  • The Notion of Song, Identities, Discourses, and Power
The Notion of Song, Identities, Discourses, and Power: Bridging Songs with Literary Texts to Enhance Students’ Interpretative Skills Elroy Alister Esdaille Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Elroy Alister Esdaille All Rights Reserved Abstract Sometimes students struggle to interpret literary texts because some of these texts do not lend themselves to the deduction of the interpretative processes with which they are familiar, but the same is not true when students pull interpretations from songs. Is it possible that students’ familiarity with songs might enable them to connect a song with a book and aid interpretation that way? This study attempted to explore the possibility of bridging songs to literary texts in my Community College English classroom, to ascertain if or how the use of song can support or extend students’ interpretive strategies across different types of texts. I investigated how songs might work as a bridge to other texts, like novels, and, if the students use songs as texts, to what extent do the students develop and hone their interpretative skills? Because of this, how might including songs as texts in English writing or English Literature curriculum contribute to the enhancement of students’ writing? The students’ responses disclosed that the songs appealed to their cognition and memories and helped them to interpret and write about the novels they read. Moreover, the students’ responses revealed that pairing or matching songs with novels strengthened interpretation of the book in a plethora of ways, such as meta-message deduction, applying contexts, applying comparisons, and examining thematic correlations.

  • United Methodist Advocacy in Pennsylvania November 30, 2018
United Methodist Advocacy in Pennsylvania November 30, 2018 The 2017-18 two-year legislative session in Pennsylvania concluded on November 30. All unfinished legislation ceases to exist. Any old legislation that is to be perpetuated needs to be reintroduced as new legislation in the new session beginning January 1, 2019. For practical intents and purposes, legislative activity ended in October. In the General Assembly, November was a time for administrative housekeeping and identifying party leadership for the coming session. Almost one-third of the space in this month’s report has to do with the changes to the General Assembly. For some, this might be tedious. For those who need this information, it will serve as a good starting point for identifying key leadership—though many legislative committee chairs will not be filled until the beginning of the upcoming session. Of course, outside the General Assembly, activity continues in Harrisburg. I have included several items that I found to be of interest. For those who want to receive legislative alerts and calls to action on political issues for the faith community, I refer you to the Pennsylvania Council of Churches online information—visit their website at: pachurches.org. Go to the “Advocacy” page, accessible through the menu at the top of the homepage. Here one can link to further information or subscribe to advocacy action notifications. Don’t forget the United Methodist Advocacy in Pennsylvania website: umadvocacypa.blogspot.com Furthermore, save the date for the weekend of May 18, 2019. We will be conducting a Faith and Politics Conference. The location will be Harrisburg, PA.

  • Copy of Letter to Administration Re Frack Public Health Study (002).Docx
March 17th, 2021 The Honorable Tom Wolf Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 508 Main Capitol Building Harrisburg, PA 17120 RE: Request for Action Dear Governor Wolf, Thank you for your recent support of the Delaware River Basin Commission’s efforts to protect our natural resources and drinking water supply. Please consider this correspondence as a formal request for your immediate action in response to the ongoing harm to the public’s health and well-being due to hydraulic fracturing. On March 4, 2021, the Environmental Health News published the results of an illuminating investigation that links hydraulic fracturing operations and exposure to toxic chemicals. This pilot study included five families residing in Westmoreland and Washington Counties, all living within miles of multiple hydraulic fracturing wells, pipelines, and compressor stations. Each family was monitored over 9 weeks through scientific data collection of urine, air, and water sampling. These samples were then analyzed using the best available technology to look for forty of the most common chemicals found in the emissions from fracking sites. The initial outcomes are alarming in terms of the effects on the long-term health and safety of these residents. Benzene and butylcyclohexane were among the chemicals found in both the drinking water and air samples. Breakdown products for the chemicals ethylbenzene, styrene, and toluene were found in the bodies of children living near fracking operations. For example, a nine-year-old participant showed levels of these harmful chemicals up to ninety-one times as high as the average American and substantially higher than levels seen in the average adult cigarette smoker.

Dear Residents of SD-44: Over the past month my office, like many of my colleagues, has been flooded with calls and emails from frustrated constituents who desperately want to register for the vaccine, but the current complicated process has proved difficult to navigate. We have taken on the task of helping to register many of our senior citizens who are unable to sign-up for a number of reasons. Despite our calls for a statewide database that would allow our constituents to register for their COVID-19 vaccination, we have been told that restrictions of our Commonwealth do not permit us to create a statewide database of available appointments. Senator Lindsey Williams, Senator Maria Collett, Senator Amanda Cappelletti, and I will be introducing companion legislation in the Senate that will allow Pennsylvanians to register themselves and their loved ones as willing recipients of the COVID-19 vaccine, provide proof of eligibility for a risk category, and provide how far they are willing to travel to receive their vaccination. For example, under this legislation, you and your spouse or significant other can register at the same time, add any risk categories such as smoking or pre-existing medical conditions, note first responder or essential worker status, and delineate how far you are willing to travel to secure a vaccine. Vaccine providers will then have to register to access this database and give priority to these individuals in making appointments available. This legislation will reduce frustration, eliminate the need to spend hours searching for appointments and permit prioritization of vaccine distribution to our most vulnerable citizens.
