This is an exciting time for our students moving schools and we want to ensure that the transfer into the College is both a smooth and stimulating experience for every individual. Together, the College and parents share a common commitment and responsibility to support each child’s individual progress through the College, providing them with opportunities and support for their personal development and academic achievement. The most important part of this transition process is developing the relationship between the tutor, student and parent, as well as integrating new students into their new tutor group and teaching group. For Year 6, this is the focus of both the Open Evening on 27th September and the transition plan during year 6. This booklet should provide you with important summary information of what your child can look forward to experiencing at the College. However, it cannot cover everything so if you have any burning questions, do not hesitate to ask at the Open Evening or at any time by contacting reception or your House office when places are allocated later in the year. Separate student information will be handed out to students during the Year 6 Induction Days in July 2019; which covers information on day to day routines and expectations. I encourage you to have a look at the College website www.swaveseyvc.co.uk. The site is regularly updated and includes news that highlights recent or forthcoming events. At the heart of all of this is an unwavering commitment to fostering strong, positive, honest and respectful relationships throughout our community. 2 Ofsted Inspection 2011 (Summary) The report praised the drive, structures and practices that have underpinned the rapid improvements that have taken place in standards at the school since the last report in 2006. The headlines from the report are: Students reach high standards and make outstanding progress because of the excellent teaching, the exceptional curriculum and the very high standard of care, guidance and support. Every member of staff shows whole-hearted commitment to the school’s aim of meeting the needs of every student. The progress of students within the school is singled out for praise. Students’ personal development is outstanding because of the highly effective tutor system and the excellent impact of the extended curriculum. The quality of teaching has similarly moved from good to outstanding through a programme of professional development to improve teachers’ skills in using assessment to support learning. Being a student at Swavesey ‘makes an outstanding contribution to their employability and future well- being.’ In particular, the Report praises the school’s uncompromising focus upon the achievement of every student - its 100% philosophy: The school’s approach to academic monitoring is exemplary, with a heavy emphasis on inclusion and achievement for all. The breadth of the curriculum means that all students follow programmes that are highly suited to their needs, with bespoke arrangements being made if needed. The mixed-aged tutor groups mean that tutors can focus on the four or five students in each age group at appropriate times of the year. Every student is known as an individual. Every child succeeds and the school has many success stories illustrating its impact on students’ lives. Despite the rapid improvement over the past 5 years, the Inspectors commend the school’s commitment to continuous improvement. There is absolutely no complacency, with even successful practices being invigorated through review and further innovation. The involvement of so many staff and students in the benchmarking of good practice through external visits brings a surge of energy for improvement. ‘Swavesey Village College is an outstanding school in every respect.’ Swavesey Village College joins a very select group of schools nationally

Matters arising a) BT Telephone box The contract has been signed and exchanged. Derek Hill reported it is a K6 model, dating from King George Vth’s reign. Refurbishment is expected to take around 6 weeks. An official opening to coincide with the launch of the “book exchange” club is anticipated. In the meantime, books and suitable magazines can be left with Jo Archer. Darren Chamberlain was thanked for erecting the shelving within the box. b) Village website. The Chairman reported www.lolworth.net should be up in the next few weeks. Volunteers to take responsibility for writing the first content, and possibly taking responsibility for keeping them up to date, were requested to contact Martin & Becky Pointon, preferably with their email addresses.

    A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire: major improvements Construction work on the new A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon scheme is underway. We are currently carrying out a variety of tasks for which we need to close lanes or carriageways on the A1, A14 and some local roads at times, usually overnight between 8pm and 6am, unless otherwise stated. A clearly signed diversion route will always be in place for closures. For this week, the planned closures are: Full closures Monday 15 8am to Saturday 27 7pm • A1307 between Bar Hill /Longstanton junction and Oakington roundabout Vehicles will be diverted via Oakington, Cottenham, Rampton, Willingham and Longstanton. Travel between Swavesey and Bar Hill remains, as does Dry Drayton to Oakington on weekdays only. Please check the weekend closure for some changes. Monday 15 to Friday 19 (five nights) • A1 northbound Brampton Hut exit slip Vehicles will be diverted north to Alconbury to then use A1 southbound and either continue or exit for access to Brampton Hut roundabout • A1 northbound Brampton Hut entry slip Vehicles will be diverted east along A141 and then north at Spittals roundabout to the spur road to re-join the A1 northbound at Alconbury • A141 eastbound link between New Ellington junction 21 and Brampton Hut roundabout Vehicles will be diverted east on the A605 at junction 13 then south on the A1(M) to the A605 to re-join the A14 at junction 21 • A10 northbound from Milton junction 33 and A10 southbound approach to Milton junction 33 Vehicles will be diverted via Butt Lane, Milton Road, Burgoynes Road, Impington Lane and B1049 Bridge Road to access Cambridge or the A14 • A1307 westbound between Cambridge and A14 westbound Girton junction 31 Vehicles will be diverted to join the A14 at Histon junction 32 and travel west.

