Heliworx helicopter pilot Alister Boyd of Te Pahu spotted the development as he was driving back to Te Awamutu on Thursday. “I had been spraying apple trees on a Karapiro property and was driving back to Te Awamutu along the swamp road, when I looked across to Mt Pirongia. “Just after 2.30 I spotted the spout starting to form from a long rain cloud. “From where I was it looked like it was over Pirongia village. I watched it for 10-15 minutes, wondering if it would reach the ground, but it eventually trailled away.” Mr Boyd had a digital camera with him at the time, so took several shots of the spout forming. Yvonne Weal was equally ecstatic with the per- formance of Draytown Trooper. “It’s the ‘icing on the cake’ to what has been a wonderful fi rst season competing for Trooper. “All going well, we’ll give him another season here in New Zealand, then possibly take him to Australia early 2007 for some combined drives and championship events.” Yvonne and Lloyd Weal were among the fi rst at Taupo, arriving early in the week to enable Lloyd to help Australian Peter Harkness to build the marathon course. The nationals commenced on the Friday, with a special standing presentation class event, won by Yvonne and Draytown Trooper. Their dream fi rst day was capped by winning both the horse class dressage and dressage cup as overall winner of the dressage. The last time these two teams met, University Reserves romped in 50-32 with their very physical game. Cogs 1 were determined to put up a much better fi ght in the fi nal and did so. They were still in contention at 10-13, 21-25 and 32-36 after the fi rst three breaks. “It feels like we’ve won in a way,” said Stephanie Clark. “We improved heaps and are happy with the way we handled the physical nature of the opposition.” Tigers roar home Pirongia Meateaters will be smarting after let- ting a three goal lead slip to a three goal loss to Kawau Tigers in premier netball. Dianne Cox reports there was an air of confi - dence about the Pirongia team going to the fi rst quarter break with their noses in front at the Trust Waikato Te Awamutu Events Centre. However, the second quarter was to prove their undoing. Kawau Tigers took the initiate, turning a three goal defi cit into a three goal lead by halftime. Slick passing by the mid-courters and relentless pressure on the shooters saw Kawau Tigers main- tain their lead through the second half. They ran out the winners 40-37 after being ahead 32-29 at three-quarter time. Bronwyn Findsen is back in Pirongia colours after a stint with Cog Presidents last year. She led her young team by example with a fi ne shooting display at GS, along with teenager Emma Verstappen at GA. Verstappen, in her debut season at premier level, looks to be handling the pressure like a seasoned campaigner. The absence this season of GK Cindy Treanor and player coach Paula Wankore (presently side lined) has not seemed to faze them. Tash Ford has switched allegiance from Bailey Ingham Wanderers to Pirongia this season and slotted into the centre position with ease. In other games, College Open A had an ideal lead up to the Regional League fi nals on Saturday, thrashing Bailey Ingham Wanderers 55-23. Marist Weka proved too strong for the eighth seeds Cogs Menz, winning 61-34. Cogs 1 also showed a clean pair of heals to TAS Ecolab, leading right from the outset to win 62-48.
