1 Demanding the Angels' Share: Intellectual Property and Spiritual
1 Demanding the Angels’ Share: Intellectual Property and Spiritual Organization in the Urantia Foundation Andrew Ventimiglia PhD Candidate, Cultural Studies Graduate Group University of California – Davis Email: [email protected] / Tel: 347-247-5830 2 Demanding the Angels’ Share: Intellectual Property and Spiritual Organization in the Urantia Foundation Abstract: This article explores the role that intellectual property plays as it shapes the circulation and use of ‘The Urantia Book,’ a divinely revealed text published in 1955 and embraced by a community of believers. For many modern spiritual communities – of which the Urantian community is a telling example – their coherence no longer lies in a centralized institution like the church but instead in a shared dedication to sacred texts and other religious media. Thus, intellectual property has become an effective means to administer the ephemeral beliefs and practices mediated by these texts. This article explores a number of the Urantia Foundation’s cases to demonstrate how intellectual property law can be used to maintain and adjudicate social relations rather than simply determining the proper allocation of ownership over a contested good. This project uses the legal battles of the Urantia Foundation as an opportunity to examine how religious communities ethically justify forms of ownership in religious goods and to highlight the incongruities between theories of authorship, originality and ownership within spiritual communities and those embedded in the law. Further, by focusing on intellectual property in the religious world, I seek to answer the question: does religion belong to the public domain? Interview with John Horton Conway
Interview with John Horton Conway Dierk Schleicher his is an edited version of an interview with John Horton Conway conducted in July 2011 at the first International Math- ematical Summer School for Students at Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany, Tand slightly extended afterwards. The interviewer, Dierk Schleicher, professor of mathematics at Jacobs University, served on the organizing com- mittee and the scientific committee for the summer school. The second summer school took place in August 2012 at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, France, and the next one is planned for July 2013, again at Jacobs University. Supriem Rockefeller – Messiah or AntiChrist? - by Wes Penre, 2009 - Published for Public View on June 16, 2009 His full name is Supriem David Rockefeller, a 34 year old man who says he is Lucifer redeemed, the Messiah the world has been waiting for and the Bible has been telling us about. This is the man secret societies have been waiting for and prepared for since ancient times. He says he is the one who rebelled against God, The Universal Father, and caused the Wars in Heaven. He is the one who created ‘sin’ and is the reason the world is in the shape it’s in. According to himself, after thousands of years in exile, he has now returned in the body of Supriem Rockefeller, but has redeemed himself. Instead of bringing the world to its knees and fulfill the End Time Prophecies, he has decided to save the world he once had the purpose to destroy. Upon all this, he is also the Jewish Messiah. When he visits Israel, he is treated like a God. Is he telling the truth? Hopefully this e-book will bring some understand to who he really is… © 2009 Wes Penre. -

THE PLAN for the URANTIA BOOK REVELATION by Carolyn B
THE PLAN FOR THE URANTIA BOOK REVELATION By Carolyn B. Kendall INTRODUCTION WE ARE TOLD IN The URANTIA Book that revelators came to earth on missions and for specific purposes. There was an ordained plan for how each bestowal son would carry out his program of up stepping evolutionary life and imparting new spiritual truth. There was a master plan for The URANTIA Book and I believe it is still in operation. Its features were specific. They guided the content, the quality, the publishing, and the protection of the Fifth Epochal Revelation. It decreed the establishment and the function of Urantia Foundation and Urantia Brotherhood. The highest planetary authority approved the constitution of Urantia Brotherhood. The relationship between the Foundation and the Brotherhood was prescribed. This feature of the plan is where I believe the guidance was not followed, and where subsequent problems arose to bedevil both Foundation and Brotherhood. The plan was conveyed by the revelatory providers to the contact commissioners, who shared it with the groups known as the Seventy and the Forum. The commissioners had latitude to share elements of the plan with later arriving persons perceived to have leadership potential. The original messages, which outlined the plan, were not published as part of the revelation and would eventually be destroyed. The former Forum members who became Brotherhood leaders and Foundation trustees carried on knowledge of how the revelation was to progress. However, because of the recent schism, discontinuity occurred in the transmittal of information. The plan was never presented as a 1-2-3 listing of do’s and don’ts. -
Fundamental Concepts in the Philosophy of the Universe As
Fundamental concepts in the philosophy of the universe as gleaned from The Urantia Book. The following relationships between matter and spirit are brought to light by epochal revelation and are intended to encourage unity in the intelligent comprehension of the universe. In our lifetime we have seen and experienced increased capacity to cooperate with one another on the basis of united ideals. A bolder step is now required: As leaders of the fifth epochal revelation, we are called upon to foster a united philosophy of the universe. Our efforts one person at a time will be the first steps towards breaking through the philosophic chaos and spiritual stagnation that we witness almost daily in our community and the world. Unity of spirit is reflected in united leadership, and united leadership inspires those who follow to elevate their religion. Common ground from which to lead: Below are insights gleaned from The Urantia Book which are fundamental if we are to move in the direction of a united philosophy. Read each of these concepts with an open mind. Be aware of your thoughts and feelings as you read them. How does each concept fit into your philosophy of the world? Explore how it relates to your experience and understanding of God and your spiritual journey. Try moving from merely recognizing the concept to appreciating it at the deepest level of your being. Explore any feelings of resistance as you read a concept. Are you inclined to skip or reject it? Does it challenge a long-held belief? If so, ask yourself, why. -
The Fantastic Combinations of John Conway's New Solitaire Game "Life" - M
Mathematical Games - The fantastic combinations of John Conway's new solitaire game "life" - M. Gardner - 1970 Suche Home Einstellungen Anmelden Hilfe MATHEMATICAL GAMES The fantastic combinations of John Conway's new solitaire game "life" by Martin Gardner Scientific American 223 (October 1970): 120-123. Most of the work of John Horton Conway, a mathematician at Gonville and Caius College of the University of Cambridge, has been in pure mathematics. For instance, in 1967 he discovered a new group-- some call it "Conway's constellation"--that includes all but two of the then known sporadic groups. (They are called "sporadic" because they fail to fit any classification scheme.) Is is a breakthrough that has had exciting repercussions in both group theory and number theory. It ties in closely with an earlier discovery by John Conway of an extremely dense packing of unit spheres in a space of 24 dimensions where each sphere touches 196,560 others. As Conway has remarked, "There is a lot of room up there." In addition to such serious work Conway also enjoys recreational mathematics. Although he is highly productive in this field, he seldom publishes his discoveries. One exception was his paper on "Mrs. Perkin's Quilt," a dissection problem discussed in "Mathematical Games" for September, 1966. My topic for July, 1967, was sprouts, a topological pencil-and-paper game invented by Conway and M. S. Paterson. Conway has been mentioned here several other times. This month we consider Conway's latest brainchild, a fantastic solitaire pastime he calls "life". Because of its analogies with the rise, fall and alternations of a society of living organisms, it belongs to a growing class of what are called "simulation games"--games that resemble real-life processes. -
