This study assessed the effect of different shelters on survival, specific growth rates and molting frequency in mud crab juvenile, Scylla tranquebarica for the enhancement in aquaculture production purposes. Mud crab juveniles with initial weight ranging from 0.3 to 0.5 g and initial carapace width ranging from 1.2 to 1.4 cm were chosen and placed in tanks of 135 liter volume capacity filled with 80 liter of water. There were 18 juveniles with triplicates for each treatment. Four treatments were introduced: treatment 1 (control - without shelter), treatment 2 (black net shelter), treatment 3 (green net shelter) and treatment 4 (sand substrate shelter). The study was done in triplicate and conducted for 50 days. Mud crab juveniles reared in treatment 4 showed significantly higher survival (59.26±2.62%) compared to other treatments. Besides, mud crab juveniles cultured in treatment 2 had the highest molting frequency. As a conclusion, the usage of black mesh net in the treatment 2 rearing increased the molting rate of mud crab juveniles, while higher survival rate was recorded in the treatment 4. As a recommendation, the effect of different substrate, shelters and material used can be done for further study. The finding from the present study can be applied in other mud crab or crustaceans. -

Dr. Sutter, the zoologist, stayed in the islands from 19 May to 26 November; most of the time was spent by him in Sumba (21 May-31 October), and extensive collections were made there, among which a most interesting material of Decapod Crustacea, which forms the subject of the present paper. A few Crustacea were collected on the islands of Sumbawa (on 19 May) and Flores (19 and 21 November). -

The mating success and hybridization of Mud crab, Scylla spp. in controlled tanks Gunarto, Sulaeman, Herlinah Research Institute for Coastal Aquaculture and Fisheries Extension Maros, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Corresponding author: Gunarto, [email protected] Abstract. Interspecific hybridization in mud crabs hardly occurs in uncontrolled conditions (in the wild). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the reproductive performance of female broodstock (fecundity, hatchability and crablet production) after mating with the same species and interspecific hybridization among Scylla spp. in controlled tanks. Four rounded fiberglass tanks, 1 m high and with a diameter of 2.1 m, were filled with 32 ppt saline filtered seawater. Then, 10 pairs (male/female) of mud crab broodstocks were stocked in each tank for mating and hybridization. The study involved four treatments: 1. Scylla paramamosain male paired with S. tranquebarica female; 2. S. tranquebarica male paired with S. paramamosain female; 3. S. tranquebarica male paired with the females of S. paramamosain, S. olivacea, and S. tranquebarica; 4. S. paramamosain male paired with females of S. tranquebarica, S. olivacea, and S. paramamosain. The number of precopulation and copulation incidences were recorded daily. Post copulated female crabs grew individually in different tanks until the gonads matured and the crabs spawned. The results of the research showed that the precopulation incidence obtained in treatment tanks 2, 3 and 4 were not significantly different (P>0.05), but they were significantly higher than the treatment in tank 1 (P<0.05). The interspecific hybridization between the female of S. paramamosain and the male of S. tranquebarica resulted in egg fecundities from 32200 to 1868000 eggs, and a hatching rate between 2 and 45%. -

Prof. Sudharto, Tembalang, Semarang, Jawa Tengah Abstract. Scylla tranquebarica is a species of mangrove crabs belong to family Portunidae, class Crustacea. The purpose of this research was to study population mangrove crab S. tranquebarica habitat in Segara Anakan Lagoon Cilacap Regency. The mangrove crabs were collected in April 2019 using bubu trap as fishing gear. Sampling was carried out in Klace, Sapuregel and Panikel area. The growth pattern for mangrove crab in the Sapuregel area was allometric negative both for males (b= 2.27) and females (b= 2.28). But for Panikel village area, the growth pattern for males was allometric negative (b = 2.67), while for females it was allometric positive (b = 3.95). In the Panikel area, the average value for the condition factor was 1.456 ± 0.65. Additionally, in the Sapuregel area the average value of Condition factor was 1.004±0.09. 1 Introduction Scylla transquebarica is mangrove crab belonged to family Portunidae, class Crustacea [1,2]. Most of the mangrove crabs are common in the habitat of the mangrove ecosystem in the coastal area [3,4]. Mangrove crabs have an important role in the benthic ecosystem in the mangrove area [5]. -

