Bruce Elder Ryerson University Among the most erudite of the San Francisco Renaissance writers was the poet and Zen Buddhist priest Philip Whalen (1923–2002). In “‘Goldberry is Waiting’; Or, P.W., His Magic Education As A Poet,” Whalen remarks, I saw that poetry didn’t belong to me, it wasn’t my province; it was older and larger and more powerful than I, and it would exist beyond my life-span. And it was, in turn, only one of the means of communicating with those worlds of imagination and vision and magical and religious knowledge which all painters and musicians and inventors and saints and shamans and lunatics and yogis and dope fiends and novelists heard and saw and ‘tuned in’ on. Poetry was not a communication from ME to ALL THOSE OTHERS, but from the invisible magical worlds to me . everybody else, ALL THOSE OTHERS.1 The manner of writing is familiar: it is peculiar to the San Francisco Renaissance, but the ideas expounded are common enough: that art mediates between a higher realm of pure spirituality and consensus reality is a hallmark of theopoetics of any stripe. Likewise, Whalen’s claim that art conveys a magical and religious experience that “all painters and musicians and inventors and saints and shamans and lunatics and yogis and dope fiends and novelists . ‘turned in’ on” is characteristic of the San Francisco Renaissance in its rhetorical manner, but in its substance the assertion could have been made by vanguard artists of diverse allegiances (a fact that suggests much about the prevalence of theopoetics in oppositional poetics). -
A Selection of Works by Poet David Meltzer
A selection of works by poet David Meltzer to coincide with a reading of his work, Friday, September 4, 4:30–6:00 pm, Writers’ Studio, San Francisco Campus (free and open to the public) A poet at age 11, raised in Brooklyn, and seasoned in North Beach, San Francisco, David Meltzer began his literary career during the Beat heyday and is considered a major figure in the San Francisco / Beat Renaissance. Meltzer came to prominence as the youngest poet to have work included in the anthology The New American Poetry 1945-1960. At the age of 20 Meltzer recorded his poetry with jazz in Los Angeles and also became a singer-songwriter and guitarist for several Bay Area bands during the 1960s, including The Serpent Power, whose album made Rolling Stone's Top 40 List in 1968. He is the author of many volumes of poetry including Arrows: Selected Poetry 1957-1992; No Eyes: Lester Young, Beat Thing, David’s Copy, and most recently When I Was A Poet (2011) and #60 in City Lights’ Pocket Poet’s Series. Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Beat Poet, author, publisher, and founder of City Lights, has described Meltzer as "one of the greats of post-World-War-Two San Francisco poets and musicians.” In 2008 he received the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award, and in 2011 he was awarded the Bay Area Guardian's Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2012 he was nominated for the Northern California Book Award in Poetry. Meltzer is featured in several documentary films, including Mary Kerr’s recently released epic, Wild History Groove, which focuses on artists and writers in North Beach. -

London: Published by Nancy Cunard at Wishart & Co, 1934. First edition, first issue binding, of this landmark anthology. Nancy Cunard, an independently wealthy English heiress, edited Negro Anthology with her African-American lover, Henry Crowder, to whom she dedicated the anthology, and published it at her own expense in an edition of 1000 copies. Cunard’s seminal compendium of prose, poetry, and musical scores chiefly reflecting the black experience in the United States was a socially and politically radical expression of Cunard’s passionate activism, her devotion to civil rights and her vehement anti-fascism, which, not surprisingly given the times in which she lived, contributed to a communist bias that troubles some critics of Cunard and her anthology. Cunard’s account of the trial of the Scottsboro Boys, published in 1932, provoked racist hate mail, some of which she published in the anthology. Among the 150 writers who contributed approximately 250 articles are W. E. B. Du Bois, Arna Bontemps, Sterling Brown, Countee Cullen, Alain Locke, Arthur Schomburg, Samuel Beckett, who translated a number of essays by French writers; Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, William Carlos Williams, Louis Zukofsky, George Antheil, Ezra Pound, Theodore Dreiser, among many others. -

The Lew Welch
Lew Welch: Hermit Poet of Rat Flat Jane Falk The University of Arkon Introduction In May of 1971, Lew Welch disappeared into the woods surrounding Kitkitdizze, poet Gary Snyder’s home, and into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. He had taken a gun and left a farewell note. Despite some supposed sightings and a prolonged search, his body was never found, and no trace of Welch has been seen since. The consensus at the time was that he had committed suicide on some high rock outcropping leaving his body for the vultures (his totem animal) to find. Welch had suffered from lifelong depression and alcohol abuse. He seemed to have been given a last chance at putting his life together when Snyder and other members of the Bald Mountain Association agreed to allow him to build a cabin on land near Snyder’s home. Welch had organized friends to help construct the cabin and had sent out requests for the loan of money to friends and family, receiving a positive response. He saw building this hermit’s cabin as a last chance to put his life together without alcohol and went on Antabuse. Unfortunately, he periodically stopped the drug so he could continue to drink, according to Aram Saroyan in Genesis Angels, and this, coupled with the depressive aspect of Antabuse itself, could have led to suicidal tendencies (127). Welch’s mysterious and complete disappearance can be likened to that of the Chinese hermit poet, Han Shan, who lived in the T’ang Dynasty and whose poems Snyder had translated in the 1950s as Cold Mountain Poems. -

The Beats were a literary and cultural phenomenon originating in New York City in the 1940s that reached worldwide signii cance. Although its most well- known i gures remain Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs, the Beat Movement radiates out to encompass a rich diversity of i gures and texts that merit further study. Consummate innovators, the Beats had a profound effect not only on the direction of American literature but also on models of sociopolitical critique that would become more widespread in the 1960s and beyond. Bringing together the most inl uential Beat scholars writing today, this Companion provides a comprehensive exploration of the Beat Movement, asking critical questions about its associated i gures and arguing for their importance to postwar American letters. Steven Belletto is Associate Professor of English at Lafayette College. He is the author of No Accident, Comrade: Chance and Design in Cold War American Narratives (2012) and a co- editor of American Literature and Culture in an Age of Cold War: A Critical Reassessment (2012). The author of numerous articles on post- 1945 American literature and culture that have appeared in journals such as American Literature , American Quarterly , ELH , and Twentieth- Century Literature , from 2011 to 2016 he was associate editor of the journal Contemporary Literature , and is currently an editor there. -

North, Chair Stewart Brand’s Whole Earth publications (The Whole Earth Catalog, The Supplement to the Whole Earth Catalog, CoEvolution Quarterly, The Whole Earth Review, and Whole Earth) were well known not only for showcasing alternative approaches to technology, the environment, and Eastern mysticism, but also for their tendency to juxtapose radical and seemingly contradictory subjects in an “open form” format. They have also been the focus of notable works of scholarship in the social sciences. Areas of exploration include their relationship to the development of the personal computer, the environmental movement and alternative technology, the alternative West Coast publishing industry, Space Colonies, and Nanotechnology. What is perhaps less well known is Brand’s interest in the Beat poetry of Jack Kerouac, Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsberg, Michael McClure, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso, Robert Creeley, David Meltzer, and Peter Orlovsky beginning with CoEvolution Quarterly in 1974.
