Walking in the shadow of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks. MALHAM COVE & RIBBLESDALE The best scenery in the South Dales stretches out in front of you. Rolling hills, moorland, deeply eroded limestone pavements, high escarpments, waterfalls, wild valleys and places of sheer geological beauty, all make up the magnificent landscape you’ll encounter along the way. The huge rock amphitheatre of Malham Cove was created by a river drawing glacial melt water at the end of the last ice age. We’ll hike on the Pennine Way and follow in the footsteps of Edward Elgar. We’ll visit natural highlights such as Catrigg Force, the spectacular Malham Cove and walk in the shadow of the mighty peaks of Ingleborough and Whernside. From Giggleswick Scar above Settle there are panoramic views across to Lancashire’s Forest of Bowland, and from the moor above Stainforth we look across to the famous Pen Y Ghent, the ‘Hill of the Winds’. With more walks than days to do them, we can pick the best of this marvellous corner of England. Settle is the southern terminus of the Settle to Carlisle Railway which we’ll use to explore the wild country and experience the famous viaducts along the route – remarkable feats of Victorian civil engineering. The town also describes itself as, arguably, the best place in the world to enjoy fell walking and the great outdoors – we tend to agree! Some of the walks include up to 8 hours walking, although with no more ascent or descent than would be expected on a grade 6 holiday. WHAT'S INCLUDED Half board en-suite accommodation. Local transport to and from the trailheads. HOLIDAY GRADE Grade 6 This is a Grade 6 moderate holiday which includes full day walks with appreciable amounts of ascent and descent with walks in some remote areas. Paths are mostly good, but there may be some steep and rough ground. Walks will last up to 6 hours and could involve as much as 750m of ascent and descent and are likely to be at the upper level of ascent, descent, walking time and distance. See the Walks & Excursions section for more information. HOLIDAY ITINERARY Day Content Meals Location 1 Independent arrival at the Falcon Manor in Settle from D Settle 2pm. Diverse views extend over the Yorkshire Dales to the ‘Hill of Winds’ and to Lancashire’s Forest of Bowland. The walking programme may include a selection of walks from the following, which give an indication of the nature of the walking terrain and the format of the holiday. Ingleborough. Possibly the most challenging of the walks, but the finest of the famous Three Peaks walks. Travel on the Settle Carlisle Railway to the start of the walk from the Ribblehead Viaduct. The path up looks daunting from the start but the steep climb is soon over. The summit is flat and easily crossed. Descent is down past the Gaping Gill cavern (one of the largest underground chambers in Britain) then descending along the Dales Highway via Nick Pot cave and Sulber Nick walled bridlepath to Horton in Ribblesdale. About 9 miles, 670m ascent & descent. Malham Round. The Malham Round is rated as one of the best Yorkshire Dales’ great walks. Starting in the pretty village of Malham it follows the River Aire to the picturesque Janet’s Foss waterfall before visiting the geological wonder of Gordale Scar. You then climb onto a magnificent limestone plateau formed in the last ice age. We circle Malham Tarn, the highest lake in England and then return via the Pennine Way and the awe-inspring cliffs of Malham Cove. About 10.5 miles, 425m ascent & descent. Settle Circular. From our base in the market town of Settle this walk explores many interesting features of the area. We see the waterfalls of Catrigg and Stainforth Forces. We pass the Victoria and Jubilee Caves, which in prehistoric times sheltered bears and reindeer. There are characteristic limestone outcrops such as Attermire Scar. About 11 miles, 600m scent & descent. Each evening, your tour leader will discuss with you the programme for the following day.
