Message from Fr Paul Dear Friends Today’s Collect is a favourite of mine: ‘….give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and to put on the whole armour of light, now in this mortal life…’. This year it speaks more powerfully than ever into the world’s chaos and uncertainty, reminding us that we are people who can, despite everything, live and walk in the light of Christ. It is the Light of Christ, which we prepare to celebrate at Christmas (yes, even in 2020!). And the season of Advent which begins today points us to that light. It points us also to the great hope we have in Christ’s Incarnation at Christmas and the time when He shall return and come again in all his glory. I am very pleased to say that at the time of writing we are able to plan to be back in church from next Sunday 6 December, the Second Sunday in Advent, which is also our Patronal Festival.

We are delighted that our own Bishop-designate and episcopal vicar for the Dorchester area Gavin Collins will be presiding for us, for the first time since he joined the Diocese. We sincerely hope you will soon feel settled and be able to flourish here. Ministry these days is undoubtedly pressurised but there are good resources in the Diocese to support and help you, and this leaflet is an introduction to some of them. Clearly your gifts are – humanly speaking – the most valuable resources we have. We are therefore committed to offering you the best training opportunities, personal support and encouragement that we can. The Church of England is of course a fairly ‘flat’ organisation and this is a large diocese, but the Area Deans, Archdeacons and Bishops are all committed to your wellbeing, and welcome your being in touch. Naturally you will want to take responsibility for your own flourishing as well. You may well have a spiritual director, cell group, long-term friends, and others who accompany you on your journey. You may also have particular interests, both inside and beyond ministry, that sustain you and give you life. All of that is excellent; we just want the best for you. In these early stages of moving here, your Archdeacon is best placed to help you and make any connections you need. Within the first six months you will see your Area Dean, Archdeacon and Bishops, all of whom are there to help you ‘land’ safely and well. I hope this leaflet will help you (and your spouse if you are married) to understand a little more of the Diocese and the resources available.

We wish to express our confidence in Martyn Percy. We Know him in our various capacities, as a man of consistently good character, an exceptional scholar, a respected public servant, and an outstanding Christian leader. We do not speculate on the reasons why some members of the Governing Body of Christ Church wish to go to such extreme lengths to destroy the reputation of their Dean and to break his spirit. But we do know that : • The recent letter is the latest episode in a sustained campaign against the Dean led by senior members of the college Governing Body since his appointment. • The specific allegations against Martyn Percy have changed over time, but each allegation has been disproved. In August of last year Dean Percy was wholly exonerated after an extensive investigation by Sir Andrew Smith, a retired High Court judge. - 1 - • The signatories of the letter are far from objective. Several of them were revealed by Sir Andrew to have employed devious methods and offensive language in their efforts to breaK his resolve, and some will be parties to an Employment Tribunal to be heard next year.

Live comedy isn’t viewed as being equal to other art forms by funding bodies across the UK — the same funding bodies responsible for distributing this week's £1.57 billion support package. This is despite comedy being a grassroots creative industry, which is accessible and inclusive to all, no matter your income, where you live, or your sense of humour. Ticket prices are cheaper than almost any other artform, and comedy takes place in every nation and region of the country, in dedicated spaces but also in pubs, music venues, and theatres in every town and city. We believe that comedy is art and should be treated as such. As fans, audience members, and those who work in live comedy, we therefore ask: 1.
