ou have probably heard the catchphrase “same same but different”. Perhaps you Y have seen it on a t-shirt. No matter, it is quite an accurate way to describe the Rolex 24 in 2019. The venue was the same. So was the timing of the event. So what was different? Quite a lot as it turns out. 2019 marks the first year the entire field is using Michelin rubber and the Michelin corporate pres- ence for the season opener was very much in evi- dence. The Michelin deal with IMSA also led to the re-branding of Friday’s 4 hour enduro, now called the . conjures up distinct images of different cars and their power plants. But what does it all really mean? Most of us have the basics down, like the first two numbers being the overarching series of the en- gine, followed by a B for some reason, and then the displacement. TU, or simply T these days, stands for technical update, but what about all of those other numbers? And where do they derive the meanings for the engine series number and the various letters to begin with? If you’ve ever pondered these ques- tions, read on. For what we estimate to be roughly the previous four decades, BMW has used the same basic nam- ing scheme. A number of resources provide visual breakdowns with legends and keys that explain what each character in the sequence means, but it’s easy to get lost in the details. The grounds were in great condition. The grass was obviously well watered and proved to be a near perfect sur- face for the big display of cars and mo- tor bikes.

We could have done with some shade though but that is just a small gripe. There was no denying it was a perfect autumn’s day for such an event.

K, be cool. Try not to look too excited”! I kept repeating those words to myself as I walked O into Rolfe Classic BMW. It worked. Mostly. I was the lucky one given the task of looking after the F13 M6 for a couple of days. The main reason was to get it to and from Wheels 2019 (see the event report elsewhere in this issue) where the M6 was the feature car in our club’s line-up. There are plenty of reviews online and in print so I’m not going to do one here—I just wanted to jot down some of my driving impressions. Where do I start? With a ridiculously huge 412kW of power and 680Nm of torque, the M6 is smack in su- percar territory. Make no mistake, when you want to, the M6 is truly ballistic. The power delivery is impres- sive. Once the engine reaches its peak torque, not far above idle, it just keeps going into the sunset. It is a big car, no doubt. Behind the wheel you’d ex- pect a car as big and substantial as the M6 to be heavy, indirect and somewhat cumbersome. Impres- sively, it’s anything but. After only a minute or two be- hind the wheel, it seemed to shrink around me. The M6 is a car of two characters. With all the settings in “Comfort” mode, it is a relatively comfortable and spacious cruiser. Set it in “Sport+” mode and you will be astonished at the delivery of seamless torque and acceleration with handling to match. It becomes a hard-edged monster! That said, my overriding impression is that the M6 is nothing short of a sensational GT car in the true sense.

One that would easily con- sume the kilometres with ease. All that power on tap and yet you are cosseted in utter luxury the whole time. How I would have loved this thing on my drive to and from the Australian GP in Melbourne from Canberra. It’s the forte of a car such as this. It was a somewhat sad mo- ment when I had to return the key on the Monday morning. I truly enjoyed the M6 and can’t thank Rolfe Classic BMW and BMW Aus- tralia for making the car available to us for Wheels. I wonder what’s in store for next year? CR
