The literature review includes theoretical perspectives from interpersonal communication, the social construction of reality and o f self-identity, and transpersonal studies. Three emergent themes from six narrative interviews are discussed in regard to co-constructed constitutive interpretations of self-identity: (1) cultural stranger/insider standpoint, (2) worldview metaphors, (3) and recognition of a socially embedded self. The consultation narrative illustrates the constitution of identity in interaction with an other who is afforded the status of "professional" regarding the interaction itself. Like therapeutic interactions between self and health care practitioners, the interaction between consultant and the astrological information seeker is a context unusually sensitive to the information that makes self visible to the evolution of identity. Such interaction carries a cultural expectation of the constitutive nature and power of communication. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I owe a debt of gratitude to all the special people who supported me throughout this project, especially from the Department of Communication. I give my heartfelt "thanks" to Dr. Jin Brown, Professor of Communication, for his dedicated mentorship, fine mind, humor, "fix it" capability, and expertise in the discipline of Communication. He turned my academic attention toward the study of Communication during my undergraduate years, the study of which has become a passion for me equal to previous epistemological endeavors. I will always be grateful to Dr. Pamela McWherter, Assistant Professor of Communication, whose dedicated academic service and undying faith in me helped lay the foundation for this study. She encouraged me to follow an untried academic path in the discipline of Communication, so that I could incorporate my heart and soul into the process of knowledge and understanding creation. Her unique fiery passion for knowledge exploration, equality, and "waking y'all up" has continued to inspire me throughout this journey. Another special "thanks" goes to Dr. John Leipzig, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, who took the time to serve on my thesis committee. He offered his sharp wit and vast knowledge regarding the discipline of Communication to my work as well as his appropriate skepticism, being the "tribalized logical positivist" that he is. The mantra of Human Communication has become a deeply understood process through this work in meaning-making and will continue to inspire my academic career— all human reality is created, maintained, and transformed in human communication. One such belief system, the study and practice of astrology, is so specialized and technical in its practical application that individuals interested in utilizing this specialized form of inquiry must consult with an expert

  • ZIP DOBYNS (Astrology)
ZIP DOBYNS (Astrology) http://www.ccrsdodona.org/ [Note: These talks by Dr. Zipporah Dobyns were transcribed from audio cassettes by myself, Bill Wrobel. I also personally attended the sessions held largely at Zip’s Los Angeles house (the location of many of her local astrology Intensives). Being a “Virgo” astrologer, Zip much preferred the preciseness of her writing style than the “over-the- cuff” spontaneous “Gemini” speaking style. Zip passed away in mid-June 2003. Her daughter, Maritha Pottenger, has given permission to put these verbatim transcriptions (some slight edits) online as a tribute to Zip and her teachings. The material is quite excellent for the very reason of its impromptu spontaneous nature—more, as just given, the Gemini style or side of her nature than the written Virgo style or side of her nature. Of course I preferred her Gemini style! Even in those terms, I much prefer hearing Zip on cassette or in person than simply reading the transcripts of her Gemini style material. I understand that Zip would sometimes feel a bit frustrated with material from transcriptions of her workshops and talks because of its far more casual speaker style and would prefer to “clean up” the material in her Virgo mode! Be that as it may, I believe the reader will find great value in the material as given. Enjoy!] [Background bio information: Zip was born August 26, 1921, Chicago, Illinois at 9:48 pm CST. She earned a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Chicago in 1944, Phi Beta Kappa. Her graduate studies in anthropology were held at the University of Chicago and also the University of Arizona.

  • Fixed Stars Interview with Diana K. Rosenberg by Edith Hathaway, USA
Fixed Stars Interview with Diana K. Rosenberg By Edith Hathaway, USA ob Hand calls Diana K. Rosenberg “the leading authority on Fixed Stars.” She has spent the past 30 years researching the subject of Fixed Stars. Her primary interest R has always been research and teaching, rather than the consulting side of astrology. Her preferred astrological techniques outside of the realm of Fixed Stars include Uranian Astrology (90 Degree Dial, Planetary Pictures, etc.), Derived Houses, Planetary Nodes, and Solstice Points. Diana has been a resident of New York City her entire life, while my residence in NYC spanned only 7 years, and I moved westwards in the USA in Feb. 1983. Our paths first crossed in 1982 when I was a student in Diana’s Uranian Astrology classes in Manhattan, NY. From 1988 to the early 1990s I made a gradual shift from Uranian (tropical) to Vedic (sidereal) astrology, a subject Diana always intended to study, but Fixed Stars came to take up all of her time. She has always been fascinated with very ancient things, and the study of antiquity. A different portion of this interview, mainly on Fixed Stars, is being published simultaneously by ISAR Journal (Journal of the International Society for Astrological Research), both print and On-line versions. See http://www.isarastrology.com. This larger interview at Saptarishis covers only a few pages of the same material, but also much more from Diana on stars. It segues at times into a dialogue between us about Fixed stars, mundane astrology, the Vedic nakshatras, and the two zodiacs – tropical and sidereal (items #12 through 14), also about her life and birth chart, including my commentary on her Vedic chart, at her request (item #16).

  • A Mercury Retrograde Kind of Day Exploring Astrology in Contemporary New Age Spirituality and American Social Life
Correspondences 6, no. 1 (2018) 47–75 ISSN: 2053-7158 (Online) Special Issue: Ethnographies of the Esoteric correspondencesjournal.com A Mercury Retrograde Kind of Day Exploring Astrology in Contemporary New Age Spirituality and American Social Life Susannah Crockford E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Astrology is a feature of everyday conversation and the local spiritual scene in Sedona, Arizona, a small town renowned for its “vortexes”. As part of a variegated new age spirituality, astrology “works” in three main ways that are examined in this article. It is an explanatory model for misfortune; a symbolic system; and a source of epistemic capital. A series of well-known ethnographic studies of African divination are used to contextualise astrology as an American form of divination. Based on almost two years of participant observation fieldwork in Northern Arizona, the ethnographic material presented in this article illuminates the question of why astrology continues to be a relevant and useful practice for Americans, despite its widespread rejection by political and scientific authorities. Keywords Astrology; United States of America; Ethnography; Esotericism; New Age Spirituality; Divination © 2018 Susannah Crockford This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License. 48 Crockford / Correspondences 6, no. 1 (2018) 47–75 Introduction: Mercury Retrograde In the summer of 2012 in the Uptown district of Sedona, Arizona, in a small apart- ment with walls lined with bookcases of CDs by the Grateful Dead and other 1960s artists, Jack was holding a tutorial class in Western astrology. Two cats inhabited the room; Buddha, a fifteen-year old with a kidney problem who sat almost motionless casting a disdainful look over the room, and Kama, a very playful kitten who spent the evening jumping around the furniture and disrupting the altar of candles and crystals on the floor.

Most people know what their Sun sign is in Western Astrology, but very few know about Vedic Astrology, the subject of this report. Even people who have only the slightest smattering of knowledge about astrology want to know what is Vedic Astrology and how it differs from the Western Astrology that they are accustomed to. To answer these questions I would first like to very briefly explain a little about Vedic Astrology and how it is different from its Western cousin. Vedic versus Western Astrology The Vedas are the oldest scriptures known to exist, being well over 5,000 years old.
