scale in 5 different keys learn the major scale in 5 different keys V. Fifth week A. Review current repertoire Blues Balafon Hey Joe B. Holiday VI. Sixth week A. Review of music theory Circle of fifths One sharp to 5 Major scales in 5 keys Five basic chords and I IV V from each of them B. QUIZ VII. Seventh week A. The 7 modes Half step motion in chords the Phrygian mode Malaguena B. establishing grooves and applying modal scales counts in Flamenco music and it's cousins in Central Europe review of the modes and intro to the Rasgueado (flamenco strum) VIII. Latin America the Cueca 6/8 and 3/4 B. the Rasgueado “mute” rehearse Cueca X. Tenth week A. Rehearse our entire program Blues Balafon Malaguena Hey Joe Cueca Hora and “Papa's 'Okolehau” XII. Final week A. Perform a program of with beginning Class Guitar. 1. Blue Flower from Asia Perform alone Malaguena from Spain Hey Joe from the US Hora from Croatia Cueca from Bolivia The final for this class will be a performance of all of the music we have learned. You will have to invite at least one person to see you perform. There will be a CD or video made of the performance that will be made available for you at the end of the quarter. Grades: Grades will be determined on a point system which is weighted in the following manner: 1. Attendance and participation 20% 2. Pop Quizzes that require you to talk about music theory and demonstrate your knowledge on the guitar. 40% 3. Demonstrate proficiency of course material in a performance at the end of the quarter. 40%.
