    THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 24, No. 3 (2002) Tony Adamle: Doctor of Defense By Bob Carroll Paul Brown “always wanted his players to better themselves, and he wanted us known for being more than just football players,” Tony Adamle told an Akron Beacon Journal reporter in 1999. In the case of Adamle, the former Cleveland Browns linebacker who passed away on October 8, 2000, at age 76, his post-football career brought him even more honor than captaining a world championship team. Tony was born May 15, 1924, in Fairmont, West Virginia, to parents who had immigrated from Slovenia. By the time he reached high school, his family had moved to Cleveland where he attended Collinwood High. From there, he moved on to Ohio State University where he first played under Brown who became the OSU coach in 1941. World War II interrupted Adamle’s college days along with those of so many others. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the Middle East theatre. By the time he returned, Paul Bixler had succeeded Paul Brown, who had moved on to create Cleveland’s team in the new All-America Football Conference. Adamle lettered for the Buckeyes in 1946 and played well enough that he was selected to the 1947 College All-Star Game. He started at fullback on a team that pulled off a rare 16-0 victory over the NFL’s 1946 champions, the Chicago Bears. Six other members of the starting lineup were destined to make a mark in the AAFC, including the game’s stars, quarterback George Ratterman and running back Buddy Young.

    Heisman Dinner (12/18/91) On behalf of the University of Michigan I am proud and honored to be here tonight to join you in celebrating the talent and achievements of this year’s Heisman Trophy winner, Desmond Howard. Michigan has had quite a wait between Heisman winners--- --51 years to be exact-- Of course, I am thrilled that this honor has come to us once again during my watch. One thing is for sure, However long the wait when Michigan gives you a winner, he is a truly great winner ! Our first Heisman awardee was two time All-AmericanTom Harmon back in 1940. And tonight we honor Desmond Howard. Harmon and Howard--outstanding athletes and outstanding men. On the surface, you might think these two don’t have much in common. Different generations, different backgrounds and experiences, Harmon over six feet and 200 pounds, Howard of relatively small build even the game of football they played so brilliantly is different. But I think in the important things they have much in common. Each in his own way represents the best of Michigan. Each exemplifies in his achievements and character the values that our University has stood for for 175 years. Each man a Student Athlete-- For them playing football, however valuable, seen as a means to an end--education-- and not an end in itself. Each a man of indomitable spirit, determination, and dedication on the playing field .....and also in the classroom.     THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 8, No. 9 (1986) BUCKING THE SYSTEM OR, WHY THE NFL CAN'T FIND HAPPINESS WITH ITS PASSER RATINGS By Bob Carroll If you believe in your heart of hearts that Warren Moon is a better passer than Otto Graham, you're at one with the National Football League. Never mind that Graham is a card-carrying member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and a quarterback who led the Cleveland Browns to seven league championships in ten seasons, while Moon is the oft-booed signal-caller for one of the NFL's least successful franchises. According to the National Football League's Passer Rating System, Moon tossed for a 68.5 mark last season; Graham, in 1950 – a year his Cleveland Browns won the NFL Championship, could manage only a paltry 64.7.
