This booklet is written to help you to differentiate between dyslexia and learning disability. It is neither prescriptive nor exhaustive.
It is not only based on research on the neuro-physiological basis of dyslexia, but all examples are based on true-life experiences and told from the heart!
It provides an overview of what we know about dyslexia and learning disabilities, the difficulties experienced by students with dyslexia and appropriate school-based accommodations and modifications to assist them to achieve success. It also examines potential weaknesses in the current structure and hypothesizes about the benefits to a restructuring of our current screening, assessment and diagnostic techniques.

Dyslexia: Why the Confusion?
For the past 15 years I have been principal of a private school for students with dyslexia as well as executive director of the Canadian Dyslexia Association. According to the National Institutes of Mental Health, dyslexia is the most common learning disability. It accounts for 80% to 90% of all learning disabilities. Obviously dyslexia has a great impact in the classroom and in the home. I’ve received frequent requests for assistance from educational professionals and parents alike. People come to me with heartbreaking stories of struggle and frustration. Even medical and educational professionals have come to me in desperation to gain insight on their own child’s disorder. Teachers who simply aren’t given the access to the training necessary to help a dyslexic child to thrive. The confusion I observed surrounding Dyslexia was alarming.
