Charges of Ukrainian Meddling? a Russian
Charges of Ukrainian Meddling? A Russian Operation,The Trump U.S. Intelligence Says Trump Impeached Senatorsʼ Reactions How Everyone Voted Whatʼs Next? Impeachment Moscow has run a yearslong operation to blame Ukraine for its own 2016 election interference. Republicans have used similar talking points to defend President Trump in impeachment proceedings. By Julian E. Barnes and Matthew Rosenberg Published Nov. 22, 2019 Updated Nov. 26, 2019 WASHINGTON — Republicans have sought for weeks amid the impeachment inquiry to shift attention to President Trump’s demands that Ukraine investigate any 2016 election meddling, defending it as a legitimate concern while Democrats accuse Mr. Trump of pursuing fringe theories for his benefit. The Republican defense of Mr. Trump became central to the impeachment proceedings when Fiona Hill, a respected Russia scholar and former senior White House official, added a harsh critique during testimony on Thursday. She told some of Mr. Trump’s fiercest defenders in Congress that they were repeating “a fictional narrative.” She said that it likely came from a disinformation campaign by Russian security services, which also propagated it. In a briefing that closely aligned with Dr. Hill’s testimony, American intelligence officials informed senators and their aides in recent weeks that Russia had engaged in a yearslong campaign to essentially frame Ukraine as responsible for Moscow’s own hacking of the 2016 election, according to three American officials. The briefing came as Republicans stepped up their defenses of Mr. Trump in the Ukraine affair. The revelations demonstrate Russia’s persistence in trying to sow discord among its adversaries — and show that the Kremlin apparently succeeded, as unfounded claims about Ukrainian interference seeped into Republican talking points. -

January 20, 2021 Attorney Grievance Committee Supreme Court of the State of New York Appellate Division, First Judicial Department 180 Maiden Lane New York, New York 10038 (212) 401-0800 Email: [email protected] Re: Professional Responsibility Investigation of Rudolph W. Giuliani, Registration No. 1080498 Dear Members of the Committee: Lawyers Defending American Democracy (“LDAD”) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization the purpose of which is to foster adherence to the rule of law. LDAD’s open letters and statements calling for accountability on the part of public officials have garnered the support of 6,000 lawyers across the country, including many in New York.1 LDAD and the undersigned attorneys file this ethics complaint against Rudolph W. Giuliani because Mr. Giuliani has violated multiple provisions of the New York Rules of Professional Conduct while representing former President Donald Trump and the Trump Campaign. This complaint is about law, not politics. Lawyers have every right to represent their clients zealously and to engage in political speech. But they cross ethical boundaries—which are equally boundaries of New York law—when they invoke and abuse the judicial process, lie to third parties in the course of representing clients, or engage in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation in or out of court. By these standards, Mr. Giuliani’s conduct should be investigated, and he should be sanctioned immediately while the Committee investigates. As lead counsel for Mr. Trump in all election matters, Mr. Giuliani has spearheaded a nationwide public campaign to convince the public and the courts of massive voter fraud and a stolen presidential election. -

The News Around Us Jan 31 2021 Biden Sasses Fox News' Peter Doocy Over Question About Putin Lindsey Ellefson TheWrap Joe Biden peter Doocy President Joe Biden got sassy with Fox News' Peter Doocy Tuesday when the White House correspondent asked him about a recent call with Russian president Vladimir Putin. "Mr. President," called out Doocy, who covered Biden during the 2020 presidential campaign. "What did you talk to Vladimir Putin about?" Biden quipped, "You. He sends his best!" Other assembled journalists laughed as Biden put on his face mask and exited the briefing. The moment came one day after Biden called on Doocy during a different briefing, saying, "I know he always asks me tough questions and he always has an edge to them, but I like him anyway, so go ahead and ask the question." Amid a series of staffing and scheduling shakeups, Fox News announced earlier this month that White House correspondent John Roberts would be leaving the West Wing to host his own hour-long program on the cable network. Doocy was announced as the channel's new White House correspondent shortly thereafter. He joins colleague Kristin Fisher in the briefing room. Prior to covering Biden's campaign for Fox News, Doocy worked on coverage of the Democratic primary field. He first joined Fox News as a general assignment reporter in 2009 just after graduating from Villanova University. An equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccine must include noncitizens Rep. Raúl M. Enclosure: Certain Documents Produced by Lev Parnas to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (“Committee”) requested on September 30, 2019, that Lev Parnas, an associate of Rudy Giuliani, President Trump’s personal attorney, voluntarily produce records as part of the House of Representatives’ impeachment inquiry. On October 3, Mr. Parnas’ then-attorney, John Dowd, communicated to the Committee that Mr. Parnas would not comply with the request. On October 9, Mr. Parnas was detained pursuant to an arrest warrant from the Southern District of New York. The next day, on October 10, the Committee issued a duly-authorized subpoena to compel Mr. Parnas to produce records pertinent to the impeachment inquiry. On October 30, after securing new counsel, Mr. Parnas informed the Committee that he intended to comply with the subpoena. Mr. Parnas recently received court authorization to share with the Committee materials that were seized from him by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. He also produced to the Committee other material in his possession and continues to provide material responsive to the subpoena on a rolling basis. A preliminary review of Mr. Parnas’ production, a voluminous record of data extracted primarily from one of his personal cell phones, further corroborates the findings and evidence related to the President’s scheme, which was laid out in the Trump-Ukraine Impeachment Inquiry Report, released by the Committee on December 3. As an example of the relevancy to the impeachment inquiry of the evidence that you are receiving today, attached here are some documents pertinent to the President’s Ukraine effort that we identified in our initial review of Mr. -
Ukraine's On-Going Reform Process Progress and Challenges Since Euromaidan
Briefing July 2017 Ukraine's on-going reform process Progress and challenges since Euromaidan SUMMARY On 12-13 July 2017, European Council President, Donald Tusk, Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, and Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko, will meet in Kyiv for the 19th EU-Ukraine summit. Ukraine's reform process is to feature prominently on the agenda. The ratification of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement by the Dutch Parliament in May 2017, and the commencement of visa-free travel for Ukrainians in June illustrate the active and visible role the EU has taken in shaping Ukraine's future. Since the 2014 Euromaidan revolution, Ukraine's reform efforts have made unprecedented progress under difficult circumstances. The country has improved transparency, implemented anti-corruption measures and reduced its dependence on Russian gas. The EU, international institutions, individual countries and Ukrainian civil society actors have all participated in propagating, funding and monitoring these changes. External leverage and incentives have proved vital in ensuring that the government moves ahead with reforms, but internal challenges still pose a threat to future progress, including the actual implementation of the laws passed. Strong oligarchic influence and a lack of political unity continue to hamper key changes. Significant issues to watch in Ukraine's ongoing reforms include the election of an all-new Supreme Court as well as the creation of a special Anti-Corruption Court. In this briefing: Summary The main players in Ukrainian reform EU assistance to Ukraine Major achievements and challenges Main references EPRS | European Parliamentary Research Service Author: Naja Bentzen with Jessica Parks Members' Research Service PE 608.632 EN EPRS Ukraine's on-going reform process Key players in Ukrainian reform The February 2014 Euromaidan revolution started as a grassroots movement, but a number of nations and large institutions have come to support change alongside local civil society groups. -
