IT rackStats , ~(

';; ~ -) Greetings to all fans of TrackStats! We trust that you all enjoy the statistical material we h ave been bringing you for the past few months. And now that Track Newsletter is in its weekly stage, we will be able to · ·· ,, offer about five pages of statistics per issue . · We are anxious to have some reader comment on TrackStats. Is it worthwhile to you? Which features ., . have you liked? Which have you disliked? Which would you like to see more of? These questions grow important to us as we deplete our stock of readily-available material. With an eye to the future, we can see that we will need more things. We already have a small core of "nuts" working on . . various projects, but even they can accomplish only so much. Would you like to help? Even though we have _:_~a:-uncovered several new talents, we certain that there must be more budding "nuts" among the readership. Are you working secretly on a project that might be shareable with others? Write and let us know. To give you an idea of what sort of projects we have in mind, here is a listing of some of the things that we would like to see pursued: 1. Career progressions of top athletes. '--' 2. Continental records-the best marks ever recorded by athletes from each of the continents, and the best marks ever recorded on those continents (soil· records). 3. Club records-a comparison of the records of major US track clubs (and perhaps even a comparison with majo ; clubs in other parts of the world). · ; 4. performances-what are the best ( 10?) marks ever recorded in each event of the decathlon, during decathlon competition? 5. Dual meets-make up your own. e.g., California versus the rest of the US or the world. 6. Ethnic or racial records-black, oriental, caucasian, etc. 7. Best high jumpers by style-all-time list of flappers, western rollers, etc. 8. differential-who are the jumpers that have cleared the greatest height above their heads? 9. High school mortality-what happens (statistically) to the top 10 preps in an event during the next five years? ·' · '( -" - "; 10. Progress by age-the top 10 performers in one event on the all-time list . How did they compare at various agE j 11. Record progressions-world indoor, and indoor and outdoor for the US, European, collegiate and prep . 12. Winning streaks-which athletes have put together the most meets without a loss? Those are some of the projects we would like to see pursued. Some of those already in progress include: 1. Age records. · 2. All-time lists-world, US, collegiate, age-group, etc . ·· 3. Averages of marks . ....____... 4. Brother combinations, father-son combinations, twins. 5. School records comparison. 6. State records comparison. 7. Stadium records comparison. ~ 8. All-time relay splits (and averages) . 9. Combinations-100/200, 1500/5000, etc. 10. Non-winning bests (and best marks for place). 11. World outdoor record progression. Some of these projects have been done in years past and only need updating . Others have never been tackled and are just waiting. There are many other projects open to research. If we have any preliminary researc : material available we will pass it along to whomever we assign the project. If you are interested in being a part of this program, please contact us at your earliest convenience (All m • terial is submitted on a volunteer basis, there is no pay) . Give us some brief background information on your qu, ifications for doing this work , what you want to do, and very importantly, what research materials you have avail able . Please direct all correspondence on this matter to TrackStats, Track & Field News, Box 296, Los Altos, Calif., 94022 USA. Please do not expect an instantaneous (or detailed) response . But we will get in touch :
