The triumphs, challenges and failures of young North Island brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli): a study of behaviour, growth, dispersal and mortality Stephanie Walden A thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Zoology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Alexandra Louise Wilson 2013 i ii Abstract North Island brown kiwi (NIBK, Apteryx mantelli), an endemic New Zealand species, are estimated to have declined by 90% from pre-human colonisation numbers. Currently, at least 60% of mortality is attributed to introduced mammalian predators, namely stoats (Mustela erminea) preying on chicks. Therefore, conservation effort focuses on predator trapping/killing, and hatching and rearing NIBK chicks in captivity and releasing them back into the wild. These efforts are resulting in increased recruitment of chicks into populations. However, little is known about the biology and behaviour of NIBK chicks in the wild and how this may affect management of these populations. Consequently, the aim of this study was to examine the ecology of young wild NIBK in a natural high density population with reduced predator diversity on Ponui Island. More specifically, the goal was to determine their growth rates, behaviour around the natal nest, dispersal and mortality, and how these factors may be influenced by environmental variables. During the 2010 - 2011 and 2011 - 2012 breeding seasons 29 young NIBK were observed from hatching until mortality or the end of 2012.

    OCCURRENCE AND TIMING OF EGG TEETH IN BIRDS GEORGE A. CLARK, JR. HE egg tooth is a small tooth-like protuberance on the distal end of the T dorsal surface of the upper mandible at the time of hatching. It is generally believed that the egg tooth functions in cutting through the shell membranes and shell at hatching. In addition to egg teeth on the upper mandible, a number of authors have noted tooth-like modifications of various kinds at the tip of the lower mandible in embryos or newly hatched birds of a variety of families. The objective of this paper is to present an extended review of scattered records of egg teeth as a stimulus and aid for further studies on the morphology, function, development, and evolution of these structures. In spite of the great significance of hatching in the life of the bird, very little is known of the causal relations involved in the process. Certain correlated events such as respiratory, circulatory, and behavioral changes are known, but in no case have the factors responsible for the timing of hatching been specifi- cally identified. The role of the egg tooth in hatching also needs further study. Fisher (1953) studied the development in the chicken of the hatching muscle which may be important in the functionin g of the egg tooth. It has been sug- gested that the hatching muscle provides a major part of the thrust in breaking through the shell. The egg tooth is possibly unique as a structure functional only at the time of hatching.

Cuckoos are widely distributed, but are concentrated in the tropics, where they occupy a wide range of habitats. Both terrestrial and arboreal behaviors can be found in this group, but there is no consensus on as to whether these behaviors have arisen more than once. Moreover, the historical distribution of cuckoos is poorly understood. This paper presents a biogeographyc analysis of the early history of the distribution of these birds. The analysis was per- formed by using the Principle of Parsimony based on primary and secondary “Brooks Parsimony Analysis” (BPA). Despite some exceptions, the primary BPA corroborated events of vicariance (general pattern) in the early distribution of cuck- oos and a terrestrial ancestor widespread in the Gondwana. The most parsimonious hypothesis suggests that the distri- bution of terrestrial cuckoos (basal group) is associated with the break-up of the Gondwana (Early to Mid Cretaceous), consistent with molecular data for other living birds. On the other hand, the fossil records indicate a more recent origin (Paleocene to Upper Tertiary) in the Laurasia. Nevertheless, to corroborate the fossil records, the early distribution of cuckoos would not be explained by parsimony, since additional steps on dispersion and local extinctions should be added.

In this paper we present the bird species observed during a Uakari Lodge; regular type of tourist activity held in Uakari Lodge and also relate the richness and diversity of Amazon; birds to fluctuations in water level during several months. The study was conducted between June 2009 and September 2011, and it took a total of 68 boat trips, 480 ecotourists, adding Varzea Forest. up to a total of 238 hours. 134 bird species were recorded, which corresponds to 37% of the number of species that occurs in the Mamirauá SDR. Large-billed Tern (Phaetusa simplex) and Striated Heron (Butorides striata) were seen at all the trips. Yellow-rumped Cacique (Cacicus cela) and Black-collared Hawk (Busarellus nigricolis) were observed 62 times. Horned Screamer (Anhima cornuta) and Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) came right after, with 61 sightings. The distribution of observations of attractive species really provide the more informed ecotourist some real entertainment, as to which would be the best time of year to visit the Mamirauá SDR.

The large crop and lower esophagusrepresent 77% of the total gut capacity.The crop is folded into two interconnectedchambers, and the lower esophagusis a multichamberedorgan. Both are unusuallymuscular with constrictionsbe- tween chambers.The interior lining of the crop and esophagushas longitudinal ridges coveredby cornifiedepithelium. The cropand esophagusare the main fermentationorgans, with pH and volatile-fatty-acidslevels equivalent to thosefound in mammalswith foregut fermentation.The proventriculumand gizzardare muchreduced in capacity.A combination of abrasionand microbialaction effectively reduces particle size along the gut. Hsiang2,3 Abstract Background: Earth’s lower latitudes boast the majority of extant avian species-level and higher-order diversity, with many deeply diverging clades restricted to vestiges of Gondwana. However, palaeontological analyses reveal that many avian crown clades with restricted extant distributions had stem group relatives in very different parts of the world. Results: Our phylogenetic analyses support the enigmatic fossil bird Foro panarium Olson 1992 from the early Eocene (Wasatchian) of Wyoming as a stem turaco (Neornithes: Pan-Musophagidae), a clade that is presently endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. Our analyses offer the first well-supported evidence for a stem musophagid (and therefore a useful fossil calibration for avian molecular divergence analyses), and reveal surprising new information on the early morphology and biogeography of this clade. Total-clade Musophagidae is identified as a potential participant in dispersal via the recently proposed ‘North American Gateway’ during the Palaeogene, and new biogeographic analyses illustrate the importance of the fossil record in revealing the complex historical biogeography of crown birds across geological timescales. Conclusions: In the Palaeogene, total-clade Musophagidae was distributed well outside the range of crown Musophagidae in the present day. This observation is consistent with similar biogeographic observations for numerous other modern bird clades, illustrating shortcomings of historical biogeographic analyses that do not incorporate information from the avian fossil record.

During field work in July 2011 in the Yacambú National Park, in an area of premontane cloud forest, I observed and photographed an individual in El Blanquito reservoir. This is the first record of the species in Lara State, and apparently the highest record of the species in northern South America. Hoatzin Opisthocomus hoazin is the only member of Opisthocomidae and one the (Statius Muller, 1776) individual was spotted at a distance of 50 m from the shore phylogenetic relationship of the Hoatzin is still disputed, of the reservoir as it remained perched motionless for most peculiar species of bird from South America. The first site of the main tour was Huacarpay Lake, near the beautiful Andean city of Cusco (accessed after a short flight from Lima). This gave us a few endemic species like Bearded Mountaineer and Rusty-fronted Canastero; along with other less local species like Many-colored Rush-tyrant, Plumbeous Rail, Puna Teal, Andean Negrito and Puna Ibis. The following day we birded along the road towards Manu where we picked up birds like Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, Spot-winged Pigeon, and a beautiful Peruvian endemic in the form of Creamy-crested Spinetail. We also saw Yungas Pygmy-Owl, Black-faced Ibis, Hooded and Scarlet-bellied Mountain- Tanagers, Red-crested Cotinga and the gorgeous Grass-green Tanager.
