    Butch Davis Profile, November 2006 Butch Davis, former head coach at the University of Miami and the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, will be the 33rd head coach in University of North Carolina history and the ninth since the ACC was formed in 1953. Davis is currently in his second season as an analyst on the NFL Network. He was head coach for six seasons at the University of Miami (1995-2000) and led the Hurricanes to a 51-20 record, three Big East Conference championships and four postseason bowl wins in as many appearances. Davis has coached in 11 postseason bowl games as an assistant or head coach, including two apiece in the Fiesta, Orange and Sugar Bowls. In 1995, Davis took over a Miami program that was faced with NCAA sanctions that restricted the number of scholarships in his first three seasons. However, his Hurricane teams finished ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 on four occasions, including No. 2 in the nation in 2000 when the Canes went 11-1 and beat Florida, 37- 20, in the Sugar Bowl. Miami was 8-3 in 1995 (the school declined to play in a bowl game), 9-3 in 1996 (beat Virginia in the Carquest Bowl), 5-6 in 1997, 9-3 in 1998 (beat NC State in Micron PC Bowl), 9-4 in 1999 (beat Georgia Tech in Gator Bowl) and 11-1 in 2000. In 1999, Miami was invited to play in the Kickoff Classic and defeated Ohio State, 23-12. The 2000 team was second in the nation in scoring, fifth in total offense, fifth in scoring defense and eighth in pass defense.

    DETROIT’S THANKSGIVING DAY TRADITION It was, legend says, a typically colorful, probably chilly, November day in 1622 that Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated the new world's bounty with a sumptuous feast. They sat together at Plymouth Plantation (they spelled it Plimouth) in Massachusetts, gave thanks for the goodness set before them, then dined on pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, maize, cranberry sauce, turkey and who knows what else. Actually, fish was just as predominant a staple. And history books say pumpkin pie really debuted a year later. But regardless of the accuracy of the details, that's how Thanksgiving Day is seen by Americans -- except Detroiters. They may have most of the same images as everyone else, but with a new twist that began in 1934. That's when Detroiters and their outstate Michigan compatriots found themselves at the dawn of an unplanned behavior modification, courtesy of George A. "Dick" Richards, owner of the city's new entry in the National Football League: The Detroit Lions. The relationship between Detroit and Thanksgiving dates back to 1934 when owner G.A. Richards scheduled a holiday contest between his first-year Lions and the Chicago Bears. Some 75 years later, fans throughout the State of Michigan have transformed an annual holiday event into the single greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. Indeed, if football is America’s passion, Thanksgiving football is Detroit’s passion. DETROIT AND THANKSGIVING DAY No other team in professional sports can claim to be as much a part of an American holiday as can the Detroit Lions with Thanksgiving.

But on Monday Gary Walters had to handle a very loud and angry complaint from a team that DID get into the 65-team field. Niagara, which won Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament, said it felt "disrespected" because it was put into the first-round game with Florida A&M Tuesday night in Dayton, Ohio. Niagara (22-11), which started the season 1-6 because it had suspended several players, felt it should not be in the Tuesday night game because there were other teams in the tournament with lower rankings than its 134 in the RPI. "I think it was shocking," coach Joe Mihalich told the Associated Press. "I think everybody was shocked and maybe some people were insulted by it. But that's good. That's fine with us." Walters dismissed the suggestion that asking teams to play in Tuesday's game cheapens their NCAA experience. "There are 260 teams that would love to be playing in the opening round game tomorrow night," Walters said in a conference call with reporters Monday afternoon.
