The GRF needs volunteers at the National Specialty to help with the blood drawing and paperwork. A booth will be set up in the main show site on Wednesday and Thursday. Veterinarians, Technicians, dog holders, paperwork specialists and people to label samples are all needed for this continuing effort. Anyone able to help or willing to donate blood or cheek swabs from their dogs, is urged to contact Mike Lappin at [email protected], or phone 508-759-4522. GRCA 2007 National Specialty • 13 MORNING HOSPITALITY A Break with Tradition In order to provide hospitality to the most exhibitors and spectators, we are breaking with the tradition of providing a hospitality room at the host hotel. Instead we invite you to stop by our special hospitality booth at the show site in the Event Center Tent for “morning munchies.” The booth will be open from Monday (Agility Day) through Saturday (Best of Breed Day) from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. You can sit down, nibble and visit; or if you are in a rush, you can grab and go. You will find us inside the Event Center Tent at Harvey Airfield, in close proximity to the Agility/Obedience/Conformation rings and the food vendors. Our complimentary beverage and food service will close at 10:00 a.m., but our table area will be open until mid-afternoon for food vendor seating. With six days of hospitality to provide, our neighboring Golden clubs in Canada (GRC of British Columbia); Spokane, Washington (Inland Empire GRC); and in the Portland, Oregon area (Pacific Rim GRC) are each hosting a day. On Saturday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. we will also have a special visit from Starbucks Coffee Co., which is supporting our National by offering FREE coffee and pastries to all. Make sure you stop by the tent for this special Northwest treat. For additional information contact Bev Brown, 360-886-6966; e-mail [email protected].

DIRECTIONS TO MAIN SHOW SITE Harvey Airfield is located in Snohomish, WA, 8 miles East of Everett, WA, and 27 miles North- Northeast of Seattle, WA. If you are flying into SeaTac Airport after 1:00 p.m., the traffic going North will be very congested until after 7:00 p.m. If you are arriving before 1:00 p.m. going Northbound to Everett you will be driving against the traffic. Stud dog must be entered in the Stud Dog Class and shown in the ring with their Get. Owner of the Stud Dog need not necessarily be the owner of the Get. Judging will be based on the merits of the Get. *BROOD BITCH CLASS: Same as Stud Dog Class except substitute Brood Bitch for Stud Dog and Produce for Get. *Chapter 11, Section 8 of the “Rules Applying to Dog Shows” provides that a neutered male may be entered as a Stud Dog in the Stud Dog Class and a spayed Bitch may be entered as a Brood Bitch in the Brood Bitch class. NOTE: As the judge’s decision in the Stud Dog and Brood Bitch Class is based on the merits of more than one dog/bitch, not one of the dogs/bitches making up the entry judged first in these classes will be eligible to compete for Best of Breed by virtue of having won this class.

JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP Junior Handlers must include their AKC JUNIOR HANDLER NUMBER on each entry. You may obtain your junior identification number by calling the AKC Judges Education Department, (919) 816-3776. Each dog handled in a regular Junior Showmanship Class must be entered in one of the breed or obedience classes at the show, or must be entered for Junior Showmanship only. However, a dog that must be withdrawn for good and sufficient reason, such as a bitch in season or a veterinarian’s excuse, may be replaced by another dog meeting the below ownership requirements. Such substitution must be requested in writing stating the reason for the substitution and must be accompanied by an official AKC entry form. All such requests must be made one-half hour prior to the judging of any regular classes at the show. Each dog must be owned by the Junior Handler, or by the Junior Handler’s father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, grandfather or grandmother, including the corresponding step- and half-relations, or by a member of the Junior Handler’s household. Every dog entered for Junior Showmanship must be eligible to compete in or Obedience Trials. BITCHES IN SEASON ARE NOT ELIGIBLE. At a Specialty Show, each dog must be of the breed for which the show is held. A dog that has been excused or disqualified by a breed judge or by a Bench Show Committee may still be handled in Junior Showmanship, if eligible to compete in Obedience Trials. A dog that has been rejected, dismissed or excused under the Dog Show Rules for the protection of the other dogs at the show or for the protection of the dog excused, may not be handled in Junior Showmanship. 24 • GRCA 2007 National Specialty SWEEPS & VETERAN SWEEPS

SWEEPSTAKES & VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES Wednesday, September 19, 2007 Harvey Airfield, Snohomish, WA (outdoors) Sweepstakes & Veteran Sweepstakes Dogs...... Bruce McLean Sweepstakes & Veteran Sweepstakes Bitches, Best in Sweepstakes and Best in Veteran Sweepstakes...... Joyce Kinghorn GRCA SWEEPSTAKES GUIDELINES The mission of the GRCA Sweepstakes is to provide a competition where breeders and owners can showcase their puppies and veterans. It was established to encourage owner/ handlers to show their own dogs and to share the results of their breeding program, the potential of their young dogs and the longevity and structural soundness of their veterans with other breeders and exhibitors. HANDLER: The handler of a Sweepstakes exhibit must be either the owner, co-owner, breeder or member of their immediate family or legal domestic partner as they are listed on file with the American Kennel Club as of the closing date for the show for which the Sweepstakes entry is being made. Immediate family is defined as husband, wife, mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter. Stepchildren and legal wards are also included in this definition. In-laws and grandchildren are not considered to be immediate family members. No other individual may take the entry into the ring during judging or check-in. The following individuals are excluded from showing an exhibit in sweepstakes unless they are the SOLE owner registered with the AKC or co-own the entry with a member of their immediate family (as defined above) or a legal domestic partner: • Any individual listed as an agent on any dog in any regular or non-regular class • Any individual with an Agent number including, but not limited to an AKC Registered Handler Number or Professional Handlers Association (PHA) number. To avoid confusion or question, it is recommended that a photocopy of the registration certificate be included with the entry for a co-owned exhibit. Disabled or physically challenged handlers are encouraged to show their own dogs and every effort will be made to accommodate them. Some things which might be done to assist them are: making sure the ring gate opening is wide enough for a wheel chair; making sure the surface is as level and smooth as possible; placing slower handlers at the end of the line or having them gait their dogs together; allowing someone else to push an exhibitor’s wheelchair, providing they do not handle the dog; making sure stewards and judges face a handler who is hearing impaired when speaking to them; permitting the use of crutches or canes. Best in Sweepstakes Class. It is required that the same person who showed the dog to a first place in a Sweepstakes class will also show the dog in the Best in Sweeps class. However, if that person should have more than one dog in the Best in Sweepstakes class, someone else is permitted to show the additional winner. That person should meet the handler definitions above. Only in cases where there is not another owner, co-owner, breeder or co- breeder, should another person take the dog into the Best in Sweeps class. It is understood that there would be no financial benefit to that individual. Individuals who have an AKC Handler number, a PHA number or are listed as an agent on any dog in the regular or non-regular classes may not show a sweepstakes entrant unless they are the sole owner registered with the AKC or co-own the entry with a member of their immediate family (as defined above) or a legal domestic partner.
