STATE OF MINNESOTA Journal of the Senate NINETY-SECOND LEGISLATURE FIRST DAY St. Paul, Minnesota, Tuesday, January 5, 2021 This being the day designated by the Constitution and Laws of the State of Minnesota for the assembling of the Legislature, the Senators-elect met in the Chamber of the Capitol and were called to order at 12 o'clock noon by the Lieutenant Governor, Peggy Flanagan. Prayer was offered by the Chaplain, Pastor Mike Smith. The Lieutenant Governor and the Senators-elect gave the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. The Lieutenant Governor appointed Mary Kiffmeyer as Clerk Pro Tem. The Clerk Pro Tem called the roll by legislative districts in numerical order, and the following Senators-elect presented proof of their eligibility to be seated as members of the Senate. Office on the Economic Status of Women Status Report WOMEN IN MINNESOTA LEGISLATURE, 2012 This report reflects certified election results from the special elections held on January 10 and April 10, 2012. Women in the Minnesota Legislature, 2012 Minnesota House, 2012 Minnesota Senate, 2012 As a result of special elections held on January 10 and April 10, 2012, the number of women elected to serve in Women Women the legislature increased by two to 66 (32.8%) of the 201 Men 31.3% 33.6% seats in the Minnesota Legislature. This is a decrease 66.4% of women compared to the 2009-10 biennium, down from 70 (34.8%). The number of elected DFL women has decreased by 14 seats from 2009. The number of elected Republican women has increased by 10 seats Men from 2009. 68.7% Senate Women in the Minnesota Legislature, 2012 Women were elected to hold 21 (31.3%) of the 67 seats in the Minnesota Senate as a result of the DFL Republican Total special elections in 2012. This is a drop from the House 27 18 45 highest number of women elected to the Senate, 27 Senate 11 10 21 (40.3%), in 2006. Legislature 38 28 66 House Women were elected to hold 45 (33.6%) of the 134 seats in the Minnesota House of Representatives as a result of the 2012 special elections. This percentage is an historic high for the House. Newly Elected Eleven women are serving their first term in the House starting in 2011: Representatives Susan Allen, Diane Anderson, Mary Franson, Marion Greene, Andrea Kieffer, Debra Kiel, Kathy Lohmer, Carolyn McElfatrick, Carly Melin, Pam Myhra and Rena Moran.

Dear Christian Johnson and Spyhouse Coffee Management, We are the current and future legislators elected to represent the districts in which your coffee shops are located including North East, North Loop, Downtown, Whittier, Uptown, and St. Paul. Your customers and workers are our constituents and neighbors. After learning of their inspiring effort to organize, we are writing to ask you to voluntarily recognize your employees’ union under the UNITE HERE! Local 17 banner. In Minneapolis and St. Paul, the leisure and hospitality sector is a major employer representing about 10% of our workers according to DEED. These workers make less on average than in any other sector. Many lack healthcare coverage. Those that are covered fear losing their insurance due to sudden loss of work. Whether or not they have a steady job, workers are responsible for making their monthly rent or mortgage payments, and rents have continued to go up in spite of the crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, service industry workers have been subjected to unprecedented conditions at work. They do not have the option of working from home. They are on the frontlines. On top of their normal duties, they are now responsible for keeping coworkers and customers safe by adhering to strict COVID-19 policies and enforcing rules such as mask mandates. Still, there is no perfect system for preventing the spread of COVID-19, and every customer interaction comes with a chance of contracting a brutal, life-altering, and potentially lethal virus. We are asking more from them than we ever have before. These workers bear all of this to provide the community a little bit of normalcy.
