Development program confirmed for LMP1

Porsche returns to Le Mans in 2014

Stuttgart. Porsche returns to Le Mans with a works-run LMP1 sports prototype. The first outing of the com- pletely new developed race car is planned for the year 2014. With 16 overall victories, Porsche is the most successful manufacturer in Le Mans. The most recent win was in 1998 with the GT1.

“Motorsport was always an essential part of the Porsche brand,” emphasizes Matthias Müller, President of the Executive Board at Porsche AG. “So for us it was only a matter of time before we returned as a factory to the top league of racing. Porsche’s successes in Le Mans are unrivalled. We want to follow up on this with the 17th outright victory.”

With the RS Spyder sports prototype that was run with great success from 2006 to 2008 by the factory- backed Penske Racing team in the USA and to 2010 by several customer teams worldwide, Porsche has set the benchmark recently in the LMP2 category. “With the RS Spyder we proved that our motorsport en- gineers in Weissach are at the forefront,” says Wolfgang Hatz, Board Member for Research and Develop- ment at Porsche AG. “For instance, we were the first to run a high-revving race engine with direct fuel injec- tion, DFI, setting new standards in performance and efficiency. Recently, with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, we adopted a completely new drive technology for racing purposes and achieved a considerable reduction in consumption.”

Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport, is already prepared for one of the most challenging develop- ment programs in the company’s history. “We’re looking forward to the task of developing new technologies and to continue on with the success of the Porsche RS Spyder. After the conclusion of our works- supported sports prototype program in the we have kept up with the latest tech- nological advances. Now we will begin with detailed research in order to evaluate the various concept alter- natives for our new car. These obviously depend on how the regulations for the year 2014 look in detail. In principle, these regulations are interesting for us because the integration of our hybrid technology in the ve- hicle concept is one possible option.”

Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood claimed the first overall victory for Porsche in 1970 with the legen- dary 917 short-tail. The 16th and by now last overall win was secured by Laurent Aiello, Stéphane Ortelli and Allan McNish in 1998 with the 911 GT1. In the years 2008 and 2009, the Porsche RS Spyder sports prototype won the title in the LMP2 category. 6 Absaroka Arrow Aug/Sep 2011

One Million Visitors To The Porsche Museum New visitor record since opening . The museum of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has passed the million visitor mark just two and a half years after opening: Today, museum director Achim Stejskal welcomed not just one, but 13 school children from India as jubilee guests. "We are very pleased to have been able to surprise these In- dian boys and girls from Mumbai," explained Achim Stejskal. "Almost 35 percent of our visitors are guests from other countries. Fascination for the Porsche brand and its history continues undiminished, all around the world." Museum director Achim Stejskal invited the class from Mumbai to take a look behind the scenes: In the mu- seum workshop, which is not normally accessible to visitors, the school children were able to take a seat in a 1954 Spyder. At the end of their visit, the young jubilee guests received a very special sur- prise: The Porsche Museum is to support their school project. The boys and girls construct a well in a vil- lage close to their school. Since its opening on 31 January 2009, the Porsche Museum has provided more than 5,100 tours through the 5,600 m2 exhibition and hosted ten special exhibitions. Many celebrities from all over the world, includ- ing Jerry Seinfeld, Paris Hilton, Jamiroquai, Robby Naish, Udo Lindenberg and Peter Maffay have also taken an interest in this historic vehicle collection on Porscheplatz. Tickets sold to date would stretch a total of 150 km from Stuttgart to Lake Constance. Furthermore, since then more than 300 classics from the mu- seum's collection have been travelling the world as rolling brand ambassadors, attending historic racing and classic car events. Whitsun sees the Porsche Museum opening exclusively for its visitors with the current special exhibition " - Pioneer of the Hybrid Drive" running until Whit Monday, 13 June 2011. The Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 6 pm. Entry costs € 8, € 4 for concessions. Children under the age of 14 go free when accompanied by an adult. Tour to Red Lodge

