Pebble Beach® Spyglass Hill® Spanish
TM THE TECHNOLOGY LEADER IN GOLF SIMULATION Pebble Beach® Pebble Beach is probably the greatest meeting of land and sea in Ameri- can Golf and likely the most extensive. Pebble Beach Golf Links® was the first public course to be selected as the No.1 golf course in America by Golf Digest in 2001. It has been the site of golf’s most prestigious tourna- ments, including the annual AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and five U.S. Open Championships. Pebble Beach will host another U.S. Amateur in 2018 and its sixth U.S. Open in 2019. Truly the most coveted course in the world to play! Spyglass Hill® Spyglass Hill is without question one of the top public golf courses in the U.S. Ranked #48 in the U.S, it is located on the Pebble Beach peninsula. The PGA TOUR®, consistently lists Spyglass Hill’s holes 6, 8 and 16 among the toughest on the TOUR, and during the 1999 US Amateur, the stroke average of the field during medal play was in excess of 79. Spanish Bay® The Links at Spanish Bay was built on vast sandy wasteland ideally suited for creating a true coastal Scottish links-style course. Development began in 1985, and was planned to protect the native dunes habitat. Prior cham- pionship tournaments included the 1993 Shivas Irons Games of the Links and NorCal Toyota Challenge. The Old Course, St. Andrews® If there is a single course that golfers aspire to play once in their lifetime, it is the Old Course at St. -
Tax Sand Traps for Ernie Els and Other Pro Athletes South Africa’S Ernie Els Won the 141St British Open and Should Be Relishing His Success, Not Worrying About Taxes
Robert W. Wood THE TAX LAWYER Jul. 24 2012 — 12:00 am Tax Sand Traps For Ernie Els And Other Pro Athletes South Africa’s Ernie Els won the 141st British Open and should be relishing his success, not worrying about taxes. Even less successful professional golfers may not engender much sympathy. The money seems incredible, the work seems better than Ernie Els of South Africa holds the Claret Jug, 'The what most of us do for a Golf Champion Trophy' after winning the 2012 British Open Golf Championship at Royal Lytham and St living, and the adoring fans Annes in Lytham, north-west England, on July 22, 2012. Els won the championship with a score of 273, and media seem generally one shot clear of Adam Scott of Australia. (Image supportive. And think of that credit: AFP/Getty Images via @daylife) endorsement income! Still, if you’ve ever waged a tax battle—or even had difficulty trying to figure out something that is supposedly simple—you might feel differently. Imagine not just dealing with the IRS or your own home country’s tax rules. Suppose you earn income in various countries and must apportion it and pay tax in many different places? Welcome to the world of the professional athlete. For the British Open, it isn’t only winnings that are at stake. It is also endorsement income. The UK’s tax collector, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, does a shipshape job of revenue collection and administration, some say better than the IRS. In fact, even those who did not make The Open cut and didn’t earn money from the tournament must pay taxes on endorsements. -

Travis laid out the two 18-hole golf courses at Westchester Country Club, just 30 miles outside New York City, that opened in 1922. The courses were built by the Philadelphia-based architectural firm of Toomey and Flynn who built the modern course at Shinnecock Hills toward the end of the same decade. The club joined the USGA on Jan. 13, 1922, several months before the courses opened for play that summer. The West Course has hosted many memorable golf events over its history. Beginning with the 1923 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the course went on to host 44 PGA Tour events. The Thunderbird Classic came to Westchester in 1963, with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus winning two of the first three years. -
