Natalie Masri, [email protected] LOCATIONS Friday afternoon check-in to the dorms will take place at Venable Hall which is accessible off of McCormick Road on 80 Newcomb South. The academic program will take place in Monroe Hall, which is on McCormick Road. The Friday evening reception and Saturday evening banquet will take place in Garrett Hall, directly across the street from Monroe Hall, off of McCormick Road. The Academical Village tour is very close to the conference buildings. The Corner shopping district is a 10 minute walk through campus and is located on University Avenue. GPS coordinates: Monroe Hall 38.034880, -78.506153 Venable House 38.034448, -78.508057 Garrett Hall 38.034106, -78.505499 DIRECTIONS The University of Virginia is approximately 120 miles southwest of Washington, D.C and is easily accessible by airplane, train, bus and car. Driving from Washington, DC and areas north: 95 South, 66 West Exit 43A (Route 29 South toward Gainesville/Warrenton), continue on 29 South until you enter Charlottesville, proceed directly south on Rt. 29/Emmet Street (passing the University Hall basketball arena on the right) to the light at Business 250. Take a left at the light onto University Avenue. Turn right onto McCormick Road. Driving from the Richmond area, follow signs to the University of Virginia Information Center, exiting from Rt. 29/250 Bypass to Ivy Road/Route 250 Business East. Turn right off the exit ramp. You will pass the U.Va. Information Center, proceed through four traffic lights (the last one is at the intersection with Rugby Road). Turn right onto McCormick Road. 1 Czechoslovak Society of Arts & Sciences (SVU) 2015 Regional Conference Information University of Virginia Driving from the CHO Airport, take second exit in traffic circle onto Airport Road, turn right on 29 South, continue on 29 South until you enter Charlottesville, proceed directly south on Rt. 29/Emmet Street (passing the University Hall basketball arena on the right) to the light at Business 250. Take a left at the light onto University Avenue. Turn right onto McCormick Road. From Amtrak train station (walking directions), exit station parking lot and turn left on West Main Street, you will come to the U.Va. Hospital on the left, turn slight right onto University Avenue (same as Main Street), turn left onto Hospital Drive, turn right through the Academical Village, continue straight until you come to McCormick Road. PARKING For those arriving Friday afternoon, parking enforcement is in effect until 5:00 p.m. For Friday afternoon, it is recommended that you park in the Emmet Street Parking Garage at 400 Emmet Street South, Charlottesville ($2.00 per hour). You can move your vehicle to other locations after hours and on Saturday/Sunday. Free weekend parking areas (please read signs carefully): • Behind the Alderman Library on 160 McCormick Road • Along McCormick Road next to Alderman Library and across the street from the chapel • Just past Monroe Hall, turn right off of McCormick Road. • C1 Parking Lot, drive past Monroe Hall and the dorms, turn left on Cabell Drive and follow the road back behind the building. Many parking spaces are available here. HOUSING SVU has 20 rooms reserved in U.Va. dorms. Venable House and Davis House are located at 80 Newcomb South. Short-term parking for unloading is allowed. Check-in on Friday and Saturday afternoon will be conducted by U.Va. Housing staff at Venable House. Check out will also take place in Venable House with Housing staff. They are headquartered nearby at Page House. If you are scheduled to arrive after 8:00 p.m. please call (434) 924-4479, and a staff member will be glad to meet you at the Conference Services office (Page House) to check you in. The dorm rooms are a short walk to Monroe Hall and Garrett Hall. The rooms have cold air conditioning so please prepare accordingly. They each have private bathrooms. Bring towels and toiletries. ACADEMIC PROGRAM Conference registration will take place on Saturday and Sunday in Monroe Hall. All academic presentations and formal meetings will take place in the Monroe Hall classrooms. If you plan to have a slideshow presentation, please bring a flash drive for plugging into the classroom computers. 2 Czechoslovak Society of Arts & Sciences (SVU) 2015 Regional Conference Information University of Virginia AREA DINING OPTIONS The Corner retail district on University Avenue has historically served the University community for nearly two centuries. A closer lunch option is in the lower level of Newcomb Hall (U.Va. student union building), adjacent and down the stairs from Monroe Hall. For those wanting to venture further, we recommend dining on the Downtown Mall, a pedestrian mall filled with restaurants and entertainment options. TOURS Friend of SVU, Rob Masri will be providing a free walking tour of the Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of the University’s historic center. This tour will take approximately one hour. Note that the Rotunda and other areas are under construction this summer. Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson (another UNESCO World Heritage Site), provides group tours which take approximately two hours. We will carpool those who have signed up for the tour, which is a 15 minute drive from the university. EXTENDED STAY OPTIONS Please notify U.Va. Housing if you would like to extend your stay beyond Sunday. Further afield is the Blue Ridge Parkway and many hiking options. Humpback Rocks is a perennial favorite of locals and visitors alike. Approximately a 1.5 hours drive away is the historic Czech and Slovak immigrant community in Prince George County, Virginia.