Classification, Biodiversity and Conservation of Marine Commercial 11 Crabs of India Josileen Jose Crustacean Fisheries Division 9 One of the best known and most intensely studied groups is the true crabs of the infraorder Brachyura. Brachyuran crabs belong to the Order Decapoda, the most diverse group of crustaceans alive today (Ng et al., 2008). The known size of crabs now ranges from a maximum leg span of approximately 4 m in the giant Japanese spider crab Macrocheira kaempferi and a maximum carapace width of 46 cm in the giant Tasmanian crab Pseudocarcinus gigas to a minimum of 1.5 mm across the carapace for a mature ovigerous female pinnotherid, Nannotheres moorei, the smallest known species of crab. Every living thing is classified into one of the three domains. Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya are the three domains. The eight levels of classification are domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. True crabs are classified as follows: Phylum: Arthropoda Subphylum: Crustacea Class: Malacostraca Order: Decapoda Suborder: Pleocyemata Infraorder: Brachyura Linnaeus, 1758 Training Manual on Species Identification The basic crab design consists of an expanded carapace (formed by a fusion of the head and some thoracic somites), and a strongly reduced abdomen that is tightly tucked underneath the thorax. In addition, the first pereiopods of brachyurans are fully chelate, and the walking legs are placed at the sides of the body. True brachyuran crabs are often confused with hermit and porcelain crabs belonging to the infraorder Anomura. In general, most anomuran crabs have only three pairs of walking legs clearly visible, with the last pair being very small and normally positioned under the abdomen and not visible externally. -

Specimens of crab were collected from 11 different marine sites/ habitats along the coastal region of the state. Of the several specimens examined on site, 30 morphologically distinct samples were selected for the study, and total 47 different morphological characters were measured. Three different species of genus Scylla were identified viz. Scylla serrata, Scylla tranquebarica and Scylla Olivacea. We report Scylla tranquebarica and Scylla Olivacea for the first time from the state. In general, S. serrata is reported as a dominant species with wide spread distribution while rest of the species show patchy distribution. Introduction The Infraorder brachyuran contains 6,793 species in 93 families (Ng. et al., 2008). While Indian contributes about 705 species and in Gujarat 113 species were reported (Dev Roy, 2013; Trivedi et al., 2015). Out of 113species of brachyuran crabs reported from Gujarat, 100 species were reported from Gulf of Kachchh, 40 species are reported from Saurashtra coast and only 22 species are reported from Gulf of Khambhat (Trivedi et al., 2015). First comprehensive work on brachyuran crabs of Gujarat state was carried out By Chhapgar in different parts of Gujarat who has reported 42 species of brachyuran crabs from different sites like Okha, Kodinar, Umarsadi, Kolak and Udwada (Chhapgar, 1957; 1958). After that Chandy (1969; 1973) and Chhapgar & Mundkur (1995) have added few more crabs to the existing list of brachyuran fauna of Gujarat. -

In this region, capture fishery depends on simple methods, using hook and line, while crab fattening in brackishwater ponds depends on household labour and indigenous feeds. The practice of fattening of crabs is based on discarded mud crab congeners of the genus Scylla viz., Scylla serrata (Forskal, 1775), Scylla tranquebarica (Fabricius, 1798) and Scylla olivacea (Herbst, 1796) without segregating species-wise. Uncertainty of species level identity as well as wild harvest of under-size crabs are major constraints in capture fishery and development crab fattening in this region. In this context, recognition of species level identity is considered vital towards sustainable wild harvest including fattening of discarded mud crabs, which plays an important role in the rural economy of Indian Sundarban. It is believed that species specific and size specific fattening enterprise may lead to easy aquacultural operation and precise production of crabs even in the reduction of cost of fattening operation. Small scale mud crab fisheries exist in Teluk Sulaman to support local livelihood, but there is a tendency of overfishing due to the increasing demand of this resource. The diversity of mud crab in Teluk Sulaman is still unknown. Information on the diversity of mud crab is vital, not only for conservation purpose but also to support the utilisation of this valuable resource sustainably. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the species of mud crabs in Teluk Sulaman, using morphological and molecular approaches. Based on morphological data, Teluk Sulaman only supports one species of mud crab, namely Scylla tranquebarica. The 460 bp 16S rRNA gene obtained in this study matched S. tranquebarica (GenBank Accession No.: KM258653.1), thus supported the conventional method of species identification. The phylogenetic trees agreed that S. tranquebarica is monophyletic. However, the relationship between S. serrata and S. olivacea remains unresolved. Future studies should explore spatial and temporal sampling besides using other genetic markers to further understand mud crab population in Teluk Sulaman further.
