Galette des rois On 13th january 2013 at 3 pm at the Mille Club, you are invited by the Mairie of La Roche Canillac to join in the traditonal New Year celebraton : Galette des rois In 2013, centenaries of the births of : Boccacio (1313) Le Nôtre and La Rochefoucauld (1613) Diderot (1713) Wagner, Delacroix, Verdi, Livingstone (1813) Britten, Camus, Césaire, Charlotte Delbo (1913) To illustrate each newsletter, we have chosen a miniature from the 15 th century calendar, Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. January is the only one in the series to depict an indoor scene : a banquet taking place on New Year’s day, when people traditonally came to ofer their wishes and gifs to the Seigneur. Jean de Berry, dressed in blue and wearing a fur hat, is seated in front of a freplace and is invitng friends and family to come forward --- as shown by the inscripton Aproche + Aproche. Above the freplace is a red silk canopy with his coat of arms and the back of the paintng shows a scene from the Trojan war. Several of the Duke’s pets are represented here : two little dogs are playing on the table and a white greyhound in the bottom right hand corner is being fed by one of the servants.
