It is located in the middle of the mighty river Brahmaputra flowing through the city of Guwahati. There are regular ferry services to the Umananda which are ran by the State Inland Water Transport department. These ferries are available on the river bank of the Guwahati city. The Britishers named this island as peacock island for its shape. The name of the Umananda island is named after the name of the Hindu goddess Parvati, the wife of lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, Shiva created the island for his wife’s happiness and pleasure. There is a famous Shiva temple located in this island for which the island is mostly known to the people. The temple was built by the Ahom king Gadadhar Singha during 1681 to 1696. This island is also known as Bhasmachal as it is told that lord Shiva burnt Kamdev here with his third eye when Kamdev tried to interrupt Shiva’s deep meditation. A group of golden langurs are always found in Umananda . Umananda is a place of worship as well as a tourist spot in Kamrup metro district.
