The genus Phanaeus (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) forms an important part of the dung bee- tle fauna in much of the Western Hemisphere. Here a phylogeny for Phanaeus, including 49 Phanaeus sp., and 12 outgroup taxa, is proposed. Parsimony analysis of 67 morphological characters, and one biogeographical character produced 629 equally parsimonious trees of 276 steps. Oxysternon, the putative sister taxon is nested well within the subgenus Notiophanaeus, implying that Oxysternon might ultimately need to be synonymized with Phanaeus. Species groups of Edmonds (1994) recovered as monophyletic are paleano, endymion, chalcomelas, tridens, triangularis, and quadridens. An ‘unscaled’ equal weighting analysis yielded 57,149 equally parsimonious trees of 372 steps. The strict consensus of these trees yielded a mono- phyletic Phanaeus with the inclusion of Oxysternon. Bootstrap values are relatively low and some clades are unresolved. Dana L. A faunal survey of the elateroidea of Montana by Catherine Elaine Seibert A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology Montana State University © Copyright by Catherine Elaine Seibert (1993) Abstract: The beetle family Elateridae is a large and taxonomically difficult group of insects that includes many economically important species of cultivated crops. Elaterid larvae, or wireworms, have a history of damaging small grains in Montana. Although chemical seed treatments have controlled wireworm damage since the early 1950's, it is- highly probable that their availability will become limited, if not completely unavailable, in the near future. In that event, information about Montana's elaterid fauna, particularity which species are present and where, will be necessary for renewed research efforts directed at wireworm management. A faunal survey of the superfamily Elateroidea, including the Elateridae and three closely related families, was undertaken to determine the species composition and distribution in Montana. Because elateroid larvae are difficult to collect and identify, the survey concentrated exclusively on adult beetles. This effort involved both the collection of Montana elateroids from the field and extensive borrowing of the same from museum sources. Results from the survey identified one artematopid, 152 elaterid, six throscid, and seven eucnemid species from Montana. County distributions for each species were mapped. In addition, dichotomous keys, and taxonomic and biological information, were compiled for various taxa. Species of potential economic importance were also noted, along with their host plants. Although the knowledge of the superfamily' has been improved significantly, it is not complete. -

Saw-toothed Grain Beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis Description QUICK SCAN Adults: Small, 2.5 mm (0.9 inches) long, and reddish brown. Beetles have 6 teeth on both sides of the thorax. Looking at the head of the Saw-toothed grain beetles, the segment behind the eye is the same SIZE / LENGTH sizes as the eye. Merchant grain beetles are similar in appearance but Adult 0.9 inch (2.5 mm) the segment behind the eye is distinctly smaller. Larvae 0.14 inch (3-4 mm) Eggs: Eggs are not readily viable without microscopic examination. COLOR RANGE Larvae: Larvae are 3-4 mm (0.14 inches) long, white to yellowish in color, and slightly flat. It is a family of high economic importance, as some of the species are pests of stored goods; some of them are distributed throughout the world, mainly by human activities. Nine teen species of Silvanidae in ten genera are hereby recorded from Israel. Eleven of those are considered alien, of which four are established either in nature or indoor; eight species are either indigenous or have been introduced in the very remote past. Seven species, Psammoecus bipunctatus, P. triguttatus, Pa rasilvanus fairemairei, Silvanus castaneus, S. inarmatus, S. ?mediocris and Uleiota planatus, are recorded from Israel for the first time. Airaphilus syriacus was recorded only once in 1913; its status is doubtful. A. abeillei may occur in Israel, although no material is available. Twelve species are associated with stored products, although only three, Ahasverus advena, Oryzaephilus suri na- mensis and O. mercator, are of distinct economic importance; the rest are either rare or only occasionally intercepted on imported goods. RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DEAD WOOD AND ARTHROPODS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES by MICHAEL DARRAGH ULYSHEN (Under the Direction of James L. Hanula) ABSTRACT The importance of dead wood to maintaining forest diversity is now widely recognized. However, the habitat associations and sensitivities of many species associated with dead wood remain unknown, making it difficult to develop conservation plans for managed forests. The purpose of this research, conducted on the upper coastal plain of South Carolina, was to better understand the relationships between dead wood and arthropods in the southeastern United States. In a comparison of forest types, more beetle species emerged from logs collected in upland pine-dominated stands than in bottomland hardwood forests. This difference was most pronounced for Quercus nigra L., a species of tree uncommon in upland forests. In a comparison of wood postures, more beetle species emerged from logs than from snags, but a number of species appear to be dependent on snags including several canopy specialists. In a study of saproxylic beetle succession, species richness peaked within the first year of death and declined steadily thereafter. However, a number of species appear to be dependent on highly decayed logs, underscoring the importance of protecting wood at all stages of decay. In a study comparing litter-dwelling arthropod abundance at different distances from dead wood, arthropods were more abundant near dead wood than away from it. In another study, ground- dwelling arthropods and saproxylic beetles were little affected by large-scale manipulations of dead wood in upland pine-dominated forests, possibly due to the suitability of the forests surrounding the plots. -
