The Great Ocean Road: from Where to Where?
The Great Ocean Road: from where to where? © Rachel Faggetter In the genre of ‘scenic routes’ the Great Ocean Road on Victoria’s southwest coast is one of the best in the world. It has compelling beauty and drama, a high-energy coastline and it winds through a region of rich natural and cultural significance. Serious consideration should be given to proposing the Great Ocean Road for inscription on the World Heritage List as a cultural landscape of international importance. Among the 690 sites on the List, 14 are Australian, none of them in Victoria. Yet this paper suggests a paradox. In the context of contemporary values about conservation and sustainability, the Great Ocean Road would probably not be built. Mention of the Great Ocean Road stirs the imagination of many Australians. Spectacular landscapes and wild seas: shipwrecks, drama and tragedy; bushfires and landslides; summer holidays and winter bushwalking; sand, surf and swimming. Drivers think of the concentrated negotiation of narrow roads and passengers remember looking down at the waves and rocks waiting at the bottom of steep cliffs. Scenic lookouts abound. Scenic is an appropriate word, for this is a constructed landscape, a deliberate arrangement designed to enhance the drama and impact of the coastline as seen through the windscreen of a motor vehicle. The traditional custodians of this country are the Wauthurong, the people who harboured escapee William Buckley for 32 years from 1803. They camped in the creek valleys to harvest the rich seafood but made their tracks and trading routes along ridges and up into the hills. -

THE croaker Correspondence to: the Editors via email: [email protected] Volume 7 No. 4 August 2014 Editors Deb Campbell & Jane Gorman Telstra is coming to the Marsh: Meeting Wednesday August 20th at 5.00pm—7.00pm ADSL & 4G For Deans Marsh: Deans Marsh and district is embarking on a quest to work with Telstra to help us upgrade all our communica- tions systems so that they do actually communicate. We have already collected a list of 50 interested com- munity members to show we are serious. Now we need to assemble and ask questions and put our case. When I first moved to the Marsh from Lorne, I was told by Customer Service in rather triumphal tones ‘Deans Marsh doesn’t have ADSL and it never will’. But it appears this is not necessarily the case. Our neighbours in Lorne and Birregurra campaigned for ADSL and succeeded: now it is our turn. Deans Marsh is right in the middle of one of Victoria’s most fire-prone areas. We have increasing numbers of visitors travelling through whose phones and sat navs do not work here. We also have residents whose mo- biles do not work in their own homes, let alone anywhere outside. We also have expensive and inadequate internet. We are hoping to work with Telstra to make real changes; the first step is a demonstration of support from us all. Anyone who is around 5kms from the Deans Marsh exchange should be able to get ADSL, and a 4G tower would help everyone, including visitors and travellers. -

Tom Ryan and John McGuckin Report prepared for Corangamite Catchment Management Authority August 2007 Drought impact on fish communities and river health in the Corangamite Region Executive Summary This study provides a rapid assessment of river condition and aims to determine the key issues affecting aquatic health including the relative impact of drought. It is designed to help prioritise potential management actions in the drought response plan. Pre-existing catchment issues, such as water extraction, extensive land clearing and lack of riparian vegetation can directly affect river health and compounds impacts caused directly by drought. Where catchments have been degraded by past management practices, the severity of the drought upon stream health has been the most extreme. Waters examined in this study have been classified into 3 distinct classes of river health, streams with minor stress, streams with moderate stress and streams that have severe stress. Waterways with minor drought stress had lower streamflows than normal as a result of the drought but were in no immediate threat of becoming severely stressed by the drought. Waters classified as having moderate stress are ones in which the existing aquatic fauna is expected to be experiencing some stress, however, the stress is unlikely to have caused the loss of species. Streamflow may have ceased in freshwater reaches and water deterioration may have occurred in remaining refuge habitat, however, the duration of the stress upon aquatic fauna has only been for a relatively short period.
