Pitons, Cirques and Remparts of Reunion Island
EUROPE / NORTH AMERICA PITONS, CIRQUES AND REMPARTS OF REUNION ISLAND FRANCE WORLD HERITAGE NOMINATION - IUCN TECHNICAL EVALUATION PITONS, CIRQUES AND REMPARTS OF REUNION ISLAND (FRANCE) - ID Nº 1317 Background note: This nomination was submitted in 2008 for consideration by the World Heritage Committee at its 33rd Session in 2009. Accordingly, IUCN initiated the evaluation of this nomination in 2008/9 and this included the evaluation mission to La Réunion. In March 2009, the decision was taken by the government of France to postpone the assessment of the nomination by UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee until its 34th Session in 2010. This decision was required due to the fact that three nominations from France were proposed for consideration by the 33rd Session of the World Heritage Committee. The State Party of France had been requested by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to identify two nominations in line with the limits on annual numbers of nominations set in the Operational Guidelines. As the evaluation process was already initiated by IUCN, a dialogue was maintained with the State Party to clarify a number of issues and address recommendations resulting from the evaluation mission, and discussions from the 2008 session of the IUCN/World Heritage Panel. This evaluation report is therefore based on the original nomination plus the additional information provided by the State Party. 1. DOCUMENTATION i) Date nomination received by IUCN: 31st January 2008 ii) Additional information offi cially requested from and provided by the State Party: additional information was requested by IUCN in December 2008. Additional information from the State Party was provided in February 2009 and November 2009. -

Preliminary Study Summary
MAISON DE L’HISTOIRE DE FRANCE COMITÉ D’ORIENTATION SCIENTIFIQUE Juin 2011 PRELIMINARY STUDY SUMMARY The time has come to provide everyone with a cultural venue offering exhibitions, information and debate about France’s past: a Maison where people will be able to examine the cross-ferti - lisation of a word – “History” – and a name – “France” – whose social identity is changing rapidly in the early years of the 21 st century. This Centre will be none of the following: a training ground for French national identity, a cosy national feel-good venue, a parallel university, a forum, or a pulpit. Nor will it be a pageant of diversities and pluralities that masks the singular and continuous nature of this country. With its metaphorical doors and windows wide open, it will encourage the greatest possible number of people to familiarize themselves with documents, “footprints”, images, sounds, writings and ideas. It embodies the cultural ambition of fostering the diffusion and transmission of historical knowledge in order to question better how we live together, in the past and in the future and to understand and help others understand in order to gain access, through a culture of history, to some truths about oneself, other peoples, and the world at large. ///////// PRELIMINARY STUDY SUMMARY The Maison will be a place where everyone will be able to find the tools they need to gain an understanding, along with opportunities to probe the history of France. It is to be a “cultural institution created to present to the widest possible audience, in -
The British in Corsica from the Mid- Nineteenth Century to the Eve of the Second World War
From Battleground to Playground: The British in Corsica from the Mid- Nineteenth Century to the Eve of the Second World War. Submitted by Elizabeth Constance Raikes to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History January, 2019. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 1 Acknowledgements This thesis is dedicated to the late Professor Colin Platt (1934-2015), and those who go on being inspired by him and take heart from his encouragement. Without Colin Platt, this thesis would never have begun. Without the support of those in the present it would not have been completed. Thanks are due to my supervisor Professor Andrew Thompson for his thoroughness and insightful comments that have sharpened and focussed this work. Staffs at the University of Exeter Library, the British Library, the National Archives, the London Metropolitan Archives, City of London and the Archives Départementales La Corse du Sud have been particularly helpful at guiding me through the various systems, processes and care of resources to enable this thesis to benefit from a rich variety of sources. They are largely an unsung body of people but vital to researchers. Finally, I have taken advantage of the good nature of my husband, Graham, for proof reading numerous drafts and for accompanying me on our research visits to Corsica, although exploring Ajaccio whilst I spent hours in the archives was no great hardship. -
