What Brown does for FGCU Researchers probe how babies learn to communicate Program helps freshmen adjust to college life President’s Message nt E m A vision of great things to come E Ed Cl n my inaugural address, I asked you to walk with me. Today I ask you not just to walk, but to leap ahead five years. Here’s what I envision for Florida Gulf Coast University in 2014: I Student body: We will have 15,000 students, with some 4,000 living on campus. We will have seen 15,000 graduates go on to make professional and personal contributions in our community and beyond. Faculty and staff: A growing number of talented faculty and staff members will continue to inspire and support students. Educational opportunities: I envision more doctoral programs – in nursing practice, educational leadership and possibly marine science. We’ll expand master’s programs to include environmental studies, engineering, mathematics, music education, biology, psychology and sports psychology. New undergraduate degrees will include advertising management, economics, environmental humanities, graphic design, journalism, music therapy, real estate and software engineering. Another possibility is a school of architecture, where future architects will learn about sustainable practices. Community support: A school of architecture and many other enhancements will require the level of private support that made possible the music, business, engi- neering and resort and hospitality management programs. In 2014, we will continue to expand opportunities for philanthropy to make FGCU better positioned to accomplish its mission. The campus: I see a physical facility that supports and enhances students’ educational experiences, attending to their physical well-being along with their intellectual growth.

  • 10,000Th Student Graduates
10,000th student graduates Music students share talents with children Get the 411 on climate change President’s Message NT E M FGCU stays course in turbulent E budget times ED CL lorida Gulf Coast University remains a healthy and growing institution as we prepare to start our 13th academic year. Although the Florida Legislature reduced funding for state universities for Fthe third time in less than three years, FGCU fared better than early projections. It was an extremely challenging year for legislators and the Governor given the state’s unprecedented decline in revenue collections due to the economic crisis. FGCU felt the impact – deeply. The legislature reduced funds for our operating budget by $7.3 million, a 15.8 percent cut from last year. Infrastructure was funded at $5.2 million, rather than the $7 million we’d requested, and a $12-million request for a new health sciences building was funded at $3 million. Federal stimulus money totaling $3.5 million and a 15 percent tuition increase, which will generate another $4 million, will help offset the cuts somewhat, but it does not make us whole and we face the prospect of still more cuts during the 2009-2010 year. Where does that leave us? Let me start by saying that we are not in crisis here. We are managing this budget in a way that will continue to allow us to grow in a quality manner. The impact of budget cuts over the past 2½ years has slowed our growth, causing us to delay introducing some new academic programs, but it hasn’t stopped it.