    SUMMARY OF MAIN PROVISIONS OF DRAFT SCHEME (NOT PART OF THE DRAFT SCHEME) This draft scheme provides for the union of the benefice of Long Stanton Saint Michael and All Saints, the benefice of Over, the benefice of Willingham and the benefice of Swavesey (their constituent parishes to remain distinct) in the diocese of Ely and for the establishment of a team ministry for the new benefice of 5folds. It also provides for the cure of souls in the new benefice to be shared by a team rector and a team vicar, for the appointment of the team rector and team vicar and for the housing arrangements for the team and for the future patronage arrangements for the new benefice. DRAFT PASTORAL SCHEME This Scheme is made by the Church Commissioners this day of 201 in pursuance of the Mission and Pastoral Measure 2011 (“the 2011 Measure”), the Right Reverend Stephen, Bishop of Ely, having consented thereto. Union of benefices 1. The benefice of Long Stanton Saint Michael and All Saints, the benefice of Over, the benefice of Willingham and the benefice of Swavesey in the diocese of Ely shall be united to create a new benefice which shall be named “The Benefice of 5folds”, and the area of the new benefice shall comprise the parish of Saint Michael and All Saints, Long Stanton, the parish of Over, the parish of Willingham and the parish of Swavesey, which parishes shall continue distinct.     MAILMERGE Starting Secondary School A guide for parents of Cambridgeshire children starting secondary school in September 2020 This leaflet explains how to apply for a secondary school place if your child lives in Cambridgeshire and was born between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009. Appl ication deadline 31 October 2019 All the information you need to apply for a secondary school place, including an online application form and electronic copy of our full admissions guide “Next Steps, Admission to Secondary School; a guide for parents”, will be available on our website www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/apply-for-a- school-place/secondary-school/ The benefits of applying online are: • it is quick and easy to do; • the system is secure; • there is no risk that your application will get lost in the post; • you can change / amend the details on your application up until the closing date; • you will receive an email confirmation when your application has been received, and each time it is resubmitted; • it is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week up until the closing date of 31 October 2019 (except during periods of essential maintenance) Alternatively, you may apply using a paper application form . Cambridge LaunchPad is a movement led by science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) organisations, who invest their talent and resources to inspire young people into STEM careers. The programme provides students aged 8 to 17 with experiences and opportunities, and is designed to address the diversity issues which exist in STEM employment. Our industry partners and partner schools are at the heart of the programme. By building bridges between education and employment, we can support and contribute to the growing demand for a skilled workforce in the Greater Cambridge region. If you’re interested in finding out more about all our activities, you can sign up to our newsletter: cambridge-launchpad.com/newsletter. How does the programme work? Cambridge LaunchPad is a 3-tiered scheme designed to excite, educate and encourage students from Year 4 all the way through to the end of Year 12. Over the academic year, each of our industry partners host project days that give the students a chance to gain hands-on experience within a STEM field and build on what they may have learnt in the classroom. During these events, the students are encouraged to develop and improve the Cambridge LaunchPad core skills. These are qualities that they will use throughout their everyday lives, such as communication, teamwork, problem solving and innovation. The students that display these attributes or show improvement throughout the day will be chosen to attend our annual award ceremony to celebrate their personal development. As the Cambridge LaunchPad programme rewards through experiences, these students will also attend an educational prize trip, alongside the winning students from other project days.
