The Dragonflies of Bramshill Site of Special Scientific Interest Freshwater Habitats Trust Author Ken Crick Forward Bramshill Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is a Flagship Pond Site. Part of a network of the very best of Britain’s ponds; sites of exceptional importance for freshwater wildlife and some of our finest freshwater habitats. The Flagship sites can be a single special pond, or more commonly group of ponds, selected because they support rich, often irreplaceable, communities and species at risk of extinction. They represent some of the least impacted, most diverse pond habitats remaining in the country. Many of our nation’s most beautiful and biodiverse waterbodies have degraded irrevocably, and it’s critically important that the remaining sites are well protected and well managed. ABSTRACT Due to the destruction of its primary habitats, the West Palaearctic libellulid Orthe trum coerulescens has suffered much decline in central Europe. However, at the re gional scale it has survived in a variety of secondary habitat, such as draining ditches. In order to find adequate measures for its conservation and promotion, habitat use and habitat recognition of 0. coerulescens were investigated by description and ex perimentation at fenland ditches in a small nature reserve in the Swiss Plateau. This breeding habitat, which harbours a viable population, had been restored and main tained for 25 years. The most densely populated sites comprised small ditches be tween 40-70 em wide, with rather sparse vegetation of narrow-leaved plants and that had parts of the water surface uncovered; the peaty, mud ground was partly overgrown with submerged pads of stonewort (Chara spp.). Water was mainly sup plied by seepage springs with a mixture of local slow flow that were hardly recog nizable and shallow sites, which were used for oviposition. In hot summer spells the water temperature could exceed 30°C. Some freezing occurred in winter, but the mud was permanently ice-free. The development of the breeding population, which comprised more than 200 individuals in 2006, was followed over two subsequent years. -

Dragonflies in Bracknell Forest Borough: Report 2014
Dragonflies in Bracknell Forest Borough: Report 2014 This report is in two parts and replaces an interim report issued on 23 September 2014. In the first part we report on the dragonflies and damselflies seen on the wing during 2014. In the second half we take a look at a major new publication – a new atlas of British dragonflies which appeared in May 2014 - and summarise its content in relation to our local sites and species. The 2014 Flying Season During the 2014 flying season, 27 species (see Appendix) were recorded on the wing in the Borough, with evidence of breeding for 19 species. The 2014 flying season followed the wettest winter (2013/4) since records began in 1766. This was followed by one of the mildest springs on record. There were long spells of warm, sunny weather during June and July, with occasional torrential thunderstorms which kept water levels topped up. The sunny weather continued into the first week of August. At the end of the week temperatures dropped by several degrees and a period of much cooler, changeable weather took over, lasting throughout the month; August 2014 was the coolest for 21 years. A warm, dry, settled period of weather re-established at the start of September and lasted into the first two days of October. The remainder of the month was changeable, but ended with the warmest Halloween on record. Overall 2014 was the warmest year since records began in 1659, every month except August being warmer than average. Also 2014 was the fourth wettest since 1910, although September was the driest ever. -
The Butterflies & Dragonflies of Knoll Gardens 2018
THE BUTTERFLIES & DRAGONFLIES OF KNOLL GARDENS 2018 INTRODUCTION Changes to the layout of the Gardens are still ongoing and so the modified map used for 2017 was used again this year. The route established in previous years for monitoring remained the same, along with the formats for recording and reporting for ease and reliability of comparison. As in previous years, all results have been entered onto the ‘Living Record’ database. TABLES & RECORD SHEETS TABLES Table 1. is a list of the possible butterfly, damselfly and dragonfly species that could appear within the Gardens, along with their abbreviations used on the record sheets. It shows those species that have appeared within the Gardens over the seasons. (28 species of Butterfly & 20 of Odonata.) They are highlighted in shades of red, amber and green. Red = Seen for the 1st time or the return of an infrequent visitor. Amber = Seen in previous years and 2018 Green = Seen in previous years but not 2018 Tables 2., 3. and 4. compare the performances of the species, showing those that made an improvement and those that have fared less well for: butterflies, damselflies and dragonflies respectively. RECORD SHEETS The modified map of the Gardens was once again used to record the weekly sightings of the butterflies and odonata, with their abbreviations positioned where they were seen, with butterflies in black and odonata in red. (Annex (iv) 1 – 18). Charts were produced from these figures, showing the number of species and their abundance for each week of the season. These weekly count results were entered on to a spreadsheet, showing the flight period and abundance for each species throughout the season. -

Based http://jinsectscience.oxfordjournals.org/ on this concept, a field study was conducted on the niche partitioning of three territorial conge- neric species of skimmers (Anisoptera: Libellulidae) in Northeast Algeria during the breeding season of 2011. According to their size, there is a descending hierarchy between Orthetrum ni- tidinerve Sélys, O. chrysostigma (Burmeister), and O. coerulescens anceps (Schneider). After being marked and surveyed, the two latter species had the same breeding behavior sequence. Knowing that they had almost the same size, such species could not co-occur in the same habitat according to the competitive exclusion principle. The spatial distribution of the three species was by guest on August 24, 2015 investigated at two different microhabitats, and it was found that these two species were actually isolated at this scale. O. chrysostigma and O. nitidinerve preferred open areas, while O. c. anceps occurred in highly vegetated waters. This study highlights the role of microhabitat in community structure as an important niche axis that maintains closely related species in the same habitat. While these insects make the top 5 in beloved bugs along with ladybugs and butterflies, dragon and damselflies are efficient and ruthless killers. Their order, Odonata, which means the “toothed one” in Greek, refers to dismembering their prey adeptly with their mandibles and eating them while still in the air. They are represented in human culture on artifacts such as pottery, rock paintings, and Art Nouveau decor. Their bright colors and agile flight are admired in the poetry of Alfred Lord Tennyson and the prose of H. E. Bates. They are used in traditional medicine in Japan and China, and caught for food in Indonesia. They are symbols of courage, strength, and happiness in Japan, but seen as sinister in European folklore.
