Reading Comprehension/ Animals Name _________________________________ Date ____________________ OWLS An owl is a bird. There are two basic types of owls: typical owls and barn owls. Owls live in almost every country of the world. Owls are mostly nocturnal, meaning they are awake at night. Owls are predators- they hunt the food that they eat. Owls hunt for mice and other small mammals, insects, and even fish. Owls are well adapted for hunting. Their soft, fluffy feathers make their flight nearly silent. They have very good hearing, which helps them to hunt well in the darkness. The sharp hooked beaks and claws of the owl make it very easy to tear apart prey quickly, although owls also eat some prey whole. Owl eyes are unusual. Like most predators, both of the owl’s eyes face front. The owl cannot move its eyes. Owls are far-sighted, which means they can see very well far away… but they can’t see up close very well at all. Fortunately, their distant vision is what they use for hunting, and they can see far away even in low light. Owls have facial disks around their eyes, tufts of feathers in a circle around each eye. These facial disks are thought to help with the owl’s hearing. Owls can turn their heads 180 degrees. This makes it look like they might be able to turn their heads all the way around, but 180 degrees is all the owl needs to see what’s going on all around him. Perhaps because of the owl’s mysterious appearance, especially its round eyes and flexible neck, there are a lot of myths and superstitions about owls. -

The Effect of Font Type on Screen Readability by People with Dyslexia LUZ RELLO and RICARDO BAEZA-YATES, Web Research Group, DTIC, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain Around 10% of the people have dyslexia, a neurological disability that impairs a person’s ability to read and write. There is evidence that the presentation of the text has a significant effect on a text’s accessibility for people with dyslexia. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no experiments that objectively 15 measure the impact of the typeface (font) on screen reading performance. In this article, we present the first experiment that uses eye-tracking to measure the effect of typeface on reading speed. Using a mixed between-within subject design, 97 subjects (48 with dyslexia) read 12 texts with 12 different fonts. Font types have an impact on readability for people with and without dyslexia. For the tested fonts, sans serif , monospaced, and roman font styles significantly improved the reading performance over serif , proportional, and italic fonts. On the basis of our results, we recommend a set of more accessible fonts for people with and without dyslexia. HUDAK2 Department of Geology, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa 52242 Previous workers have proposed a pre-Illinoian age for the deepest bedrock entrenchment of northeastern Iowa valleys. Lines of evidence used ro support a pre-Illinoian age of entrenchment are: ( 1) deep bedrock-entrenchment interpreted ro take "long" periods of time, (2) "valleys" filled with "red-weathered drift", which was interpreted as "old", (3) differences in cross-valley profiles supposedly related to glacial advances, (4) thick beds of gravel could only be deposited by outwash streams, and (5) glacially buried (drift-filled) bedrock valleys exist outside of the Paleozoic Plateau ro the west and south. -

Abstract This report summarizes current knowledge on the status and ecology of the Mexican spot- ted owl within the Upper Gila Mountains Recovery Unit (UGM RU). It was written at the request of U.S. Forest Service personnel involved in the Four Forests Restoration Initia- tive (4FRI), a collaborative, landscape-scale restoration effort covering approximately 2.4 million ac (1 million ha) across all or part of four National Forests (Apache-Sitgreaves, Coconino, Kaibab, and Tonto National Forests) located within the UGM RU. The UGM RU supports >50% of the known population of Mexican spotted owls, and the central location of the UGM RU within the overall range of the owl appears to facilitate gene flow throughout that range. Consequently, the UGM population is viewed as important to stability within the overall range of the owl, and management that impacts owls within the UGM RU could affect owl populations beyond that RU. Abstract Marcot, Bruce G. 1995. Owls of old forests of the world. Gen. Tech. Rep. PNW- GTR-343. Portland, OR: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station. 64 p. A review of literature on habitat associations of owls of the world revealed that about 83 species of owls among 18 genera are known or suspected to be closely asso- ciated with old forests. Old forest is defined as old-growth or undisturbed forests, typically with dense canopies. The 83 owl species include 70 tropical and 13 tem- perate forms. Specific habitat associations have been studied for only 12 species (7 tropical and 5 temperate), whereas about 71 species (63 tropical and 8 temperate) remain mostly unstudied. Some 26 species (31 percent of all owls known or sus- pected to be associated with old forests in the tropics) are entirely or mostly restricted to tropical islands. Threats to old-forest owls, particularly the island forms, include conversion of old upland forests, use of pesticides, loss of riparian gallery forests, and loss of trees with cavities for nests or roosts. Conservation of old-forest owls should include (1) studies and inventories of habitat associations, particularly for little-studied tropical and insular species; (2) protection of specific, existing temperate and tropical old-forest tracts; and (3) studies to determine if reforestation and vege- tation manipulation can restore or maintain habitat conditions. An appendix describes vocalizations of all species of Strix and the related genus Ciccaba. Funding was provided by the Arizona State Land Department This report is preliminary and has not been edited or reviewed for conformity with Arizona Geological Survey standards Introduction The Verde River drainage is a major river system that heads in Big Chino Valley in north central Arizona, flows generally southeast through the rugged terrain of central Arizona, and empties into the Salt River east of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is unusual in Arizona because much the main channel of the Verde River is perennial for much its length. Data summarized in this report were gathered to aid in the assessment of the navigability of the Verde River in February, 1912, when Arizona became a State. These investigations were conducted in cooperation with CH2MHill and were funded by the Arizona State Land Department. The purposes of this report are to (1) outline the geologic and geomorphic framework of the Verde River, (2) to describe the physical character of the channel of the Verde River, and (3) to evaluate how channel morphology and position have changed in the past century. Physiography, Geology, and General Geomorphology of the River The Verde River heads in and flows through the rugged highlands and valleys of central Arizona (Figure 1).
