Doshi en su estudio: Sangath (Ahmedabad, India) 4 CAPÍTULO 1 |INTRODUCCIÓN| ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1 / INTRODUCCIÓN El movimiento moderno en la arquitectura es un conjunto de tendencias desarrolladas a partir de dos detonantes. En primer lugar, la revolución de la industria durante gran parte del siglo XIX origina la aparición de nuevos materiales, como el acero laminado, el hormigón o el vidrio de grandes dimensiones, y de nuevas técnicas constructivas. Esto da lugar a que el edificio se conciba como un objeto industrial más, pues, al igual que en el caso de las máquinas, la arquitectura se pensaba que también podría adaptarse a la seriación, la prefabricación y la repetición1. Por otro lado, el movimiento cultural desarrollado por las vanguardias europeas a principios del siglo XX da lugar al replanteamiento de conceptos de carácter plenamente arquitectónico como el espacio, las formas o la luz. Así surgen arquitecturas relacionadas con movimientos como el expresionismo, el constructivismo ruso o el De Stijl holandés. Estas dos vertientes confluyeron en la obra de una de las figuras clave de la arquitectura del siglo XX: Charles Édouard Jeanneret-Gris (1887 - 1965), más conocido como Le Corbusier. Su fascinación por las máquinas y sus planteamientos artísticos cercanos al cubismo provocan una revolución a través de la arquitectura racionalista, en una disciplina que históricamente siempre ha sido tardía respecto de las demás artes. Si bien el movimiento moderno tiene su germen en Europa, donde se desarrolla desde la década de 1920, posteriormente se expande principalmente hacia Estados Unidos y Sudamérica. Sin embargo, estas nuevas corrientes acaban llegando a Oriente, hacia el Sureste asiático, a países todavía en un régimen colonial bien entrado el siglo XX. La figura de B.V.Doshi será una de las más importantes en este trasvase cultural, abriendo las nuevas vías que ofrece la modernidad europea hacia esa nueva generación de profesionales,
