“TREES OF LIFE” TransPLANTing Respect for the Environment and Enhancement of Sight Lions Clubs Past International President Tam’s goal during his term was to plant a million trees to help the environment. PID Del Brown collaborated with the Eye Bank and they developed the program called “TREES OF LIFE.” The Eye Bank offers all donor families the opportunity to be contacted by their local Lions club and discuss planting a tree in honor of their loved one. The Eye Bank sends all donor families information about participating in the Eye Bank Family Service Programs, such as the Quilt of Memories and the Remembrance Album. Once a local club is notified that they have an interested donor family in their area, they will be able to work out the particulars with the family. Their loved one may have had a favorite tree and the club could purchase the tree and then plant it in an appropriate place either in a park, their yard, or a special place of the donor. The details of what, how, when and where are up to the club and the family. Your club might want to have a ceremony honoring the donor and also get publicity for your club and the good things that your club is doing for people who give the gift of sight.

Local Lions clubs and the City of Crescent dedicate a Quaking Aspen to honor the memory of Allison Lynn Winther, an Iowa Lions Eye Bank donor. Past District Governor Jerry Farley from Neola Lions Club is pictured reading the dedication.

May 2016...THE IOWA LION...Page 23 IPIP JOE PRESTON responds to one of the interview questions posed by “Dinner With Joe” chairman PDG Gary Glockhoff in the “Fireside Chat” highlight of the evening. Iowa Lions Dine With Joe Iowa Lions had the opportunity to get face to face with Immediate Past International President (IPIP) Joe Preston recently. In his current position as Chair of Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), Joe was the guest of honor at an LCIF fundraiser held in Mitchellville on April 26. THE IOWA LION While in Iowa, Joe visited the Iowa Lions Eye Bank, the Iowa KidSight office, and the Iowa Cochlear Implant Center. Before heading back home to Arizona, Joe will be visiting his boyhood hometown of Spencer. Prior to the “Dinner with Joe” event, the Altoona Lions hosted an informal reception for Joe on April 25. Lions from Altoona, Bondurant, East Des Moines and Mitchellville were treated to an evening they won’t soon forget. An enjoyable duty for Joe that evening was the induction of two new Lions into the Bondurant club. Joe took the ceremony as an opportunity to describe the joy and pride he receives in being a Lion. The focus of the “Dinner with Joe” event was LCIF. Gary Fry emphasized that LCIF is a two way street and that Iowa has actually received more funding from LCIF than it has contributed. He gave examples of three $50,000 LCIF grants that helped Columbus Junction, Oakville and Palo restore their community centers following natural disasters in 2008. Iowa KidSight Coordinator, Lori Short, related how a major grant from LCIF had been critical in getting KidSight off the ground. Since that time, Iowa Lions have screened 406,000 children with 22,874 of them being referred to vision professionals. The highlight of the evening was a “Fireside Chat” between Joe and MD9 LCIF Chair, Gary Glockhoff. Seated in recliners, Gary used the chat to help the audience get to know Joe Preston, the person. Joe told how he was invited to lunch by a friend – that lunch turned out to be a Lions Club meeting and Joe was hooked. He became a “real Lion” when he provided transportation for blind young adults and saw the service Lions were providing to the visually challenged. One of the disconcerting things that came out of the conversation was the risk encountered by LCI officers as they travel. According to Joe, being escorted by armed soldiers in a military convoy didn’t make him feel any safer. Joe ended the evening by presenting Melvin Jones Fellowships to Jim Bixler, Ken Klemish, Bill Shutters and Judy Hankom. Gary Glockhoff summed up the feelings of everyone in attendance with the old saying “You can take the boy out of Iowa, but you can’t take the Iowa out of the boy.”

IPIP Joe Preston, in cen- ter, poses with four Lions who had the privilege of being presented LCIF’’s highest honor by him. From left, Ken Klemish (who received his first Melvin Jones Fellowship) and Judy Hankom, Bill Shutters and Jim Bixler, each of whom received progressive MJF jewels.
