Photo: FEI/Tomas Holbecher 2 3 Furusiyya and the FEI Nations Cup™ Editorial by Louise Parkes It’s not always easy to take a great idea and make it even better, but that is exactly what the new-look Furusiyya series has done for the long-established and much-loved sport of FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping. In 2013, thanks to the support and enthusiasm of the Saudi Equestrian Fund, this team Jumping competition which has grasped the public imagination for over a century was modernised and transformed, and extended its appeal right across the globe. The ancient term ‘Furusiyya’ embraces the concepts of horsemanship and equestrian expertise along with purity, nobility and chivalry, and all of these elements have long been an intrinsic part of the history and tradition of Nations Cup Jumping. Great pride in representing one’s country, in demonstrating the extraordinary bond between horse and rider as they bravely tackle the toughest courses of fences, and a huge sense of team spirit and camaraderie have been key to its success and popularity. However it was initially restricted to a limited number of top-class nations while the rest of the world looked on. Last year, however, Furusiyya became the catalyst as the doors were flung wide open and a whole range of new countries were encouraged to take part. It was a challenging moment for the traditionalists who felt that only the best of the best should compete against one another in this particular series, but even its strongest critics altered their opinions as the inaugural Furusiyya season progressed. Provided with the opportunity to show just how good they could be, previously unknown horse-and-rider combinations sparkled and shone, and a whole range of new countries began to emerge with the promise of great things to come. The very first season ended with a glorious finale in Barcelona, Spain at which the French team came out on top ahead of Brazil while Ireland finished third. The atmosphere was electric, and the event was hailed, far and wide, as one of the most enjoyable, entertaining and competitive fixtures of recent times. HRH Prince Faissal commented at the end of the series about the potential for further growth over the coming years, and that in itself is another exciting prospect. This year’s Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping series is expected to further cement the future of the prestigious and high-profile sport which was once described by FEI President HRH Princess Haya as “the jewel in the crown of the FEI”. Once again, Barcelona will host the world final in October, and we can expect many wonderful moments of sporting endeavour before the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ 2014 champions are crowned. 4 Presentation of Furusiyya has embraced the (هيسورف :For centuries, the ancient term Furusiyya (Arabic idea of horsemanship and equestrian knowledge, and now this same sense of purity, nobility and chivalry has been brought to the FEI Nations Cup™ – the Show Jumping’s leading team competition. The term is a derivation of faris, or horseman, and faras, a horse. Furusiyya is the brand name for the commercial arm of the Saudi Equestrian Fund. The Saudi Equestrian Fund was created by King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz by royal decree in November 2009 to give the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia a lasting legacy in equestrianism through sport and cultural events. Reflecting a huge growth in popularity for the sport around the world, the new structure of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping embraces more countries than ever before, who will compete head to head in a competition which pits the traditional powerhouses of the sport against teams from developing nations. Furusiyya is immensely proud to be the title sponsor of the FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping until 2017, and to be the catalyst for the international expansion of this great equestrian competition. During the inaugural 2013 season, no less than 37 nations competed for 18 places at the Final, which will was staged to great success in Barcelona (ESP) at the end of September. The first Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final featured teams representing countries from around the world and was a true reflection of the popularity of the Jumping sport on the global stage. But 2013 was only the start. The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping has been created to make the sport more accessible to all nations, and Furusiyya believes that the competition will lead to more countries than ever before wanting to compete against the best in years to come. This will see an increase in the number of Nations Cup shows being staged around the world and ultimately, higher standards of competition across all levels. So, we at Furusiyya wish all the horse and rider combinations the best of luck today, and let’s all enjoy the start of a new era and look forward to some top class international team Jumping throughout the 2014 season. 5 Photo caption: Riders representing 18 countries, who competed for the €2 million prize money on offer at the first ever Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final held in September 2013, gathered in front of Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia on the eve of the event. In January 2013 Longines and the FEI formalised a partnership that sees the brand become the FEI’s first Top Partner. Longines will also be the Official Timekeeper and the Official Watch of the FEI. Longines’ passion for equestrian sport dates back to 1878, when it produced a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount. Seen on the racetracks as early as 1881 and extremely popular among jockeys and horse-lovers, this model enabled its user to time performances to the second. It was already being used by most sport judges in New York in 1886. In addition, the brand was involved for the first time in the Concours Hippique International Officiel de Genève as timekeeper in 1926. Today Longines’ involvement in equestrian sports includes besides Jumping, Endurance and flat racing. The partnership
