Crown Valley. The films of famed Italian director, Sergio Leone gave rise to a new genre of filming in the 1960’s, the “spaghetti western,” and produced such classics as “ A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS,” “FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE” and the blockbuster “THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY,” all starring a young Clint Eastwood. Leone’s “ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST” which starred Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda in a rare bad guy role, is considered to be one of the best films ever made. These Italian-made westerns continued with the films of Sergio Corbucci and his “Django” films which starred Italian film star, Franco Nero. CHALLENGE AT CROWN VALLEY intends to reimagine this popular style of film making and bring it to a new generation of global audiences. Written and directed by Giuseppe Antonio Miglietta, Challenge at Crown Valley incorporates many of the classic themes that were so prevalent in the massively successful “spaghetti western” genre. Themes of redemption, revenge, pathos, and absolution run through this film. Shot on location in Italy and Spain, Challenge at Crown Valley will have the authentic look and feel of the Leone films. Wintersession 2014 English CIN 372 W01: FILM GENRES: FILM NOIR (Fulfills LIT requirement or A&S elective): This course will closely examine the period of American filmmaking during and following WWII later labeled “Film Noir” as well as contemporary reinventions of the genre. The noir canon of films has been so categorized by their mood (bleakness, desperation, moral corruption), style (low-key and expressionistic lighting, deep focus), and characters (antiheroes, femmes fatales, doomed love). Exploring the cultural references to the more dark side of human nature, we will look at such films as They Live By Night and In a Lonely Place (Nicholas Ray), Touch of Evil (Orson Welles), Key Largo (John Huston), Mildred Pierce (Michael Curtiz), Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder), The Wrong Man (Alfred Hitchcock), Kiss Me Deadly (Robert Aldrich), and The Killing (Stanley Kubrick), as well as Post-noir and Neo Noir reinventions including Bonnie and Clyde (Arthur Penn), Chinatown (Roman Polanski), Blood Simple (Coen Bros.), Blade Runner (Ridley Scott), Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino), Body Heat (Lawrence Kasdan), Lost Highway (David Lynch), Memento (Christopher Nolan), and A History of Violence (David Cronenberg), among others. We will also analyze how contemporary films, television dramas, and video games have incorporated certain aspects of noir; in particular, the male antihero (Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead), chiaroscuro lighting and cinematography as metaphor in television (Dexter, Mad Men), as well as the renewed interest in the genre as part of the game play in L.A. However, the third episode in the saga, Return of the Jedi (1983), was received less favorably than its predecessors by critics. This article will examine historical record and analyze aspects of syuzhet (‘plot’) and fabula (‘story’) (BORDWELL, 1985, pp. 49-50) in the screenplay in order to establish why Return of the Jedi works less successfully as a narrative than the first two films. The results of the investigation suggest that this was due to a fundamental philosophical conflict between screenwriters George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan. Keywors: Star Wars, George Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan, syuzhet, fabula.

Seven Samurai and Silverado -Kurosawa’s Title Influence on Lawrence Kasdan’s Revival Western- Author(s) DAVIES Brett,J Citation 明治大学国際日本学研究, 9(1): 111-119 URL http://hdl.handle.net/10291/20645 Rights Issue Date 2017-03-31 Text version publisher Type Departmental Bulletin Paper DOI https://m-repo.lib.meiji.ac.jp/ Meiji University 111 【Research Note】 Seven Samurai and Silverado: Kurosawa’s Influence on Lawrence Kasdan’s Revival Western DAVIES, Brett J. Abstract Lawrence Kasdan was one of the most successful American filmmakers of the 1980s. His third work as director, Silverado (1985), has been credited with reviving the Western pic- ture after a decade of dormancy, eschewing 1970s revisionism for a more classic approach to the genre. However, this paper will argue that Kasdan may have been influenced more by Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai than by any Hollywood cowboy film. It will first ex- amine Kasdan’s style and concerns pre-Silverado, before outlining some of the similarities that samurai and Western films historically share. Finally, this paper will highlight some of the specific ways in which Kasdan’s Silverado paid homage to Kurosawa’s Seven Samu- rai, through plot, character and theme. Keywords: Lawrence Kasdan, Akira Kurosawa, Silverado, Seven Samurai, Western film, genre The Early Career of Lawrence Kasdan In the early-1980s, Lawrence Kasdan was one of the most successful screenwriters work- ing in Hollywood. His first produced screenplay was The Empire Strikes Back (1980), widely regarded as the most interesting instalment in George Lucas’s Star Wars series. This was fol- lowed by further work with Lucas, along with director Steven Spielberg, on Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), a screenplay voted one of the “101 Greatest Screenplays” of all-time by the Writers Guild of America (2005).

Vivien Claire Silvey December 2012 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University. ii This thesis is solely my original work, except where due reference is given. iii Acknowledgements I am extremely grateful for all the time and effort my dear supervisor Cathie Summerhayes has invested throughout this project. Her constant support, encouragement, advice and wisdom have been absolutely indispensable. To that master of words, puns and keeping his hat on during the toughest times of semester, Roger Hillman, I extend profound gratitude. Roger‟s generosity with opportunities for co-publishing, lecturing and tutoring, and enthusiasm for all things Turkish German, musical and filmic has been invaluable. For all our conversations and film-loans, I warmly say to Gino Moliterno grazie mille! I am indebted to Gaik Cheng Khoo, Russell Smith and Fiona Jenkins, who have provided valuable information, lecturing and tutoring roles. I am also grateful for the APA scholarship and for all the helpful administration staff in the School of Cultural Inquiry. At the heart of this thesis lies the influence of my mother Elizabeth, who has taken me to see scores of “foreign” and “art” films over the years, and my father Jerry, with whom I have watched countless Hollywood movies. Thank you for instilling in me a fascination for all things “world cinema”, for your help, and for providing a caring home. To my gorgeous Dave, thank you for all your love, motivation, cooking and advice. I am enormously honoured to have you by my side.
