That tactic was most visible when the 38-year-old had a forehand, as he targeted the Italian's backhand with 68 per cent of his shots off that wing. Federer made a concerted effort to keep the ball out of the middle of the court. He hit just three balls mid-rally (excluding serves and returns) into the middle third of the court, whereas Berrettini directed 24 per cent of his balls down the middle.