It started out as a beautiful day. After bleak and rainy days Once back in sunny Red Lodge the group gathered at Red Lodge these past few weeks the prospect of a nice weekend was Pizza for some lunch. New members, Doug Oakes and his wife looking pretty good for our Absaroka Porsche Club’s drive Cheri from Roberts, were able to join us. They unfortunately over the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway and the Beartooth missed the drive as they were returning from Casper. It was a Highway. Meeting at Autobahn Motor Werks in Billings were pleasure meeting them and welcoming them into our circle. They Greg and Susan Kohn in their speed yellow Boxster, Susan drive a guards red ‘79 911SC that Doug is busy restoring to its Finn in her white 944, Stephanie Haider in her guards red former glory. 911 Cab, and new Absaroka members, Shane and Natalie In the big picture, it was a nice day. We had an excellent turn-out Lorenz and five-month old Annabelle. They were in their of Porsches and friends. The goal of getting out, meeting new black 996 turbo. Annabelle was nestled snuggly in the back friends and renewing acquaintances was fully achieved. A re- seat sporting a bright red Porsche driving suit. Also joining freshing comment came from new member, Kent Harris, who us on the drive were Dane and Jody Schofield of Billings in stated he had never been in a car club and thought we just sat their midnight blue Boxster S. around and talked cars all day; he enjoyed the fact that the car is Off to Red Lodge! In Red Lodge we met up with Jim and the commonality we all have and that the social aspect was the Karen Grace in their polar ice 993, Jeff Walker in his blue focus. It reflects back to the PCA mantra “It’s not just the cars, 944, and our newest Absaroka members, Kent and Linda it’s the people.” Another high point to mention is Dane and Jody Harris from Absarokee, in the missing twin to Stephanie’s Schofield who came along as guests are now members. Wel- red 911 cabriolet. come! We departed Red Lodge and took the short hop over the hill on the serpentine road to Bearcreek. This provided the first bit of excitement as we lost Shane and Natalie. With the stop and go pedestrian traffic in Red Lodge and their unfa- miliarity to the area, we turned and they didn’t. Luckily, Red Lodge resident, Jeff Walker, saw what was happening and tracked them down and together they were back on course. Lesson learned is I should hand out a map to everyone, and we as a club should perhaps invest in some radios for tours. Cell phones are fine, but coverage makes them sketchy in our mountainous area. Further down the road we pulled into the Edelweiss Saloon (rumor has it the ladies restroom was a bit of an adventure) where we met veteran Absaroka members, Neil and Kathy Hansen, in their midnight blue Boxster S and waited for the Lorenzs and Jeff to arrive. It was nice meeting the Hansens for the first time and having them be able to join us on the trip. Living in Powell they unfortunately miss out on a lot of the fun. Now, with a complete group of 10 beautiful Porsches we began our journey. After some slight peer pressure from the Hansens and Schofields, all Boxster and 911 tops were dropped and all appeared right in the world. Less than 10 miles later it started to rain, lightly at first, then harder. It was a test of wills to see who would blink first and pull over to close their top. I think the Harris’ held out the longest. As we started over the hill it was starting to get pretty wet. The scenery was beautiful with green grass, red rock formations, and the road in perfect shape. At the top of Dead Indian Summit it was cold and windy with rain and stinging sleet. At 8,060 feet, it looked and felt like winter. At the bottom of the hill at the high bridge crossing over Sun Light Creek it rained even harder. Not knowing what the weather was like another 3,000 feet in elevation at the top of the Beartooth and not wanting to drive 20-odd miles to find out, we re- treated back the way we came, up the hill to Red Lodge. 8 Montana and Wyoming’s unpredictable mountain weather won this round. The Big Horns Moun- tains will definitely be a tour on our calendar for 2012.

Before lunch arrived we held a quick club meeting. Fred up- dated us on the status of the treasury (which is very healthy with a little over $4,000 in the bank) and the upcoming All Euro Car Show. Fred stressed the need for volunteers to help with activities like registration, selling ice cream and staging partici- pants. Dan introduced the new lapel pins to the group and promptly sold a dozen. Scott had arranged with the hotel man- agement to allow us to park on the lawn for a group picture af- ter lunch. This would be a great place for a show and shine event in the future! Our host for the day, Dr. Batty, arrived shortly afterwards in a Sunbeam Tiger. Fred presented him with a bottle of Pinot Noir as a thank you for hosting.

