Milestones of American horror films, the Universal series in the 1950s, include THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925), FRANKENSTEIN (1951), his BRIDE (l$55), his SON (1929), and THE MUMMY (1953). The resurgence of the horror film in the 1940s, as seen in a series produced by Val Lewton at RR0, is represented by THE CAT PEOPLE (19^), THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE (19^4), I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (19*£), and THE BODY SNAT0HER (19^5). Richard Griffith, Director of the Film Library, and Mr. Mayer, in their book, The Movies, state that "In true horror films, the archcriminal becomes the archfiend the first and greatest of whom was undoubtedly Lon Chaney. ...The year Lon Chaney died [1951], his director, Tod Browning,filmed DRACULA and therewith launched the full vogue of horror films. What made DRACULA a turning-point was that it did not attempt to explain away its tale of vampirism and supernatural horrors. -

The term represents ideas and themes transported over two hundred years from the novel Frankenstein (Shelley, 1818) to contemporary critical discourse about biotechnology. Most studies of Frankenstein’s endurance have focused on the novel’s intrinsic literary form, that is, its reception history, adaptations, interpretations, its publication, or its canonical status as a classic. However, this thesis is a history of ideas that offers a unique examination of Frankenstein’s endurance in mythical form as the Frankenstein myth. -

J A N U A R Y 2 0 2 0 The air of American life was thick with animosity, and like soot from a forest fire, it spread far beyond the burn. Both sides of the political spectrum were consumed, in Kolbowski’s words, with S H A R E such ‘sheer hatred’ that political disagreement became grounds to start a brawl or end a relationship. Grandmothers famously unfriended their grandchildren and in-laws refused to visit. Opting out of family holiday gatherings became not only common, but almost obligatory, if one’s family included resolute Trumpers. In November 2018, the liberal Democrat N E W Y O R K T I M E S columnist Maureen Dowd wrote an op-ed anticipating an upcoming vacation with her brother, who was not only a Trump supporter, but a friend and defender of Brett Kavanaugh, the Republican Supreme Court justice accused of sexual assault. Dowd used the article to reflect on how (and whether) a relationship can persist across a sea of political difference. -

Screams on Screens: Paradigms of Horror Barry Keith Grant Brock University [email protected] Abstract This paper offers a broad historical overview of the ideology and cultural roots of horror films. The genre of horror has been an important part of film history from the beginning and has never fallen from public popularity. It has also been a staple category of multiple national cinemas, and benefits from a most extensive network of extra-cinematic institutions. Horror movies aim to rudely move us out of our complacency in the quotidian world, by way of negative emotions such as horror, fear, suspense, terror, and disgust. To do so, horror addresses fears that are both universally taboo and that also respond to historically and culturally specific anxieties. The ideology of horror has shifted historically according to contemporaneous cultural anxieties, including the fear of repressed animal desires, sexual difference, nuclear warfare and mass annihilation, lurking madness and violence hiding underneath the quotidian, and bodily decay. But whatever the particular fears exploited by particular horror films, they provide viewers with vicarious but controlled thrills, and thus offer a release, a catharsis, of our collective and individual fears. Introduction Insofar as both film and videogames are visual forms that unfold in time, there is no question that the latter take their primary inspiration from the former. In what follows, I will focus on horror films rather than games, with the aim of introducing video game scholars and gamers to the rich history of the genre in the cinema. I will touch on several issues central to horror and, I hope, will suggest some connections to videogames as well as hints for further reflection on some of their points of convergence. -
