Sikkema Jenkins & Co. is pleased to present As I Went Walking, an exhibition of recent paintings and works on paper by Josephine Halvorson. On view from October 19 through November 22, the exhibition is Halvorson’s fourth solo show with the gallery. A catalog accompanies the exhibition with an essay by Erin Yerby. As I Went Walking includes a series of life-sized oil paintings made in the western Massachusetts town where Halvorson lives and votes. The exhibition’s title is borrowed from the first line of a missing stanza from Woody Guthrie’s anthem, This Land Is Your Land, rediscovered in the 1990s. As I went walking I saw a sign there / And on the sign it said "No Trespassing." / But on the other side it didn't say nothing, / That side was made for you and me. The lyrics echo Halvorson’s artistic practice and subject matter. Wandering the woods near her home, she encounters signs of neighbors, dead and alive. Naturalized marks of ownership animate and declare themselves. Wherever one’s eyes land, there are human claims and natural reclamations. Halvorson makes paintings from direct observation, en plein air. She finds herself working at the limits of private and public property. The feet of the easel, the table and the artist trespass and straddle invisible boundaries. A day’s work leaves its physical imprint in the tamped-down ground. But the painting itself, in its portability and self-contained rectangle, leaves the site of its making without a trace. Once removed from its original context, the painting metaphorically extends the boundary line. -
The Practice of Everyday Life Group Exhibition at Slag Gallery, April 18Th – May 19Th 2019
The Practice of Everyday Life Group Exhibition at Slag Gallery, April 18th – May 19th 2019 Artists: Nina Bellucci, Todd Bienvenu, Matt Bollinger, Dawn Clements, Josephine Halvorson, EJ Hauser, Sharon Horvath, Sharon Madanes, Sangram Majumdar, Leeza Meksin, Walter Price. Curators: Tirtzah Bassel and Etty Yaniv ”The Practice of Everyday Life” brings together eleven painters whose work is rooted in close observation of their daily surroundings. In his book by the same title, Michel de Certeau looks at the ways in which people individualize mass culture by manually altering products, rituals, language, and navigation of public spaces. Often overlooked by established institutions and designers, these small acts become a form of resistance. Similarly, the artists in the exhibition deploy the act of observation in an ongoing attempt to push against a predetermined reality and make meaning of the structures that shape our lives. Ranging in size from monumental to intimate, each artist utilizes scale to position the viewer in relation to the work. Josephine Halvorson entices us to look down and observe in detail the ground at our feet. A large-scale athletic figure in Walter Price’s work rips across the canvas with extraordinary psychological impact. Leeza Meksin embeds plastic vacuum molds of zip ties and purse strings into her vertical composition, using the literal life size of the impressions to establish a sense of human scale while de familiarizing our visual orientation. The work of Sharon Horvath is intimate in size yet depicts vast spaces, alluding to our small size in relation to the cosmos. The process of returning again and again to a single visual source is often a key to seeing beyond the obvious. -
