I've experienced the highs LinkedIn of being sworn in as senator and delivering my first speech and also lows of the MH17 disaster. July started with two days of "Senator school" in Email Canberra with my new Senate Colleagues. Governor General Peter Cosgrove presided over the swearing in of myself and the other newly elected Senators. Trade agreement A highlight of my first week was a visit by Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, and the signing of a landmark JapanAustralia Economic Partnership Agreement. It is a great opportunity for the WA economy to grow and employ more West Australians. This is a great example of the Coalition government getting on with the job of governing and making decisions in the best interest of our nation World record Men of the Trees Last week I joined Christian Porter and Ken Wyatt and near 2,200 Western Australians at Whiteman Park in an attempt to break the world record for most trees planted in under one hour. To reach our goal, each participant was given 60 trees to plant across the hour. A big thank you and congratulations to Men of the Trees for organising such a fantastic event. Well done! The Forrest Review Today the Prime Minister launched Andrew Forrest's ambitious report to Government with recommendations to close the Indigenous employment gap. Whatever results flow from this report, I congratulate Andrew Forrest for his efforts and passion. It is wonderful to see the return of robust public policy debate in our nation. The weeks ahead Next week I am heading to WA’s South West to visit a wide range of local industries. Later in the year I will also be heading east to Kalgoorlie and the North West of WA to see our nation’s economic engine room.