Dr. Batty’s collection is located just north of town. Since only Fred knew the location, the drive there was a comedy of errors! We have to get better in this area, once again the idea of radios and maps comes to mind. None the less, we all made it un- scathed to his farm. The collection consisting of mostly English cars (the only Porsches were a 911T and a Beck’s replica Speedster) was enjoyed by all with everyone having a favorite of some sort. A short sampling of vehicles is: two Chevrolet Corvair Spyders, two different Volvos, several Willy’s Jeeps, a Land Rover Series (my favorite), a Rolls Royce Corniche, sev- eral Austin Healys, multiple MGs, a couple Triumphs, a Ford Model T “Tin Lizzy,” and a Jaguar XKE parked on the front Above: The newest car in the Absaroka family, Bill Grun- lawn. 11 William (Bill) Witcher 1936 - 2011 Absaroka Arrow Aug/Sep 2011

Bill Witcher, our longtime friend, webmaster, Absaroka Re- gion member (since 1980) and lifetime PCA member passed away on July 4, 2011. Bill will be greatly missed. Bill and Molly have been members of the Absaroka region since the early 80’s. He served as our vice president for several terms, newsletter editor, and was ever-present at the various versions of the All Euro Car Show with his beautiful 1963 356B. As his family said, “Bill was a car guy.” His various websites all featured cars of some sort. From my talks with Bill, he seemed to have a passion for the sports racing cars of the 1960’s. In the following montage, taken from Bill’s website and Facebook page, you can see how Porsches were part of his life and the Witcher’s family. In addition to Porsches he owned an Alfa Romeo Guiletta Coupe, amongst others. We will miss our dear friend and we extend to Molly and daughters, Emily and Amy, and the entire Witcher family, our sympathy at this time of loss. For Jo and I, his advice on visiting his summer home in Cayucos, California, added to our recent Porsche trip. We too, enjoyed the beauty of the ocean along with the cala- mari at Schooner’s Wharf. Thanks again Bill.

Bill Witcher Get-together

Bill’s family said he was a private man and that they would have a gathering later for friends to celebrate Bill and his life. That time has come and will be held on August 27th at 3:00 p.m. following the All Euro Car Show. Molly and her daughters have reserved a room at Prudential Floberg, 1550 Poly Drive, across the street from the car show. Those from the car show may come and other friends will join them for refreshments (no alcohol) and a time to relax, share memories of Bill, and see some photos his daugh- ters are preparing. This is fitting and a wonderful way to honor our longtime friend. I hope you are all able to stop by and say hello to Molly and her daughters and share your memories of Bill.

Even the Greatest Drivers Get Scared From : Porschepurist.com

You may remember that Sir Stirling Moss was scheduled to race his very own 1961 Porsche RS61 during the Legends race at this year’s Le Mans. Well this afternoon during qual- ify for the race, Moss made the decision to call it quits.

“This afternoon I scared myself and I have always said that if I felt I was not up to it or that I was getting in the way of fel- low competitors, then I would retire”.

Having raced from the age of 18, winning the British Grand Prix twice, the Monaco Grand Prix three times, the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio and the Tourist Trophy, as well as countless other races, during his professional career, Sir Stirling Moss may is widely regarded as THE greatest driver never to have won the Formula One championship.

As Stirling said, on the day of his retirement, “I love racing, but now it is time to stop”.

Personally, I think Sir Stirling Moss’s reason for retiring de- fines his greatness.

Nürburgring 24 Hours: Porsche triumphs and sets new distance record Dramatic 24 hour sprint: At the 39th running of the classic on the Nuerburgring-Nordschleife (25/26 June), works drivers Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas as well as Lucas Luhr took the lead with a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR after 7:25 hours ahead of strong competition from , BMW und Mercedes. The quartet fended off rivals to the flag and set a distance record of 3,958.968 kilometers. For Porsche and the Manthey Racing squad, this marked the fifth victory at the “Ring” in the last six years – the same for Timo Bernhard. For the innovative Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid the weekend ran less smoothly. Works drivers Jo- erg Bergmeister, Richard Lietz, Marco Holzer and Patrick Long led the field after four hours in front of 220,000 spectators, but spent a lot of time in the pits with a broken flange on the differential to finish 23rd.
