List of Titles:

September 27th-Babette’s Feast, Denmark, 1987

In 19th century Denmark, two adult sisters live in an isolated village with their father, who is the honored pastor of a small Protestant church that is almost a sect unto it- self. Although they each are presented with a real opportunity to leave the village, the sisters choose to stay with their father, to serve to him and their church. After some years, a French woman refugee, Babette, arrives at their door, begs them to take her in, and commits herself to work for them as maid/housekeeper/cook. Sometime after their father dies, the sisters decide to hold a dinner to commemorate the 100th anni- versary of his birth. Babette experiences unexpected good fortune and implores the sis- ters to allow her to take charge of the preparation of the meal. Although they are se- cretly concerned about what Babette, a Catholic and a foreigner, might do, the sisters allow her to go ahead. Babette then prepares the feast of a lifetime for the members of the tiny church and an important gentleman related to one of them.

October 4th-Tampopo, Japan, 1985 A truck driver stops at a small family-run noodle shop and decides to help its fledgling business. The story is intertwined with various vignettes about the relationship of love and food.

October 18th-Sideways, USA, 2004 Two men reaching middle age with not much to show but disappointment, embark on a week long road trip through California’s wine country, just as one is about to take a trip down the aisle.

October 25th-Eat Drink Man Woman, Taipei, 1994 A senior Chef lives with his 3 grown daughters; the middle one finds her future plans affected by unexpected events and the life changes of the other household members.

November 1st-Mildred Pierce, USA, 1945 Divorced single mom Mildred Pierce decides to open a restaurant business, which tears at the already-strained relationship with her ambitious elder daughter, Veda.

November 8th-Like Water for Chocolate, Mexico, 1992 Tita and Pedro want to get married but Tita has to take care of her ageing mother and is not allowed to marry. Pedro ends up marrying Tita’s sister, but lets Tita know he only married her sister to be closer to her. When Tita is forced to make the wedding cake, the guests at the wedding are overcome with sadness...Tita has discovered she can do strange things with her cooking.

November 22nd-I am Love, Italy, 2009 The tragic love story set at the turn of the millennium in Milan. The film follows the fall of the haute bourgeoisie due to the forces of passion and unconditional love.

November 29th-My Dinner with André, USA, 1981 Wallace Shawn and André Gregory, apparently playing themselves, share their lives over the course of an evening meal at a restaurant. Gregory, a theatre director from New York, is the more talkative of the pair. He relates to Shawn his tales of dropping out, travelling around the world, and experiencing the variety of ways people live, such as a monk who could balance his entire weight on his fingertips. Shawn listens avidly, but questions the value of Gregory’s seeming abandonment of the pragmatic aspects of life.
